I Wanted to Believe in The ShopBack Hype, Until They Declined My First Large Transaction

Update: Shopback have resolved this issue and my cashback is in my account. Thank you to the team for a speedy resolution.

I have seen Shopback and Cashrewards plastered all over this site, so much so, I finally decided to sign up. Shopback had decent cashback at Sunglass Hut and so, I took the plunge and purchased a pair of sunglasses for my wife for Christmas at a grand total of $790. The promised cashback bought down the price nicely after some quick maths, but little did I know that it would not be honoured.

While the click showed up in my "Click Activity" tab, the transaction was declined even though the receipt clearly had the same date as the click date and they both matched. Allegedly Sunglass Hut didn't honour the transaction, but the cookie-cutter response I got was something along the lines of they would be attempting to pursue Sunglass Hut and it could take another 30 to 45 days for a resolution.

I am quite disappointed, but a simple Google search has yielded many others experiencing the same thing. Smaller transactions seem to be no problem, some of my smaller ones have been approved, but my first big transaction through Shopback was declined, this seems to be a regular occurrence based on other peoples detailed accounts of using Shopback.

Terrible.

Contact sunglass hut and ask if they gave cashback to shopback. If they did, report shopback for defrauding you, simples. Cashback services seem to rely on user apathy.

    • They were Chanel sunglasses. No gold or anything.

  • Hi Vheissu, are you able to PM me so that we can take another look into it for you?

    • Hi, I sent you a message. Did you receive it? If you can sort this out, it would be appreciated.

  • Similar experience with a recent transaction with Apple on a new iPhone, Vheissu. Another purchase made on the same browser at a similar time was approved.
Also received the cookie-cutter reply after providing receipts etc. Never seem to have an issue with small transactions, which does make you wonder…

Could be that current gen iPhones are excluded from cash back currently.

multiple deals on here where shopback or cashrewards has been the headline I've had to manually submit cashbacks. No guarantees ofn it going through. Seems hella dodgy in 2020 that this isn't 99% recorded automatically.

  • My cashback from Cash Rewards and Shopback has decreased about 80-90% in the last 12 months. My claims are either not recognised after the purchase or declined because of some exclusion. I don't have the time to always manually enter in claims unless it's +$1.

Cash rewards is my preferred. I started with shopback and took ages to get $10 to even withdraw. Cash rewards handled a 10% cashback from dell easily giving me $180 after the time and I've only had to chase up one from quicksilver which they got the cashback sorted within the week.

I find whatever I get on amazon is never approved but can't be bothered to follow up on whether should be valid.

Used shopback when it was still up for hey you. When my book purchases from amazon got denied, I switched to cashrewards.

I don't like the whole concept of not being able to determine with any certainty at the time of purchase if you're going to be paid or not. So you give up a ton of privacy and help these companies earn a commission and you possibly get a bit fat zero.

  • I have only used one of these ????back places and that was for 3 separate purchases from the one place. They all tracked but took a direct approach to get the $'s paid months after they were due.
Not worth the hassle for me, I just ignore anything that mentions them. It is pot luck if they work.

    1. Treat the cash backs as a bonus, the cherry on top. Don't buy because of the cash backs, just in case it fails.

    2. If you're new to this, practice with a couple of smaller purchases. You might have a VPN on, or use coupon codes that don't qualify, etc.

    3. You might consider handing in your OZB badge with such a purchase.

Bought 1k grog and tracked fine but I am super careful with cb providers.

Only use phone app. Always start with empty cart. Don’t Flick between apps, and only use codes which are appproved.

Some phone apps don't work with cb ie. The Iconic

Fair - though i meant the ShopBack app as a web portal eg for First Choice.

I have ad blockers and VPN on pc so am worried that will stuff with cb tracking,

  • I've just stuck with Cashrewards because it's worked for me 95%+. Savings of $1,200 to date so I can't complain.

    • I switched to only Cashrewards after terrible experiences with Shopback.

  • I’m sorry I can’t get past the price of those sunnies. It must be a typo????

    • Nope, some people really do pay that much for a piece of plastic with a 'ɔc' logo.

I've just got out of hospital after a heart attack after seeing it myself.

  • I have had so many bad experiences. I have heard screen recording helps.

  • Can anyone tell me what the cashback for OnSport is on ShopBack? I see there is 7% discount but no exclusions on what cashback can be claimed against.

Reason I ask is I am now 0/2 from purchases using SB with the following outcome:

"Thank you for submitting a missing cashback claim.

We have appealed this missing cashback claim with the merchant and found that the merchant has deemed ShopBack ineligible to earn commissions on this transaction which results in us being unable to pass the cashback along to you.

ShopBack awards cashback on your transactions on the basis that the merchant attributes your order to ShopBack and pays us a commission, they are the deciding party on a sale being attributed to ShopBack."

Both purchases have been over $200, and followed all steps outlined - No popup blocker, vpn, etc
