  • No screen vs the other deal but high va & W. What would be the better deal?

  • Few things to consider :

    1) No digital display
    2) Only 2 sockets
    3) Not in the recommended list of UPS by Synology(if that is relevant)

    • +3

What's more important than a display is USB (or other connection) for communication between the UPS and PC.
As for only two sockets, well, it is only 480W.

      • USB or comms is a must tbh.

They should stop pumping out this crap and start using LifePO4 batteries. These are not even AGM just a normal lead acid car battery. Cost might only be in the $20~$30's

If they used a AGM charger, at least you can connect a 2nd hand 100-200Ah telecom deep cycle. Facebook Marketplaces has heaps for ~$100

    • Also has USB on the front vs. rear. Rear should result in neater wiring. Could be the issue with Synology? Might not have built in support for this UPS? Needs to be able to detect power loss so it can run your shutdown script, also for stats on the UPS to make up for the lack of screen. Assuming such info would be displayed somewhere in the GUI if the UPS is supported.

    • Works fine with Synology diskstation. Had it running with mine for over a year and a half. Had at least half a dozen power outages, and it always works as it should with the Synology; shutting down when it needs to and restarting the DS when power comes back on

    • +1

It is in Synology compatibility list for my DS-918+ and mmany others:

Decent option for modem/router if you don't like your internet connection immediately dropping when you lose power.

    • +1

No RJ11/RJ45. I bought the previous deal as it offered surge protection for this.

      • I'd argue not really the job of a UPS. Anyone still left on copper landlines anyway? If the RJ11 is just coming from the back of your router, wouldn't expect any surges, unlike when the cable went out out into the street. RJ45 should also be fine, unless you are running outside PoE cameras or the like, in which case should have surge protectors as part of the installation.

Only us plebs on NBNs fttc/fttn "broadband".

          • @BargainKen: yeah but you are not copper all the way to the exchange like in the DSL days, so the risk of lightning strike is much, much lower.

            • @lunchbox99: I've been struck twice in 2 months, both times only the Netcomm NTD from NBN died. Both times had to wait a week for the tech to come replace the device.
At first we thought it was thru the mains but given nothing else in the house died, the optus tech deduced it might have come from the copper cable outside.
Sorry but in this case lightning (literally) struck twice and I've decided its a little more than likely to happen again.
We had storms again last night, this time NTD and rest of it is hooked up to the UPS and it sailed through fine.
If the UPS wont stop it, I dont think anything will.

    • How long would 850VA 480W UPS UPS run a typical modem/router which use maybe 10watts?

      • Likely to get 3-4hours.

        • Nice enough to last most blackouts usually

      • It's highly dependent on what you connect. In my case on the smaller 650VA with a fttc connection and Optus 4g modem is est 1hr of life. 3-4hrs seems ambitious at least with fttc on an 850VA.

FTTC connections have the added bonus of supplying power to the pit outside so there's that..

        • I have FTTN, the modem runs pretty cool, the wall brick seems efficient as well. I doubt it uses more than 10 watts. May last a while.

          • @Grok: Only way to know (without guessing) is to measure it.

No more stock (interesting I can't post something which just says "Sold out" or "Out of stock")

Pretty y sure i use this model on my cctv system. Does the job.

  • I have a few of these UPS' (freebie from Ingram) and they're good as a basic UPS. They managed to keep up my computer in a 30 minute planned outage.
