Weighing up between Buying New & Used Car (Budget $18000)

Just wondering on the opinion of buying New v Used

We don’t have a massive budget

But are weighing up between

Suzuki Baleno 2020 New $17990

Or a Hyundai Accent 2019 25000km $16500

  • Going to just be a work car for my wife,
need it pretty soon car needs to be under 2 years old and low Ks

Hence reason these 2 stood out a little more

Any thoughts?

Cheers

I wish but unfortunately this is the budget we have

Brand new, but does it really have to be the Baleno? Take the Swift for a little extra

    • +1 to Swift

your first year of car ownership will lose you 1/3rd of the value of the vehicle. By the time it's 4 years old, that'll be half gone.

The sweet spot seems to be if you buy a quality brand (honda/toyota) at 3 years old and sell around 7 years old while it still has some life in it.

You can likely pick up what was a $55k (new) AWD toyota kluger for around $25k at 36 months old for example. by the time it's 7 years old it'll still be worth $10k..

So lose 15k value over four years on something 2nd hand or lose 30k over 3 years (10 k per year) when it's new.

Of course servicing and other costs, tyres etc will pop up in that timeframe, which is one of the benefits of new, unlikely to need major consubables in 1st 3 years.

Overblown and this doesn't apply on the time of COVID with second hand prices are ridiculously high it makes bnew prices very attractive.

Feel free to link a 1 year old car that lost 1/3 bnew price or a $10K 7 year old Kluger

      • I was going off red book research, but yes looking at real car sales they do seem higg right now.

i.e. the kluger I "researched" only as an example, is around that price ($18k) for an 8 year old model, and no, I woudn't necessarily buy THAT over a new car.
but seeing as everyone's being deliberately obtuse to the point being made… I'll make it more specificallt.

New cars that are around 18k -
        https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/2020/between-15000-20000/
        Great Wall, Suzuki, Kia

Used 3-4 year old card that are around 18k.
        Honda, Mazda, Toyota, Volkswagen.

Personally I'd go for the more quality brand, knowing that for example on sale today:
2017 Toyota Camry RZ = 22k - where the current equivalent new (the Camry SX not the V6, the 2.5:) is $38.6k - hence what I meant about losing at least 1/3rd

And that was a totally random pick.

So you can get a better class car for the same money, generally speaking.
Buying new is never the best option if money is tight, it's better to buy adter the first couple of years depreciation have gone, and move it on before it becomes a servicing handful.

        • The Camry RZ isn't an equal to the SX, more like the Ascent Sport.

Even then, the Camry had a huge model change in 2018, with far more safety and tech features like Apple Carplay/Android Auto being made available ($199 upgrade cost)

For $22k you'd be far better off with a 2018 Ascent 2.5L which is at the tail end of warranty, yet still has a few Capped Services left (which are every 12m/15,000kms, not 9m/12,500kms like the older model).

        • I’m sure the OP is considering vehicles similar to what you can buy new for $18k, or perhaps one size up eg maybe $25new. not a car that was originally closer to $60k mike a Kluger in a completely different category.

OP is considering an $18K car, how can a brand new $18K car lose $30K over 3 years? Example?

    • +1

OP is looking at small runaround cars, and you just suggested a 3yo Kluger?

      Seriously?

Your username details your comment 😂

      • I wasn't suggesting a Kluger, I was giving a view on how depreciation works.

      .

I quoted the only part of your post that is accurate.

  • Just looking for something under 2 years old in the $18k category.. best 2 we have liked so far are the two mentioned.
Any opinions on these 2 as choices or is there something better to look at?

    • Do you have any idea of what sort of car you want? One of your choices is a tiny underpowered buzzbox, the other is a bit bigger with a normal engine. What is it you are after?

      • I think they are both pretty similar in size from what I seen but it’s the size we sort of need

    • My sister had her heart set on a Hyundai Accent 3 years ago until I took her to test drive a KIA Rio. She fell in love with the KIA and couldnt believe all the features that came as standard on it compared to the Accent (large touch screen, more air bags, audi-esque design, reversing camera). Plus it has a 7 year warranty. Only issue is it doesn't have any guts, but as a red P plater she didn't mind. She still loves it to this day.

Thank you I will look into it :)

        • Yes, for the budget you have go for a Kia picanto.

Are there any other requirements than ‘work car’ any likelihood of passengers, luggage? Preference for sedan or hatch?

    • Yes we would like a touch bigger in Size MG3 is too small for reference, hatch preferably

  • Used toyota still in warranty.

  • @statman87 what did you end up choosing and how has it turned out?

  • Just wanted to tag along as I'm in a similar situation. Really wanted a specific car but this inflated covid market now has that thrown out the window.

Had some friends that were going to sell their cars, yet I'm still waiting 6+ months later so given up on them.

I've come across a very low km Ford Fiesta for under 15k or I could just fork out a similar amount for a new car. I'm chasing an economical car as I'll want to road trip when possible (4WD out of the equation).

Generally speaking I know that new cars aren't a great investment but with this current market maybe the extra warranty etc would make it worthwhile? Thoughts?
