Is there a car vacuum that actually works?

Hi all,

Looking for any recommendations for a car vacuum that actually works and does not cost a small fortune like a Dyson.

Anyone know of any that are decent. Thanks for your time.

    Shop vac from bunnings

  • if you want portability - I was going to say Dyson… nevermind… but you can use that around the home too.

There are plenty of stick vacuum deals on here that would suit.

So you not have a house vacuum? They work pretty well

Not always practical, especially for those living in apartments with no power near their car park.

True, but OP didn’t point out they want one 12v or cordless. Others are suggesting corded models, like wet/dry shop vacuums and we don’t know if they suit, but are a good option.

You’re definitely right, a standard house vacuum, while not as small/flexible, would still do a good job if you had access to power.

Get a wet and dry from Bunnings or Supercheap.

    • Thank you I will look into those :)

I just recently bought a Vax handheld vacuum. Cannot do the job as it seems not powerful enough plus the battery ran out very quickly (less than 10 mins). Wont recommend.

  • Numatic and Metrovac are the two big car detailing brands for vacs but if you already have a vac for home use it'll work well enough. Add a long crevice tool and small turbo head if you can as they'll work far better than your regular floor heads.

  • Love my Dyson but actually find it is not very good for the car. The collection bucket thing gets in the way all the time when you are trying to maneuver it around in the hard to reach places. A plug in vacuum is better IMO.

I find the flexi crevice tool really good for getting in to the nooks and crannies under and around the seats

  • Ryobi shop vacs work well and are cheap if you already are invested in their batteries.

    Wet and dry for sure
This Ryobi combined with the accessory kit. About $160 all up and will be heaps better than a Dyson.
Can also use it to shampoo your carpets/seats as well as clean your garage, shed, workshop etc…They're pretty handy.

    • What is your method of cleaning carpet and seats with that equipment?

      • I use Bowden's Fabracadabra and Orange Agent diluted with warm water in a pump pack type bottle like this to soak it then scrub with a firm bristled brush
Not dis-similar to this guide but the Spot Clean sprays it for you.

You could also use diluted laundry detergent, the actual Bissell stuff etc but those products work well from my experience.

        • I like the look of that. Thanks so much for the write up.

    • Thanks, I like the look of this option too. Appreciate your insight.

  • One of the problems with cars is getting all of the crud out of the carpet. So, try using a small hand-broom to sweep some it, so the vacuum doesn’t need as much suction, you can also do this to get to harder to get to areas, like next to the seats and stuff. The other thing would be getting a cheap turbo head that can get some of the stuff out of the carpet too. A turbo brush makes a lot of difference I’ve always found.

As other people have suggested, you’ll probably find that a shop-vac with a bag to be the cheapest option that has a reasonable amount of suction, but it won’t compare to more expensive models.

Protip: Bash the carpet repeatedly with the back of a bannister brush to loosen the dirt, then vacuum, repeat until clean. It's what detailers usually do.

      • I'd never heard of a bannister brush before, so I googled it. It seems to be what I've been calling a hearth brush, or just "the brush and shovel brush" ;-)

Might be better off just going to the local car wash, 3 bucks gets my entire wagon done and floor mats

    No. Next question.

  • I just use my Dyson v11. Does the job really well.
