  • this good for beginners?

    • Mig welding is the easiest to learn according to Google. I'll only be doing small projects with it so its at the right price point for me and has all the startup stuff needed.

MIG is the easiest to learn, and also the easiest to do badly without realising.

This is probably a reasonable setup to start with to learn, but you ideally need to do a welding course if you've never done it before. That way someone can tell you what you're doing wrong.

Gasless setups can also be very difficult to get working right. My (admittedly nearly 30 year old) MIG works perfectly with Gas, but I have never been able to dial it in right for flux core. Gas isn't that expensive (a small bottle (E Size) is $99 + $200 deposit for the cylinder from Bunnings) and will give you far superior results.

You shouldn't use a fan to remove fumes/smoke with gas however, as the Gas is there to shield the weld. I would recommend wearing at least an N95 mask, or better still a respirator while welding. This is essential with Galvanized Steel as the zinc in the gal is quite toxic.

Just be aware, the gasless mig wire smokes like a bastard, so get a fan going so you can see what you are doing.

    • Thanks for the tip mate!

  • Probably ok for sheet metal and light gauge shs… no good for anything heavy.

    • Yeah about 30A / mm so maybe up to 4mm, I personally would go for a 200A unit just for the overhead and better duty cycle you likely get.

    • 120a will do about 1/8" (3ish mm) but the duty cycle on this at that level will be low.

  • This is an awesome kit and the best mig you will get for the price, rate it highly.
