What Type of Lawn Do I Have? Photos Attached

Hi, I am maintaining a lawn for the first time and trying to sow some seed to fix up damaged area in the lawn. I'm trying to figure out what kind of lawn I have in my home… but to my eyes, the photos shown on google seems quite similar… my best guess is buffalo…

If any of you guys know what lawn I have, I would be really appreciated. I've attached the photos below.

If the geo location helps the guess, I'm in Queensland.

Edit
As advised i pulled out some samples to take to local gardening store. It now it seems its not bufallo. Confusing for newbie. I've attached sample of the photo below.

Edit
The local gardening store told me its a buffalo judging from the runner. Which I have absolutely no idea. Got the recommended fertiliser. I will see how I go.

edit
Just went to another store … three of them gathered together and told me its Kikuyu..
.. I might just have to hire a gardener for few times to find out what it is…

I see part of your lawn growing rubber mat and toes? With the toes, you need a different kinda “seed”…

The other green stuff looks buffalo.

  • Looks like buffalo to me.

  • Looks like buffalo, no seeding possible sadly.

    Green Grass

  • Buffalo.

Just give it plenty of water and it will recover.

Given the runner towards the bottom of the 5Eh4QA1 pic I'd suggest it appears to be Kikuyu. Blades all look a little narrow for most of the buffalo genera I've seen.

Yes, blade looks narrow for buffalo. It looks a lot like my lawn and mine is Wintergreen.

      • Another variety that puzzles me was 'Queensland Blue Couch'. Google search shows 'Winter green' is couch variety as well… so that might be it too… they all look mostly same to me lol

Cut out a small square of the lawn - down to the thatch, and take it to your local nursery and ask them. That should give you a reasonable conclusive answer. Most decent lawns - of which yours looks to be one - can't be seeded.

Best off finding out what the grass type is, measure out how much you need to replace, go buy a couple of rolls of turf of the grass you need, then cut out the dead stuff and replace it with appropriate sized pieces from your turf roll/s.

Would be worth dropping some fresh turf underlay before you put down you new grass to ensure you have some good nutrients to help it take root. Then keep the water up to it every other day should be a good outcome and not cost you a fortune.

          • @M8y: Thanks for the tip. I am feeling that there are a lot more maintenance required with a house than I thought. Things just keep popping up. :O

  • Thanks for the input guys. I will try to find some fertilisers and water them to see if that helps. :D

    • check out lawn tips on youtube - he has got a lot of good content on lawn maintenances techniques and recommends products available in Australia (he is based in orange)

  • It's couch, I have a lawn of the same stuff myself.

The runners and blades give it away, its too narrow for kikuyu and buffalo. If you let it go to seed you can tell whether its common couch or Queensland Blue Couch as the seed heads are slightly different.

It does tend to thatch if you let it grow too wild so at the start of spring its often good to mow the hell of it right down and then feed it back up and keep it mowed at a nice height. Once you get it nice though it's a beautiful grass, its pretty drought tolerant and very soft so its an ideal yard if you like to walk around barefoot.

What Type of Lawn Do I Have?

    Patchy

  • Couch

  • Looks like Kik to me but hard to tell by the photos.
Does it have a lot of runners off the edges?

Judging by the photos though (and if it is kik or even couch), it probably won't need an overseed unless you've got big dead patches or areas dug up by dogs etc. If you are going to overseed, be careful if buying from Hammerbarn as a lot of their "Kikuyu" seed is a blend containing mostly rye grass.
Core aerate, good quality granular fertilizer like 2Spec Accelerate or Elevate. Maybe a top dress with washed sand or sandy loam if it's uneven and fortnightly application of a good soil wetter (Hydrolink Advance) and seaweed/kelp/humic product like Kelpro. Good waterings twice a week and it will bounce back quickly.

    • Thanks for the tip. I bought seasol spray on fertiliser to try on the lawns. Also, I have feed and weed bought from bunnings while ago. Bunnings told me that this will damage buffalo (the instruction also says not to use them on buffalo). So I am going test the feed and weed on the corner to see if it kills my lawn to rule out buffalo. As advised by you and bunnings, I will not attempt to overseed, I will try fertilise and water them to see if they improve.

      • It will work to some extent but you can get much better products than what you'll find at Bunnings.
If you want great grass, look after the soil and it will grow

  • I would say it’s a Kikuyu.

  • It's definitely not buffalo cos thats what i got, and that aint it.
