Impulse Selling, Now What?

Recovered COVID tax, sold my Pajero sport for a lot higher than expected.
It was impulsive selling as I didn’t need to sell at the time, it was looking financially viable.
Now looking at buying another car (pref Nissan patrol). Cars are expensive now so should I wait a few months till COVID tax finishes or just buy?
I would like opinions and not fights haha

…so should I wait a few months till COVID tax finishes or just buy?

If you can wait for the market to "normalise", then wait.
If you can't wait, then no point asking us if you should wait.

    • I can wait, I can definitely wait

  • sold my Pajero sport for a lot higher than expected

You got lucky. The two owners I know who have these absolutely hate them.

    • I loved it, 65000ks of city, country and towing. Serviced properly and had absolutely no problem.
Had hand brake error(franchisee was an ***) but got it fixed under warranty. Would definitely buy 1 again

They complain more about the handling than anything.

        • It’s a quite tall, narrow heavy vehicle. What did they expect?

    Do you need it?

Are you buying new? Or second hand almost new etc.

If you are looking for second hand or almost new then wait. New car prices you can negotiate maybe they have it in stock or can you wait for delivery.

    • Thinking of new

      • New cars you can still get decent deals. Only high demand models with shortages you might have a problem. Go and poke around and check stock levels.

Covid tax might be around for a while. Could be 12 months or more for the market to ‘normalise’. How long can you wait?

Just buy when you are ready. A Patrol is hardly a high volume seller so possible they may look to discount to sell stock - assuming there is some.

" should I wait a few months till COVID tax finishes"

In a few months we'll be smack in the middle of scamdemic round 2. Buy the car when you need it.

So it didn't cross your mind that because you had been selling at a great price, you'll also be buying off others who will also be selling at a great price?

Your choices are wait for the prices to drop or just suck it up and buy now.

    • It did come to my mind. Been looking at the prices since a month and a half now. I know what my choices are
My question was in your opinion buy now or wait? Provided I can be without a car for a few months.

      • My question was in your opinion buy now or wait? Provided I can be without a car for a few months.

I would wait, demand will drop off soon enough as everyone how didn't have a car etc purchased, which seems to be what caused the jump in prices.

People who took PT now wanting to drive!

  • There was a rumour floating around the last few days that the new 300 series Cruiser will be powered by a large capacity 4 cylinder diesel engine. Not sure if it's true or not, but I suspect that once the 200 series ends production next year, the demand for the Y62 Patrol will increase. I've heard there's a bit of a wait on the Y62s at the moment, so perhaps now's the time to jump if that's what you're going to upgrade to.

What else have you got your eye on? Your post hits close to home too - I've got a Pajero Sport which I'm very happy with, but I had debated selling it now while prices are up, and upgrading to a Y62 in the next 12 months. Ended up buying a house instead so I should probably scratch that plan…

    • Nope, 300 won't have a 4 cylinder

      • That's a relief

    • Not much, want land cruiser or patrol sized suv. 1 is expensive and the other 1 is short listed

      • Yeah I don't really see prices going in your favour on either of those any time in the next year.

  • Talk in 4WD magazines is the 300 could have a V6.
