At this point should be $299 RRP. $199 for the Lite.

    • +7

You can just barely reach those prices used, let alone new

      • Because people keep paying these ridiculous prices. Nintendo must be laughing at this point.

The Switch is basically a rebadged Shield Tablet from 2014 with a controller stuck on the side. The fact that Nintendo can still manage to sell this 6 year old tech for $469 RRP is mind blowing.

We've been hearing for a long time now rumours of an updated model. I bet Nintendo keep delaying the release because why release a new model with lower margins when idiots keep paying such high prices for out dated tech.

I get the allure of first party Nintendo games (I've been a fan since I got my SNES as a kid), but this is just getting ridiculous.

          I think it's fairly priced.

The mobility of the console, its size and the power it packs to run things like Witcher 3, Zelda, Metro on the go is Unmatched.

Perfect to bring to a friends place and kids play co-op

            @frostman:

The mobility of the console, its size and the power

All of which the Shield Tablet from 2014 had. You guys do get that the internals are near identical between each device right?

It's a joke that the only hardware update Nintendo has given to 6 year old tech is a bigger battery model, with no price drop.

            • @PainToad: Well, there is a ratio of power : size.

There is a fine line what people accept to be mobile, what if Nintendo upgrades the GPU but the unit becomes 30% larger and/or heavier?
Would people find it easy to play in hand-held?

You do realise your average modern mid range smart phone is smaller and more powerful than the Switch right?

There's no reason a more powerful Switch would need to be larger.

                • +2

@PainToad: why aren't mobile games as good as Switch games?

                  • @ltwo:

why aren't mobile games as good as Switch games?

Because unfortunately no one wants to pay for AAA titles on mobile devices. The precedent was set early that mobile games should only cost a few bucks or be shitty freemium games.

                    It's not a technical limitation, it's a business decision.

                    • +4

@PainToad: Phones also have problems with thermals. Every phone I know starts thermal throttling after playing a graphically demanding game for just a few minutes.
I agree they’re able to maintain near RRP prices due to such high demand (COVID-19 probably helped a ton). If it’s selling well why should they drop the price?
I do hope Nintendo releases an upgraded Switch model. I can see the Switch struggling with games like the new Hyrule Warriors.

        • +2

I think PainToad makes a fair point.. price shouldn't have been the same after so many years

          • -2

@morediscount: You know how supply and demand works right?

            • @Singu1arity:

You know how supply and demand works right?

Do you? I made it pretty clear I understand that the reason the price is so high still, is because people keep paying it, ie. there's a demand.

          • @morediscount: Agreed. 4 years after launch and we have a new Switch with better battery and upgraded processor and Switch Lite.

Throw in Covid and lockdowns, portable gaming seems to be the way and Nintendo can keep selling at their consoles at the price they want.

      • Seems to be more of a supply issue. I consider it overpriced at $399 for what I'd get out of it. YMMV.

What's the precedent for lowering the price of the most popular console on the market?

PS4 is still $400 everywhere and it's the previous generation, launched in 2013.

Switch is current generation, with a library of exclusive titles, launched in 2017.

Pretending that ANYONE cares about power-specs of consoles at this point is absurd; it was an advertising angle used by Microsoft because they had no games. It's irrelevant. These aren't cars, the horsepower means nothing.

Also, 6 year old tech? Controllers came out for consoles in the 1980's. So by your logic they're selling 40 year old tech… what an outrage. They should be giving them away!

And the smartphones aren't more powerful. They're technically faster, but whenever a decent game is run on them, they overheat and their battery dies. They're not functional gaming devices, and everyone knows it. The AAA games don't get made for phones because the phones aren't made for games.

If the Nvidia Shield was so good, why hasn't it sold 60 million units?

      • +2

Alas, I only have one upvoter to give for a comment with so many good points haha

      • Have another upvote, your points are spot on, it has nothing to do with the age of the technology and everything to do with the whole package.

Nintendo are clearly doing something right and have every right to charge what people are willing to pay, that's how business works, contrary to what some other entitled whiners on here would like you to believe.

I'm glad Nintendo have managed to remain successful after all these years.

Wasn't the Shield a static TV unit? I think everyone is forgetting the most important aspect of the switch, portability.

When I brought it, it wasn't a console to me, it was the WORLDS BEST POWERFUL HANDHELD. And that's still true now.

        • -2

Wasn't the Shield a static TV unit? I think everyone is forgetting the most important aspect of the switch, portability.

facepalm No, there was a tablet version as well. Which has near identical specs to the Switch. Educate yourself here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shield_Tablet

What's the precedent for lowering the price of the most popular console on the market?

Every previous generation. The Xbox One, PS4 and Switch generation has been weird with pricing.

Pretending that ANYONE cares about power-specs of consoles at this point is absurd; it was an advertising angle used by Microsoft because they had no games. It's irrelevant.

You won't think it's irrelevant soon when third-party games dry up because current gen cross platform games simply won't run on the current Switch.

If the Nvidia Shield was so good, why hasn't it sold 60 million units?

Lack of killer software. Which I acknowledged is the reason the Switch is still selling.

They're technically faster, but whenever a decent game is run on them, they overheat and their battery dies.

facepalm The Switch is running basically the same hardware as the Shield Tablet, which is an ARM CPU Android tablet, which is basically a large smart phone. There's nothing special about the Switch other than the software. Switch software could easily be ported over the Shield Tablet, or any similar (or more powerful) Android device if Nintendo would allow it (which they would never do).

        • +1

So there's no precedent. Lowering the price for no reason would be absurd behaviour.

No one cares about third party games, I buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo games. There's enough of them already.

I've played games on smartphones and they overheat and the battery quickly dies. I've played better looking and more complicated games on a Switch and the battery lasts for a while and it doesn't overheat.

It would have been easier if you just admitted your original post was a complete rambling mess, instead of trying to defend points that have been proven wrong.

            @CONUT:

So there's no precedent. Lowering the price for no reason would be absurd behaviour.

I have said countless times, I get why Nintendo are charging the prices they are. My personal opinion is I believe people are stupid for paying so much for such outdated tech. I'm happy with my Wii U and will wait until either a new device is announced or there's a price drop. If you didn't/don't want to wait, that's great, you play the exclusively earlier than me. Video games aren't that important to me that I can't wait a few months/years.

I've played games on smartphones and they overheat and the battery quickly dies. I've played better looking and more complicated games on a Switch and the battery lasts for a while and it doesn't overheat.

Sounds like you need to buy better phones. Because again, the Switch's internals are nothing special, very similar to any regular ARM device.

It would have been easier if you just admitted your original post was a complete rambling mess, instead of trying to defend points that have been proven wrong.

Firstly, it's my opinion. I'm entitled to my opinion. Why so butthurt about someone having a differing opinion about a video game console? Much more important things going on in the world to get so angry about.

Secondly, what has "been proven wrong"? Nothing you have said has "proved" anything. You've just stated your opinion and it happens to be different than yours.

Can we just agree to disagree?

            • +2

              @PainToad: I'm still playing my Wii U as well. I don't own a switch.

  • +12

Nah. $99 because it’s just plastic, wires and a bit of glass. There’s more plastic in a storage tub and those are $8 as an example..

$349 was good on eBay Black Friday sales 1000 units only

    • +5

Pretty crazy how it's held its price. I bought mine for $379 back in 2017.

      • and tell me how mario kart 8 price hasn't changed much since then? loll

      • For switch

        2017 - $382
        2018 - $369

        For lite

        2019 - $229
        2020 - $210

I have since sold off one of each and surprisingly I didn’t make any loss at all.

        • 2019 $349 includes mk8 :)
It was black friday via amazon, stacked with 5% SB and $50 Zip, made it $284. The only reason i created zip acct

          • @countmein: its that $50 back just ended not long ago?

            • @yuisakas: yes it was long time ago, 2019, just put some historical price to comment above

        • when and where sold lite for $210?

  • Nintendo switch pro is coming soon, no wonder they start selling the current version.

    • Come on, everyone knows to wait for the Nintendo switch max instead

      • +3

It's going to have VR without goggles and SNES cartriges compatibility. So they're selling the current version.

      • +2

I think I’ll wait for the Switchi Advance XL

    • +4

      Super Nintendo Switch

    • when will it come out
I searched everywhere online some sites says it may not come out another year or 2
I am considering to buy one, but with that price still think it cost a lot for 4 year old console

      • they'll announce it in Apr 21 I heard, I don't think they will release it in another 2 years, maybe next year.

mario kart 9 will also be announced.

        • +2

So far we've only got rumors and speculation. I'll believe it when it's officially announced.

          • @FireRunner: True.

When you hear "When will Switch Pro be released?" always remember "How long is a piece of string?" :D

      • +2

This, and the fact I still have to complete all my Wii U games (Zelda WW and BoTW, Super Mario 3d world..)

    • Do you mean "God knows when for sure" right?

Either way, there is nothing to compete with Nintendo Switch so Nintendo does what they please.

I only bought one coz my partner, she has a lot of fun with it, she can take it to work, etc.
      I prefer my XBX.

    • with literally no news, specs or pics, this is pure speculation, and if it comes out in November 2021, that's not exactly SOON isn't it?

  • wish I had the extra cash

$359 same deal last Black Friday via Amazon + ZipPay

    • Amazon was selling for $349 on Black Friday.

  • Nintendo Switch Grey Joy-Con Console + Mario Kart 8 Deluxe & Online Membership @ $349 with another 10% off Ebay cards was a good price Black Friday :)

Sold too fast missed on my 2nd account with me not willing to buy it without Ebay 10% off cards : (

    • missed out myself, but found the exploit grey units they were supposed to sell on Cyber Monday and brought one, they lost 200 units before they stopped sales on Friday.

  • Is online even worth paying for? I mean apart from Splatoon 2 off the top of my head I can't think of any other games worth the multiplayer

    • Animal crossing and maybe pokemon.

      • Not this gens pokemon thou, sold like hotcakes as usual, but it's 100% a samey experience as last time. HD graphics can't carry a copy and pasted gameplay from the last decade.

But I still have to buy a switch myself because now I'm tempted with Monster Hunter Rise :(

  • Can TGG price match Amazon / Target?
