JB Hi-Fi Experience with Refunding Cyberpunk 2077

Went in today to get my PS4 copy refunded thinking It'd be quick and easy after reading the offical response from CDPR and this

The staff refused and said some of the stupidest shit i've heard all week. After a pointless back and forth basically being told the store policy that they dont refund opened games and my respone that the game is faulty (because its constant crashing on consoles) which they do allows refunds for, She eventually said that the crashing is "PART OF THE GAME".

After wasting like 10mins of my time the staff went and got someone in games department and they refunded instantly no more question asked.

Other bullshit she said
-She also has a PS4 copy and has NEVER had any crashes which is irrelevant for me getting problems and wanting a refund and the fact shes most likely lying since the issue is widespread and pretty much confirm by the company who made the game.
-Kept saying I used the DLC codes when the game doesn't come with any codes.

TLDR
If you go in to get a refund make sure you talk to/ask for someone in games department.

She's not wrong, crashing is a very big part of the game. I would get a refund out of principal, Projekt Red lied to us all for years. The game can never be "fixed" to match exactly what they had promised it would be, it's too far gone. It'll be a quarter of the price by the time it's ever fixed anyway. But I think projekt red is finished, expect them to be acquired by a more experienced publisher before their reputation and value floors out.

    • I'd normally agree with you, however Hello Games fixed their lies and mistakes with No Man's Sky. It's now pretty much what they promised, and they are/were a tiny developer compared to CDPR. I'd like to have faith the CDPR will eventually deliver, and it will be then when I make a purchase.

(But you are probably right, I'm just trying to be optimistic)

    • But I think projekt red is finished, expect them to be acquired by a more experienced publisher before their reputation and value floors out.

What? CD Projekt is one of the largest video game companies in the world. They're the largest in Europe and are bigger than Ubisoft.

      • And until last week, they had the untarnished reputation of companies like Rockstar. Now they are on Ubisoft's level and we're finding out they are using bird tokens or some nonsense to direct development and they really have no idea what they are doing anymore. They were massively overvalued and probably all of their games are very overbudget at this point for what they are going to be.

      • Bigger than Ubisoft? Based on what?

By September 2017, it was the largest publicly traded video game company in Poland, worth about US$2.3 billion,[7] and by May 2020, had reached a valuation of US$8.1 billion, making it the largest video game industry company in Europe ahead of Ubisoft.[8] CD Projekt joined WIG20, an index of the 20 largest companies on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, in March 2018.[9]

Yep took xbox version back today after seeing the media. I thought it was just me and regretted the purchase. I turned it on three times and had issues everytime. Took a while for the store to sort out but JB gave a full refund after calling head office.

    • I played it blind from midnight, didn't read anything online at all. The next day I tried to play some more and there just was no will to do it. I wouldn't normally play B Grade games like this, it reminded me of the Xbox 360 reboot of Perfect Dark. Yeah the graphics were pretty slick, but the game was completely soulless, as if it were made by someone who had never really played a videogame before and wouldnt' notice all the gaping holes in quality.

Thinking abotu this some more, Projekt Red's reputation is heading right towards Peter Molyneux territory in terms of quality. Making good games is hard and it takes more than good ideas and money.

Apparently Witcher 3 was pretty buggy when if FIRST came out as well. I wouldn't know as I waited a couple of years before buying it and didn't have a single issue with it. Not sure it's ever been any different and it's not just Projekt Red. Anyone remember how buggy EVERY Battlefield game was when it first came out?

    • +2

For me its more about the crashing which is widespread issue and pretty much confirmed by CDPR themselves. Checked my PS error report log I had at least 30 crashes before i called it quits.

      • Yeah that's pretty sucky. My son has been playing it on the PC and he's noticed a few bugs but no crashes.

  • I'm on PC and keep getting issues with sound that come back no matter what I do. It's like a leaky ship, the water keeps finding it's way back in. I'm considering refunding just out of principal but I did buy it through the GOG Russian store.

  • Got the GOG version from EB and I am crashing every day, multiple times on PC only in Cyberpunk. It's starting to get annoying…

    • I think the crashing for PC people is cause of GOG. My mates with the Steam version rarely crashes or none at all.

      • +2

I have the GOG version and have had zero issues so far with about 15 hours game time. Running High at 1440p. Seems weird to me that so many people are having issues.

        • +1

Lucky you, there goes that theory. I'm considering to refund mine or just hold onto it until it's fixed.

it was a big reach for them. You can tell a lot went into character designs + art but they ran out of time to code everything. You can still see the takeaway vendors but they just talk to you. I question whether they should have hired keanu and put the money into coding…

    • +1

Yep they ran out of time and they knew the game was in a bad state.

      from conference call

D: Can you explain why gameplay from console was hidden from people?

CDPR: We were updating this version until the very last minute and hoped we will make it in time. Becuase it was work in progress so we didn't release it until like 1 day before launch but it was late and it's entierly on CDPR.

    • I question whether they should have hired keanu and put the money into coding

No you're looking at it wrong, it's because they ran out of time to code that they hired Keanu. Keanu was a honeypot, it's classic EA/Activision style marketing.

    • -1

I don't think Keanu was expensive. He doesn't come off as a greedy person, he lives a modest life and in one of the matrix movies he forgoed much of his pay so that the cgi guys could get paid more. I think he's just happy to be able to appear in big stuff as a few years ago he was heading into obscurity until John Wick happened by accident.

If Keanu cost 2 mil and his presence bumps sales over that that's money well spent imo and a better way to spend money than on advertisements that would surely have cost more than Keanu. In a hollywood movie its not uncommon for the marketing to be as much as the entire production budget because stupid ads sell unfortunately.

      • His work is good and he is a good person, not arguing that. I'd play through again just for his scenes as his way of delivering lines is interesting. It's more that cdpr planned something bigger than they could deliver.

Broader question for those playing Cyberpunk on base PS4/Xbox One - did you actually think it would run well?

The only reason I ask is that from the moment I saw the gameplay footage, and when I saw the benchmarks of the 3080 struggling to run it at 1440p Ultra, I knew that there was almost zero chance the 7 year old consoles would be able to play it at any reasonable quality/resolution/frame rate.

As a PC gamer, I always think about whether my system can run a game before buying it, are console gamers not like this? Do you just pick up anything released on your console assuming that you would get a good experience?

(Not trying to defend CDPR from releasing a buggy/unfinished/unoptimized game, but rather, just curious about why someone on a base PS4 will buy this game thinking it will run well).

    • +1

I hear where you're coming from and I think that's a reasonable expectation.

However, there have been other games ported to console over the years that were graphically intense for their time as well, and they managed to make it without issue.

Also, the CEO (allegedly can't find a source) said earlier in the year that it runs fine on PS4 and XBO, and, they claimed to delayed the game to polish it and make it run better on older consoles.

So, I can kinda see why people are a bit mad, if you just have either of these base consoles, really wanted to play it, you're kind of out of luck.

      • +1

I agree, again, without trying to defend CDPR, I think they released this game at probably the worst possible time. Ideally, it should have been a launch title for the PS5 and Xbox Series X where it would have really shone and it would probably have been a hit. Ultimately, I just don't think it was possible to develop a game which would be optimised for modern hardware (i.e. PC and next-gen consoles), and a 7 year old platform at the same time. It's about as ridiculous as expecting Cyberpunk to play well on a 7870 (or something similar), which is probably more powerful than the PS4.

Having played a chunk of it on PC, I can definitely say that it's a beautiful game. Definitely overhyped, but if we take away all the BS hype, it's got a fun story, the graphics are beautiful, the worlds are fun to explore and there's a lot to do aside from the main story.

        • +1

Yeah it's a shame isn't it, poor timing with the new consoles launching, they could have just done next gen and PC, but that's a lot of money left on the table at this point in time I guess.

    • +1

I agree with you. Base consoles were never going to run this well. CDPR should have not spent the time trying to make it work for these but obviously greedy corpo Devs needed the money and released a work in progress to make $$$ off everyone. People need to stop preordering IMO as it supports this trend of developers releasing half-baked products.

      • +1

People need to stop preordering IMO as it supports this trend of developers releasing half-baked products.

It's beyond me why people would pre-order a game. Pre-ordering a console or hardware where there may be supply shortages makes sense, but it's not like your favourite game is going to be out of stock on Steam…

    • Console gamers probably didn't have a choice.
Not everyone has a gaming PC.
Obviously this game is best with a mouse at high fps and as many graphical options enabled as possible.
But some people literally only just have a PS4.

I think this is a good PSA and hopefully teaches everyone that if you're refunding a game from a non-gaming store, ask to speak to someone in games, save yourself some time.

Still reflects poorly on the rest of the JB staff, so shame on them, but may as well keep in mind, especially if EB don't survive very long, I imagine JB will be a go to for game purchasing in the future.

    • no help needed i'm just venting about the idiot I had to deal with.

  • +3

Yep, somehow I always had the impression JB would be good with Consumer Law issues, until I tried to get Joy-Cons with controller drift replaced or repaired.

The guy acknowledged that they'd seen a lot of controllers with this issue, and verified my controller was exhibiting the typical symptoms. But he said it was just out of Nintendo's manufacturer's warranty period so I'd have to pay for it to be repaired.

I said that it should be entitled to free repair or replacement under ACL as it's a fault with the product. He gave me a flyer on JB's ACL policy and made a call. He was told I had two options:

    • Pay to have it repaired even though I shouldn't have to, or
    • Have the issue escalated with the manager if I'm not happy with the decision

I thought "Eff that, I shouldn't have to fight an effing manager to get what I'm entitled to" and sorted it out directly with Nintendo.

TLDR: JB Hi-Fi are terrible at honoring their Consumer Law obligations. Buyer beware.

  • CDPR didn't make any deal with distributors about refunds. That said, ask for a refund as it has issues.

CDPR isn't having a good day. Devotion debacle too. Long live ultra rich CCP!

  • ACCC already got Steam for not allowing refunds in Australia. JB better be careful of they are next.

  • my copy is from GOG. downloaded 59gb. crashed on startup "Cyberpunk has flatlined."
downloaded another update 45gb and it runs fine now.

    ouch.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/18/sony-pulls-cyberpunk-2077-fr…

Sony has removed Cyberpunk 2077 from its PlayStation Store and says it will give players full refunds for digital copies of the game.
Shares of Cyberpunk's Polish developer, CD Projekt, tumbled as much as 20% Friday on the news.

  • Ouch. Hopefully this is a lesson for all publishers not to release half finished games.

  • Got a refund at JB HiFi 2 days ago. Walked in, said its glitchy (xbox one x) and they didn’t protest at all. Just processed the refund.
