Sydney: Used Cars: Where's Best to Buy from?

Hi Sydney peeps

Where do you recommend buying a used wagon from, please?
I'm thinking privately to save on dealer commissions.

Gumtree - Running low on sellers
Ebay - Seems to be majority dealers
Any other sites you recommend?

Are there places where private sellers meet say on weekends to sell their cars or is that not a thing here?

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

Since Covid used cars are going for a premium so it'd be hard to find a bargain now! (Certainly compared to 12-18 months ago.)

Its insane… I bought a used car for 10.5k back in 2018 to use for work
Used for 1 year + in garage for 6 months and expecting it to sell for $7-8k.

Listed it for 12k expecting to be bargained down and sold it for 12k in Sep 2020.

      • Nice one!

Try Pickles and Manheim auctions. Both do fixed price sales and normal auctions. I haven't used them in 10 years but they had both 1-2yo and much older stock available at various price points when I looked last.

    • These look cool too, thank you.

Buying a car now is one way to burn 10-25% of the purchase price immediately.

I'd wait another 3 months, prices are going to correct very soon with jobkeeper and seeker on the way out.
The days of second hand car dealers taking huge profits are numbered.
Cars will always depreciate and people are still trading in cars, now that the china supply chain is back to normal it's just going to catch up.

last i heard car productions volumes weren't meant to catch up until 2022, unless they really start churning them out.

      • Where did you hear that?

Probably from the same guy that says in 3 months it’ll be back to normal. It’s all speculation, ask any 10 experts and get 12 different answers.
