What research have you done so far? Is it 7 people permanently or just occasionally?

  • +6

    35 possible cars

    Wasn't that difficult…

    • +2

As with most of these posts, OP is looking for recommendations, experiences and opinions.

      • +10

        And will disregard them all

Or will stretch to $40k all of a sudden

Or will realise that no, a 7-seater won't comfortably fit 4 adults, 3 kids, grandparents when they visit, the family dog and cat, and luggage for a cross country 12 month trip

Or will buy a Camry Hybrid

If you look at the Carsales search, there's 3 options - Outlander, X-Trail, and a Mahindra… that's it. It's not like the choices are vast and it'll be hard to narrow it down. If OP is bound to those parameters, they have only 3 cars to go out and look at from the outset.

        Seems simple enough

        • You kind of proved my point… that sounds like advice to me?

          • +4

@Ryanek: Which is what my original link was, before your condescending reply…

However I'm sorry to say I didn't give any recommendations, experience or opinions, as you suggested they want. So I'm not sure how I proved your point…

There are very few options for a 7 seat SUV, max $30k, max 2 years old.

        • +4

          Mahindra XUV5000 it is then!
Even a couple grand spare for the first tow back to the garage

  • +1

I think the only car that meets that requirement is a Chinese built MG SUV

  • +2

As mentioned, 7 seat occasionally or regularly? What/who are you putting in the back row?
30k won't go real far for a true 7 seater that's new/near new. X Trail might be the only option but I don't think the 3rd row is great?

Its amazing how often this gets asked.

It’s ridiculous how often these get asked with no additional info.

      • +1

        Almost need a template :)

        • +1

Or a sticky with some guidelines with what info is helpful to provide and indicating ‘recommend me a car’ without a story might be deleted.

  • Good luck.

Have a look at the Skoda Kodiaq - can be found second hand in the $30's (likely mid to upper 30's).

    • +7

Hmmmm, that's some interesting mafs. Didn't know mid to high 30s was under $30k

      • +4

Oh cmon, you know how these posts go by now!

  • VW Caddy

  • Kia Sorento is good looking with lots of features OP

    • The Sorento is a bubble with boringly shaped headlamps and taillamps.

      • OP does not care about looks. It only says up to 2yo $30k 7 seater.

        • I replied to someone who said the Sorento is good looking, which is ridiculous considering the CX-8, CX-9, Santa Fe (and soon the new Kluger) exist. Sorento is not near $30K anyway.

          • @Techie4066: Looks are always subjective. You and the other poster have proven that.

My point is that the OP has shown no inclination to require a vehicle that ‘looks good’ either so who cares what it kooks like. The Sorrento fits their outlines criteria if you can purchase one a couple of years old for $30k. There is a couple of 19 models on Carsales near $30k. With good negotiations it might be possible.

    Why not get a MPV?

  • Mini!

My daughter and her family of 6 have a Mitzi Outlander. Price is $30k. The back two seats are really for kids but as a daily commute and day tripper it’s been just right. Quality isn’t in the luxury world by any means but it does the job. Not what I would buy for myself but they have done 40,000k’s happily. Before that they had a cheap second hand Toyota Tarago which was probably better as a car with better seating but more expensive if you wanted new.

  • +2

    Why an SUV?
You can get a roomier 7 seater with a more compact footprint for half the price eg kia rondo

  • Toyota Tarago

  • +1

    Honda Odyseey

Don't get an SUV if you need seven seats, get an mpv. If you don't need the seven seats that often, get literally any other car and rent something bigger on the rare occasion you need seven seats.

Mitsubishi Outlander 7 seater- the 3rd row seats are just for kids or backup. Could get cramped up for a family trip. Recommended to put a tow bar or roof basket for family trips.
You don't expect a 4WD with that price, but will do the job for most of the occasions. Quite reliable and warranty, capped servicing and free roadside assistance is good.

Honda CR-V could be an option. The current model started retailing in oz from mid 2017 and there's a 7 seat option available. It reviewed well but you need to take into consideration that it's a compact crossover so fully loaded it'll be cramped from a luggage perspective. Typically in the smaller SUV's (including the Mitsubishi Outlander) the extra seats aren't ideal for adults.

Disclosure: I have a 2018MY CRV VTI-LX and I really like it, but mine is not the 7 seat version. There's plenty of reviews. You could surely pick up a near new one or one with low km for $30K.

We have both a 7 seat option of the CR-V and a Mercedes GLC-250 (5 seats). With the seats down on the CRV it has slightly more room then the Merc, but put those seats up and luggage is really restricted to maybe some backpacks or gym bags maybe. No room for even esky size cooler.

      Just FYI.

If its occasionally - LOVE our CR-V for what it does.

More permanently moving 7 people? As other have suggested MPV would be more practical.

Toyota Prius V(2nd hand). It has 7 seats, excellent fuel efficiency and cheap to run.

  • I'd have look at a Kia Carnival.
Maybe not quite a SUV, but certainly more space at the back. I'm 60+ and my wife and I have travelled for an hour quite happily in the back row… and the dog was in his cage behind us!
