Why Do 128GB Android Tablets Cost Twice as Much as 128GB Android Phones?

128gb Android phones can be had for sub-$400 these days, but options for 128gb tablets are far more limited and on average cost twice as much. I don't believe it's because of screen size, which on its own, should only cost fractions more. If anything, phones are technically more difficult to manufacture, with the need to miniaturize components and pack in LTE receivers.

Expandable storage isn't a cure-all because android often makes you jump thru hoops if you want to bypass internal storage when installing apps.

  • Do you have a specific phone and tablet in mind? It’s very hard to determine why without factoring in the details. Also, phones should be cheaper because it is produced at a much larger scale than tablets. Tablets sales have been stalling, if not declining, for some years now. Hence, manufacturers seem to pay less attention to it.

    • JB Hifi, 128gb phone - currently, Vivo, Oppo, Motorola, Samsung Galaxy can be had for less than $400.

JB and Goodguys, Tablet 128gb cheapest Samsung Galaxy $649. The rest $799 and past $1000

I guess scale and competition is a factor…

Just feel that tablets are more suited to larger storage but it's relatively price inaccessible…

  • I don’t think it’s true.

Supply and demand. Everyone needs a mobile phone, and there are lots of competitors in the mobile phone market. And on average, you will replace your cellphone once every 2 to 3 years. And you might even buy a spare phone for a different purpose.

But not everyone needs Android tablets. There are overall less competitors in the tablet market and so there's a lot of room for product segmentation. So you might realistically only have around a couple of dozen options in the low end, and even less at the high end
