Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop i7-10750H/16GB/512GB SSD/RTX 2060 6GB $1737 + $9.95 Delivery @ Harvey Norman

210

I am a first time OzBargain poster; please feel free to critique my post.
I've been hovering for the right gaming laptop (my teacher recommended ~1660ti, i7) to use for my upcoming Uni course (Bachelor of Architecture).
Although I am aware that there are some Banga deals atm on 2070 Super laptops, however, the Acer Nitro 5 is exactly what I needed, and I anticipate will result in a tad less buyer's remorse when the 30 series Nvidia Laptops emerge.

I have just purchased this model from Harvey Norman Online:

Acer Nitro 5
Built for Productivity
Powered by an Intel Core i7-10750H processor, the Acer Nitro 5 15.6-inch i7-10750H/16GB/512GB SSD/RTX 2060 6GB Laptop handles hardware-intensive applications seamlessly. Coupled with a 16GB RAM, it also lets you multitask without drastic drops in speed.
Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080
Wireless Networking 802.11ax (2x2), Bluetooth

LAPTOP: $1737
SHIPPING: $9.95 (Australia Wide Delivery)
~$1650 TOTAL Via ShopBack method.

Has good reviews and some clean RGB backlighting (personally I love the distinction of the directional keys).

I used the ShopBack app to purchase $1600 worth of Harvey norman gift cards (at 5% off), and finished the order with a prepaid visa card that I saved around 8% on; Saving around $90 on the above price (long-term/when the cashback clears).
Anyone using the ShopBack method should save approximately $87.

      Getting a little old now…

Thought I should add that I could not find any details of the refresh rate, so I am assuming it is 60hz (which is all I need). If anyone else knows otherwise, let us know. =P

The Predator Helios (which is almost exactly the same device for the same price) has a 240hz screen

      Edit:
      Just found the Nitro info:

You should be able to overclock the refresh rate if it is only 60Hz I have a gaming laptop that I overclocked the refresh from 75Hz to 100Hz

    • 144hz

At this moment in time, it's an okay deal.

However, if you account for laptop deals from the past 2 months, it's a very subpar.

    EG. Acer Nitro 5 15.6-Inch i5-10300H/8GB/512GB/RTX2060 6GB Gaming Laptop $1278 @ Harvey Norman
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/593166

Is an i7 and 16GB RAM worth $450? Nope.

(Yes, I know it's no longer available. I'm just using it as an example of the pricing that has been achived in the last 60 days)

    • I do agree with you, I would have liked to have noticed the above deal when it was on (have been busy with life, and wasn't looking).
If you were me, would you wait for a better deal? (Seeing as I start 1 March, and have been instructed to have a spec laptop day one)
If it were up to me I would have waited till way later this year to buy, just got caught needing to buy in this awkward time of transition in the gpu world.

      Loving the feedback ^.^

You got about 6 weeks, I'd wait.

        • +1

Yeah fair enough, I could try canceling (though I'm aware this is unlikely to work). If I'm stuck with it in only really wearing a rough loss of ~$300 - $350 value. And that's ok (considering I still need the core count of the i7), take me a day or two to earn back the difference :P
          I'm learning.

Bachelor of Architecture - Ask your professor/tutor regarding which programs will be mainly used in the first three years of UNI. Research if those programs are more CPU heavy? RAM heavy? or GPU heavy? Or do they utilise all those components. If you need a more CPU/RAM heavy oriented laptop for the workloads, I would recommend waiting for a deal on a laptop like this:

    https://www.centrecom.com.au/asus-tuf-gaming-fa506iv-al011t-…

The 4900H has a higher core count compared to the Intel counterpart, as well as being faster, and has double the RAM capacity (which from what I remember, was mostly what was needed for engineering and architecture software back in the day), maybe now the programs utilise hardware acceleration with GPU support too, making the GPU's even more important.

Of course, might be even better waiting a couple of months for the new generation laptops, while pulling all-nighters at UNI (we've all been there lol).

    • I will look into it. Yeah I did want to wait for the 30 series laptops, however I figured the initial wave of 30 series (gpu) laptops may end up being a pain to land (not to mention the starting prices might not be crash hot), and if I don't 'need' more I figured aim low now, upgrade down the road. I couldn't find as much in the way of good amd laptop deals; I was seriously considering one.

Your point about the 30 series laptops is probably true, much like everything else over the last few months. They'll probably sell out within the first hour or so, and then it's a waiting game.

  • wasn't rtx2070 laptop similar price recently, also i expect it go lower very soon once the rtx30series laptops come out

I think this is a great deal if you want/need to get a gaming laptop now, as OP did. 2060 is still a great 1080p GPU. What's the upgradability like?

    • Upgradability is good (specifically in this case suiting what I need). The 16gb ram in description is a single stick, there is a second slot where I can add an additional 16gb (it was also highly recommended to go for 32gb over just 16 as apparently the software we use will near consume whatever you give it; ram-wise). It has two m.2 slots (one of which is used from stock. And an additional drive bay for further storage (my teacher recommend at least 1.5tb storage). I realized this may not have been the most awesome deal out, but it seems to perfectly wrap around my needs, in regards to spec for Uni. :)
