Can This Be Buffed or Polished out? Need Help Please

I don't know who else to ask but I really need help.

This is the front bumper on my car, I'm not sure exactly what happened I just got the car I didn't realise it before.

Anyway I need professional opinion; any panel beaters here or painters or detailers?

With the images below, is there any product or procedures I can use from like Repco to remove or reduce these marks?

Like polish or some kind of product or do I need a professional to do it?

I really didn't want to have to fully respray the bumper if I can help it….

Please honest and professional feedback.

It looks like pretty light scratching of the clear coat.

Wet it with some water. If you can't see it when it's wet, then yep, you can take it out with a mild compound (such as Meguiars Ultimate Compound) with a microfibre hand applicator, wipe it down with some alcohol, then seal it with whatever sealant you use on your paintwork after you've washed your car.

    Looks pretty mild.

    • Will go to the shop tomorrow… well later today thanks for your feedback

    • Should I use a wax or a polish now?

If the marking has gone and the polish you used wasn't so abrasive that it left it's own marks, use a wax or sealant.

        • Yea it's pretty much all gone just wasn't sure if I need to use anything else after the ultimate compound stuff?

  • +1

Yes when you wipe it, it does fade away but always comes back dry..

    I've no idea about sealant?

I'm sorry I'm new to this..

Could you point me to the exact products or process plz

    • Call a car detailer they could remove this with a polisher. Would take less than an hour to get maybe 90% back to normal. Send them a photo they'll be able to provide you an estimate.

Go to a decal shop and just get some cool flames or tribal tattoo designs cut to about that size.

This is a joke, my friend. The tone of OzBargain is generally pretty happy with the odd joke. Go with the flow, man.

    • Manga comic decoupage
      .

  • Looks to me like it is either paint transfer from whatever you hit or mild scuffing to your paint. Both of which should polish away.

Even if it doesn’t polish out, it’ll look better after you attempt it. From previous comments you can’t afford to have it sprayed again anyway, so give it a try.

  • Yes, should polish out easily. It might even be more paint transfer than scratching. Be careful polishing around the edges, it's easy to apply more pressure to those areas and remove more than you intend.

    • Be careful polishing around the edges

I don't think op will be using a rotary

      • Same applies to hand, it's easy to end up applying pressure through just one finger on an edge rather than across a backing plate. Yes it'll probably take longer but you can still burn through the edge by hand if you're not paying attention. Modern paint is extremely thin and I doubt they have an ultrasonic thickness gauge. Doesn't take much to go through the clear coat if you're not paying attention and go too aggressive.

  • Maybe yes…maybe no. Either take your vehicle in person to a real person and have it repaired by which ever method is best…at a price.
OR, ask said same professional in person their opinion and then do it yourself.
I am in the motor trade, and all I can safely say…is a guaranteed ..maybe.
But, give it a go…you maybe will make it better….or maybe worse.
At least you will learn some handy paint repair hints for the future.

  • Try polish and see what happens.

  • From the pictures, I'd say it will come out pretty easily but hard to say what to use without personally seeing it. You may need a variety of compounds as you want to start from the least aggressive method and work your way up.

I'd try something really gentle like Bowden's Paint Cleanse Restore, that size area, just apply with a cheap microfibre cloth/applicator and buff off with a clean microfibre….All up, about $30, or get the complete Bowden's kit for $42 which will be better quality applicator and cloth.
If that doesn't work, move to a more aggressive cut like Meguiar's Ultimate or Classic Polish….if that doesn't work, Meguiar's Scratch X.

I'd use different products personally but these are easily available at Repco, SCA etc.

    • @whitelie thank you so much the Meguiar's stuff is definitely working

Hello I am digging up an old post here. Can i ask which is more aggressive. meguiar Ultimate compound or Scratch x (1.0) in this day and age?

      • Scratch X would be more aggressive

      • I have both and definitely the ultimate compound is more agressive.

      • Start with the least aggressive compound and work your way up.

What year is that Lancer? Paints on CJ Lancers can be pretty bad and the clearcoat can be really thin. I would be very careful cutting it down if I was you.

    • Yes CJ..I've used the Meguiar's ultimate I think it's helped but I may need a few applications, I think a few of the scratches are too deep but the scuffs are easy to fix… I'm using an applicator pad and using circular motions with a little force

  • Looks like light paint transfer or scratches. Can you catch your fingers in the paint

get a packet of aldi alcohol wipes it will remove it easy, scraped someone's car parking christmas eve had worse white paint on my guard wipes took it off great.

BTW the other guy is putting in a claim for a small scratch that you can hardly see, but that's why I'm full comprehensive insured so all is good apart from my excess of 800

    • Yeah not worth it when the excess is that much… The car is over 10 years old so it has the usual marks in the paint just the bumper was the most noticeable…

So just trying to tidy it up, I've bought the Meguiar's ultimate which was on special for boxing Day and I think it has helped, I'll probably do a few applications just to be sure I'll look for the wipes next thank you…

  • That’s a very superficial scratch and fortunately it’ll come out with some polishing.

I don’t see any paint transfer, it’s just scuffing.

    • Yes mostly gone now what do I need next wax or something to finish

      • +1

Not really. No point waxing just one small section if you aren’t going to wax the entire car.

But if you want piece of mind, then sure just wax it as well.

        • I've put the ultimate compound on the whole front bar and it cleaned it up very well looks nice now might do some other parts of the car there's little scratches here and there on the paint
