  • Dang that’s a tidy price

Why is a lens with such a short focal range so expensive? What's the "speciality"?

    • +7

The constant f/2.8 throughout the range

    • Why is a lens with such a short focal range so expensive?

Lol, you've clearly not seen the big tele primes.

    • +2

This is a budget f2.8 lens lol. Not that there is anything wrong with that (I own one) but look at the Sony/Canon equivalents before you call this one 'so expensive'.

      • +2

I gotta say this is pretty decent lens. The only neg is not wide enough lol

        • +1

Ther is a wide angle Tamron 2.8 for the E mount as well though. They've been smart about the range they've chosen for maximum size savings and reasonable image quality.

          • @euk: I have been thinking to get that FE 20 f1.8 instead.

  • Good lens, but please aware it doesn't have image stabilisation.

    • The Sigma/Sony 24-70 2.8 do not have IS either for what it is worth.

      • Damn didn't know that pricey Sony equivalent doesn't have it also.

    • +1

Most Sony bodies have IBIS so you'll be alright.

  • Took this on a proper event on the weekend and have amazing shots. Taken this around international travel prior covid and is usually my all-in-one lens and I've no regrets.

    I def recommend :)

    • Do you have full frame or crop sensor camera?

      I don't see this lens being an all-in-one for a crop sensor…

      • Sorry should have mentioned - FF Sony A73

        • Ok thanks a lot for clarifying.

Tamron just released a 17-70mm f2.8 for crop sensors. That one would be good for crop sensors once it comes in stock.

  • Wouldn’t the 28-200 be the better option?

    • +3

You are buying this lens for the constant 2.8 aperture.

    • Different beasts….both are awesome lenses but for different purposes
