Any Ideas Where Can I Work on My Car for Free?

Hi guys,

So my power steering rack and pinion shit itself and I just got a remanufactured one and need somewhere with level ground to jack up my car, my driveway is too steep and I don't wanna get under it without it being stable even with jack stands. I don't have a garage and friends live too far from where I am uncomfortable driving to. I would probs need 3-5 hours to fix it. Pls help.

And no I can't go to a mechanic because I'm broke.

Take it to the servo, get permission first.

  • There are places that rent out hoists/workshop space at quite reasonable rates.

Find a level public car park that’s not busy if any says anything just say you’ve broken down.

  • Just go to train station carpark. Should be lots of empty spot.

  • A (not too busy) carpark? Assuming your car is steerable and your repair is solid to drive it back.

    Industrial precinct on a Sunday.

This is what I used to do when I first moved to the city. Pretty much the only people there were guys working on project cars at their factories and learner drivers.

Learner drivers and being under a cars on stands. Sounds like a recipe

Not really, in the industrial estate I used the learners never went into the courts.

    • This is sounding like the best option. Thanks

Your local Men's Shed? I'm not totally sure how it works, but may be worth checking out.

  • Find a deep curbside gutter. Drive up parallel with left side of the car on top of the gutter. Car is now propped up and you can get underneath it easy.

    • If it was an oil change I could do this. But need to take off both front wheels.

  • Give your local Bunnings a call. Ask if you can use a few spots for a couple of hours.
