Ubiquity UDM Has a Lot of Interference on 2.4 with Google Devices

Just looking for clues before really starting to dig.

I have a UDM that was plugged into kitchen working fine. Finished painting the house, so moved it to it's rightful spot, the next room. Everything seemed fine, except the chromecast with google tv next to it could not authenticate a connection to the wifi. The 2.4 and 5Ghz have the same blended SSID. Finally got that to work after mucking around but then I noticed the next day my smart porch light on a routine to go off at 10pm was still on. After investigation in the google home app, I saw no smart lights were really working with commands and some would show on then off in a cyclic manner no actually doing anything on the physical light.

Delved in to the controllor of the unifi and there is heaps of interference on the 2.4Ghz channel.
I have:
2 nest minis
1 Home hub
4 smart downlights
2 smart porchlights
2 smart cameras
1 smart kettle
3 CC Google TVs
1 smart lamp

Any ideas?

Should be able to diagnose if it is a 2.4ghz interference issue and see what channels you should switch to with Wifi Analyzer app or wifiman. There's a whole bunch of Wifi survey apps out there

A lot of similar advice in the UBQT forums on reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/hnujq2/wifi_inter…

  • Turn off guest mode on your Chromecast is a suggestion

    • Interesting. Do you think this still applies to new cc with gtv?

  • Make sure IGMPv3 is enabled.

    • What's that do in a nutshell?

      • Better multicast traffic management. So if you're using Air Play or Casting, the experience is much smoother, faster and more stable.

If I were you I'd make a separate network for legacy devices and keep all new devices on 5Ghz with Fast Roaming enabled.

        • I can't find the setting. Is it on controller or router software?

          • @dmbminaret: Are you using the new settings page? If so you'll need to switch to the old settings and go to Wi-FI Settings.

            • @No Username: I'm on the android app remote to controller.

              • @dmbminaret: Let me check if you can do it from the app. I just always use the Website.

              • @dmbminaret: No dice. You'll need to do it from a browser.

                • @No Username: Ok cheers for the info. If I put all the 2.4 devices on a separate network, then I'll lose functionality of the smart devices from 5Ghz devices. Only voice control then I expect.

                  • @dmbminaret: Just make sure they're on the same subnet and VLAN. Or you could just create a new Wi-Fi network instead, which would probably be easier.

  • Is it interference or just low signal strength?

    • Just has big line of orange on the 2.4 band after very small green bit. Sorry, I'm pretty new to the ubiquity scene, seemed a cleaner option than pfsense for home.

  • I had similar troubles with the new Chromecast with Google TV and my 5GHz WiFi. I tried many changes to the wifi setup with no success at all. Eventually I found a post from another user saying to try Channel 40 and this instantly fixed the problem. There are other posts that say to change the channel width, but for me it was the channel.

    • This is actually what I did. I changed the 5Ghz to 40 and 2.4Ghz to 11 and also plugged in a AC-LR as an extender because I haven't cabled it yet. That's when I noticed what was going on. I changed the extender back to auto and tried different bands to the dream machine but still had a lot of interference even after I removed the extender altogether so I don't think that is the problem.

The google tvs were working fine and still are besides one having a hiccup, I think it's all the other devices on 2.4. I have much playing to do over Christmas.
