this game is still really good. But the Xen level seems as long as the rest of the game combined, and absolutely outstayed its welcome.

yeah, ruined the game for me…..just kept on going and going and going

i thought.. "this has to be the boss now", at least 7 times in Xen.

The game went from a solid 9 to a 7 after Xen.

      • I felt the same way with the flood in Halo 2

I think it dragged out too, but I found the Gonarch and Nihilanth encounters to be worth the slog. Outstanding music also.

Overall it was a great remake, although I think they should have kept the original inhuman HECU marine voices. Go, recon!

      • The hecu marine voice is my real complaint here. The xen part doesn't faze me too much

      • i thought they could have used more voice actors. Especially if they got Valve's blessing.

You could recognize the same voices being used by NPCs over and over even though it's on a different character model. Young woman, old woman, same voice.

        • I seem to remember it having more voices at some point early on, but that was quite a while ago so I could be wrong.

Incredible remake. The xen levels are definitely a new experience, and probably drag on a little longer than they need to, but the design and music is so impressive it’s easy to forgive some bloat at the end.

Lived every second of the original including the expansions.

Detailed maps and out of bounds areas.
    Immersive storyline.
Music was ok but sound effects supurb.

    • What I found outdated in BM is that when areas transition, you get a pause of about 5 seconds, and again when you cross back over. Even with an nvme SSD, these are long loads. This was innovative back in 98. Before HL, there were separate disjointed levels with a loading screen in the typical FPS. HL1 created a connected world with brief load screens connecting stages.

Nowadays games load the next area seamlessly, before you cross the boundry line between areas (if there even is one). The style of area transition used in the HL engine, which extends to HL2 and Black Mesa is dated. Modern games do it with no pausing to load at all. And this got annoying, and was a reminder of the engine's age.

      • Soul reaver had this down packed with loading map transitions and no pausing of game play. This was all achieved on PS1

Onve I've finished playing HL1 (Lambda1VR) in VR I'll get through this :)

    • Wow, I had not heard of this project. This may require the purchase of a Quest…

Can confirm it does warrant the purchase, amazing experiences. Completed HL1 in VR with Lambda1vr, and HLAlyx on Quest via PC/Virtual Desktop. Totally worth it.

  • Thanks. I'll finally get that reference in the Portal song.

Best single player game i have played in years. Zen remake was a masterpiece. It dragged on a tiny bit around the the factory climb but thats about it…
