        • Conservatives specifically. It's not like all of them are banned, but they could be next. Good reason to move to another platform.

          Even left-winger show concern https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2021/01/09/aclu-warns-of-… and https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2021/01/09/trump-twit…

@ozhunter: Why? Do you follow their pages on social media? I sure don't. I couldn't care less if twitter etc have banned trump, coz either way I don't see his shit

            • @spackbace: Why what?

I follow some. Why use a platform where Big Tech will only let you see what they decide?

Twitter banning Trump is a good thing. I think in the last few days, Gab has had more people sign up than in the last few years.

              • +3

@ozhunter: "Why use a platform where Big Tech will only let you see what they decide?"
That's a bit of an overstatement of what's happening don't you think? The president was inciting violence, insisting that his 'people' should storm the Capitol building.

“If you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore”
                - Donald Trump a week before the Capitol building protests/riots/violence

              • +1

@ozhunter: Twitter is a product. It’s kind of up them how they sell their product.

                • -2

@snooksy: I didn't say they can't ban people. Then there's the whole platform vs publisher argument.

          • +1

@ozhunter: Conservatives are not being banned. It’s nutty radicals using lies to promote hate and violence towards their perceived enemies, and to build their power and wealth. There is no end to the numbers of conservatives freely using social media with no risk of censure. Think Romney, Bush or the late John McCain and their vast swathes of supporters. No true conservative would want anything to do with race-baiting radicals like Trump.

      • +3

Conservatives can say whatever they want without issue.

It's the nut jobs with opinions completely disconnected from reality who cry about censorship when no one else wants to listen to them.
Crazy to still claim its censorship when the crying has turned to terrorism, and they are still very free to keep saying what you want, just somewhere else please.

None of this is conservatism. It's endless whinging to the point of actual terrorism.

        • -2

I'd say they get banned because people are hearing them out.

Like Youtube has recently said they would take down videos that are basically anti-covid vaccine, don't agree with the WHO, and those the are doubtful of the the integrity of the US election. Even remember some keto youtubers had videos take down months ago.

Remember when the DNC guy tried to kill a bunch of republicans and was a member of hate groups and things got censored? lol never happened.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Congressional_baseball_sh…

    • You're right, I read your link and outraged at the censorship! Lets boycott wikipedia!!!

      • +6

Im talking about the bad stuff that happened due to the "not my president" movement, which involved this shooting and riots all over USA.
Noone moved to censor that movement.
Yet magically we need to scrub a anti-Biden president movement off the internet

        • -1

Guilty people have the most to hide. Just look at all the totalitarian states that have existed, they need censorship to hide the truth and push a false narrative, almost the exact same scenario as we see right now, Biden can't win without the help of totalitarian censorship to hide all of the fraud and corruption that he and the DNC have swept under the rug.

Just wait till our coming elections take the same wild swing to corruption, Americas fall to totalitarian rule will come to australia, we are Chinese puppets or American puppets haha

Remember when BLM and antifa set fire to everything in sight, and looted thousands of businesses, and were reported as "mostly peaceful protests".

The funny thing about people railing on freedom of speech, is the bulk of them are conservative & the movie V For Vendetta, quite rightly, had a conservative government as needing to control the populace, through lies & manipulation

    • +5

Movies are real life. High IQ take.

      • V For Vendetta…..Anon…..QAnon
        Derp, derp, derp….

        • +2

Sorry, I don't know about qanon, I generally don't take larping 4channers seriously. It is amusing to see the media, and you, baited by it though.

          • +1

@brendanm: What was amusing was that a guy with horns can garner an audience so readily
Peer reviewed science, playing out in real time…

            • @Boogerman: I think you're having the visions again. Guy with horns?

    • +2

Wow, so the people who are more censoring of others are the ones not wanting to control the populace?

    • Your missing the point of the movie, it isn't a right>left or left>right argument, that's all down to a made up story by some biased writer. The take away is that censorship is the enemy of the people, unless you like gulags, prison camps and "re-education" facilities by the tyrranical government's, which we are sitting by and watching unfold right now. We are watching the social exclusion of one side of politics and ultimate control by the radical left, if that continues, we are doomed to some kind of earthly hell.

      • No the movie was spot on. Conservative governments by definition try to control the populace.
That’s why the Morrison government is against a Royal Commission into the media in this country (because Murdoch keeps them in power with his enabling lies) & why they also introduced meta data laws. And just like in the movie they are all about fear mongering using the terrorist boogeyman - fear mongering that appeals to simpletons

        • Your seeing what you want to see. Nazis and stalin were radical leftist groups who flourished off censorship. I'm sure there were some Conservative tyrranical governments somewhere. The problem is any party, of any leaning to tilt toward corruption if we give them too much power. It's not a right vs left argument. Mankind is corrupt, and will abuse and censor if given the chance. Its up to us to force transparency and create a balance of power, which we are failing utterly at right now.

          • -1

@lew380: “Nazis were radical leftist group”

Cause they had ‘socialist’ in their name?
I guess the Liberal Party is left wing because they have the word ‘liberal’ in their name
            FFS

            • -1

              @Boogerman: The leftist nazis…

"Unlimited government, Centralized Economic Control, Wealth redistribution, and minimal Liberty under the general philosophy of Collectivism."

They are leftists. They tried to kill God with government, God won. The funny thing was that a many of the Wehrmacht were Christian, but they were equally punished when they protested to the senseless killings, most just ignored it and went kn with the war. The power of censorship and absolute government control, at a certain point, protesting is futile.

              • -1

@lew380: The whole foundation of SOCIALism & COMMUNism is engaging with SOCIety & the COMMUNity
                Labels only fool simpletons

                • +1

@Boogerman: Well I guess the several books I've read on the subject by experts and survivors is worthless. I should read more buzz feed like you and get a more narrow view of history.

You can't put anyone in a box, even Morriston is hardly a Conservative. He's been nothing but a disappointment to me, for reasons that you pointed out!

                  • -1

@lew380: Name one reputable scholarly historian or political scholar who considers the Nazi Party to have been left wing

                    • @Boogerman: "repurablle scholar" they are all left wing loonies.

                      https://paulhjossey.medium.com/the-nazis-were-leftists-deal-…

"The Nazi charter published a year later[1934] and coauthored by Hitler is socialist in almost every aspect. It calls for “equality of rights for the German people.” The subjugation of the individual to the state; breaking of “rent slavery,”; “confiscation of war profits,”; the nationalization of industry; profit sharing in heavy industry; large scale social security; the “communalization of the great warehouses and there being leased at low costs to small firms”; the “free expropriation of [privately owned] land for the purpose of public utility”; the abolition of “materialistic” Roman Law; the nationalization of education; the nationalization of the army; the nationalization of healthcare for the mother and child; state regulation of the press; and strong central power in the Reich. It was also racist and anti-immigrant."

Anti free speech, rascist identity politics, big government, anti capitalist and therefore Jews. Its mainly stated that he fought the communists to counter their leftist idealogue and thus, he is a right winger. In reality, wars are often fought by similar idealogies as they compete at the same level and battle over supremecy. They were very similar in almost every way. Even today you see leftists destroying leftists, and the divide between Conservative and right wingers are equally divisive, they threaten each others world views so intimitaly that they are very vile to each other.

From today's perspective, the nazis were as left wing as the communists and resemble antifa and the alt right very well. Note that the alt right share very little with the right, and share almost nothing with conservatives.

I won't be looking for alternatives as any issues I have with big Tech aren't great enough to warrant not using them.

If I don't want to be censored then will just communicate (or find info) as I did prior to big Tech…. You know back in the day when I didn't need to share my opinion with the whole (Ozbargain) world and just my close associates.

    • -2

I still use Big Tech products(windows pc, android phone, facebook, gmail, etc.) but slowly moving away from them. Friends, family, and co-workers on those platforms make it harder to leave. Don't see much reason to use some of their products when the alternatives seem just as good.

  • +3

I had a go at Twitter several years ago but abandoned it because activists seem to use it to hunt out people to attack/abuse.

It's all good for businesses and organisations to advertise and keep people abreast of current activities. I'll still visit Twitter to check out the latest posts by the Bureau of Meteorology, for example.

But as a propaganda engine for political views - there's only one real way it ends - and whoever owns/runs the platform will inevitably succumb to the temptation to filter that propaganda to suit personal goals. And that goes for largely any broadcast platform - almost all mainstream media (including government channels) have a particular political bias now.

So what's the solution? I don't think there is a solution. Almost every social media site, from Stack Overflow to Reddit, has its heyday for a period where people seem to engage in diverse views… but eventually a mob run the opposition out of town and all that remains is a feedback loop.

And the days of small Internet websites having a fair go are largely gone. Big commercial companies can pick and choose who gets support, who gets discovered in search engines, who can receive payments from a credit card, who gets to use cloud computing. It doesn't take much to block and hide content from the Internet - in fact the courts of Australia rely on companies to do so to protect commercial content owners today.

Pretty much agree with all of this. Good reason to support alternatives where possible.

  • Is it just me, or did anyone read Bitchute as Bitch Ute rather than (I assume) Bit Chute?

    • Now I can't unsee 😆

      • Best signage I've seen was a student book exchange, STUDENTSEXCHANGE.

    • haha… damage done, to how to decode it next time :D

      similar to this username webtherapist

    • Nope, I saw that too!

Similar thing happened with experts-exchange.com. They initially didn't have the hyphen in their URL, it was added later as expertsexchange was easily interpreted incorrectly…

  • I know a lot of traders are going to miss Trumps twitter with the Twit in power :)
`^ he could make markets move instantly .

  • Businesses hate people stirring up shit and that's why they booted or banned certain peoples and groups. Shit stirrers need to get in people's faces and intrude in people's lives. They believe they have a moral complex with high intelligence yet can't do simple tasks in their specialty, live in a shit hole wearing clothes that were in fashion two centuries ago. Anyone with common sense would ignore all politics, religion, and laws. Democracy is flawed, people are greedy and selfish by nature.

    • live in a shit hole wearing clothes that were in fashion two centuries ago.

      Holy sweeping statements Batman…!

I don't even know where to begin with such an idiotic argument lol

      • Nah I think you should start with the "anyone with commonsense would ignore all politics, religion, and law".

I think OPs personal preferences for interior decorating and fashion sense can wait.

  • You lost me at censorship…big tech have better things to do than police what you say. Seriously they do. Unfortunately they have to due to the abhorrent content that is posted on social media, their obligations, TOCs, public perception, etc.

    • They aren't obligated to do more than what the law requires, which Gab also complies with.

  • Social media is full of rubbish beside the supposed censorship. Seriously Parler is an absolute mess. Give up social media! It’s all rubbish. You are the product remember.

  • Gab is a really good social media platform, it was full of literal nazis a few years ago (a good laugh but not my cup of tea) but now that the conservatives have joined en mass, they should get drowned out and kicked off.

  • I am using the Maserati a lot less these days and have dusted off the old '67 Ford Mustang.

Figure old dodgy brake lock, up at 110kph, is far better than being controlled by some pimple faced pubescent kid hacking into my vehicles computer system.

  • I don't know about the others, but I can give a big approval for things like:

    Email - Protonmail(protonmail.com)
    Browser - Tor(torproject.org) and Brave(brave.com)
    Search Engine - Duckduckgo(duckduckgo.com)
    Messaging - Signal(signal.org) and Telegram(telegram.org)

    Also things like PGP

Social media I just straight up mostly ignore.
