Is It Legal to Change The Badge of a Car?

Hi,

Is it legal to change the badge of a car such as replacing the badge on a Toyota 86 with a Subaru BRZ badge - just an example?

If a cop was to run plates behind me and see the licence plate belongs to an 86 but my car has a Subaru BRZ badge can I get pulled over and get the plates seized or even arrested for it since they might think the plates are stolen since I changed the badge?

If I were unfortunate to get into an accident will I have a difficult time dealing with insurance because of the modification?

Many Thanks :D

  • Yes def will get in trouble and if u get in the accident insurance company may refuse to repair it

  • If it is illegal and fines could be issued most state governments would be able to pay off their debt with all the CHEV commodores running around.

I know people in the 80s who brought Nissan utes instead of the falcon just to get the extra 12 months warranty.

  • Obviously not illegal, but why would you?

  • Next post: is it legal to change windscreen wipers myself?

Yes it is :) …according to the manufacturer and dealership. They miss out on their over priced servicing fee of $300+ for windscreen wiper replacement

      • At $300, they replace the windscreen for you too.

Please put a Type R badge on it too.

    • That new AMG MIII Type R tuned by TRD Nismo.

OP i would be very careful if i was you, my best friends neighbor had highway patrol pull a gun on him because he removed the badges from his car. Its technically not your property but that of vic roads, who have supreme authority. Tread with caution.

    • lol @ all the ozmorons who negged this thinking i was being serious.

He’s not trolling. I know a few people who think it’s the law to have the badge on your car. I found this out when I went to remove mine and everyone told me that would be illegal.

  • Yes, it's legal.

  • You can change and modify and external parts legally, but not modify the engine as it is a safety issue.

  • Just try not to sell the car under subaru brz badge..
    That would be (probably) illegal..

Suggestion: try Apple sticker or Tesla badge instead.
Or get a custom number plate that reads 5U3ARU

  • Only illegal if you put an STI badge on a WRX. Shame on you who do it.

    nice shitpost lol

  • Just put a ‘Bow tie’ badge on it!

  • Hyundais are more reliable

You could replace the holden commodore badge with toyota lexcen with no issues whatsoever :D

  • back in the day with separate letters in holes in the bodywork I saw the odd Holden rebadged as an Oldhen

my favourite was a motorbike with tank label WOFTAM - it may have been a Triton - Triumph engine in Norton featherbed frame

I wondered about this label I'd never seen - finally asked the surly owner what WOFTAM meant

he snarled 'Waste Of F#cking Time And Money !!!'

I'm not sure if you've noticed but there are a handful of cars with Autobot/Decepticon badges. I think the police are aware of them but can't do anything as they're too powerful to stop.

Ofcourse you can't change the badges, especially to transformer ones, imagine changing it and then having police need assistance, jailtime for impersonation.

People who put chev badges in place of holden ones should have their cars crushed

  • I've seen a Toyota 86 with a Lexus badge before. 🤣

Is this the same question as asking if it’s ok to put an Apple sticker on my PC?

    • +2

What else is there to do with those stupid apple stickers?

  • Aint nobody gonna tell me my Lexus is actually a Toyota. The Lexus badge is the truth.

  • Its also illegal to colour in your badge with a permanent marker. There must be a lot of hard bogans around because i see them everywhere!

You seem to be copping quite some flack for asking this question - but to be honest I don't think is such a silly question. Whether you do or not is a separate thing (I personally don't care what you do) - but asking this from a legal standpoint is something I would be curious about as well. Anyways!

I think it's fairly well understood that a cars badge/model labels aren't required at all. They can be debadged or rebadged without needing to notify anyone.

Legally a cars make/model etc are registered by the state body and can be found online using a rego check. The badges do not need to be in place in the car. The VINs are the important part and must match or be visible on a car (and they don't live on the badge unless it's a Toyota 86 or Subaru Brz).

The fact that people don't know the above is what is amusing to all here.

Especially given some drive a sportscar which are generally known and used for various modifications. Least of which is debadging.

Off tangent - Here is an example of a rebadged Kia Stinger…

Fair enough mate, thanks for sharing. Honestly, I did not know all of that and can't say I've really thought about it at all. I guess my point is that sometimes people (myself included) don't know things and go to forums to learn more about things they don't already know about.

Appreciate the extra info though - thanks!

    • This question just goes to show how stupid some people can be, and its quite sad.

  • This is a joke, right?

  • Nah it's fine, I own a Holden Falcon XR8 Clubsport

In all seriousness, no it's not legal

    • Does it have Vtec?

  • Must be ‘legal’ thousands of ‘bogans’,err,Commodore drivers can’t be wrong, they all have Chevy ‘bow ties’ on the grille.

  • A lady at our work (in SA, Unley council) got a parking fine, but soon after was notified that she didn't have to pay because the parking inspector had mis-identified the make of her car. Not sure why that mattered, but it crossed my mind to re-badge my own to have a shot at fooling the inspector for easier free parking (never did it tho).

  • Just buy a BRZ if brand matters you and to your social circles.

No it’s not illegal just make sure you have insurance and you pay your rego on time.

  • Back in NZ in the 1980s, I had a Mazda Rx3 coupe and put 808 badges on it .

    • No one wanted an 808, but an RX3….

Nowadays 808s go for stupid money because RX3 is ridiculous money and an 808 is fairly easy to convert.

  • If you are a getaway driver then people might report the wrong car so if you are a criminal don't do this as you will get in more trouble
