  • i heard it is good- was thinking of trying it myself.

i used those fuel additives from bigw something like this https://www.kmart.com.au/product/wynns-spitfire-injection-cl…

and the engine does idle better

    • Yea I use that but that's different

      • on youtube got some good reviews

It's great. Good at removing carbon.

    • Good for an engine that's been sitting a few years

      • They don't carbon up from sitting, but it definitely can't hurt. Follow the instructions on the can.

scott doesnt think so but didnt watch the whole video he talks random stuff

      Scott is an idiot.

    • John Lennon is looking great for his age

  • Seafoam

    Here you go

It definitely works if your car has build-up , also recommended if you have a Direct Injection Engine. definitely smoothed idle and returned a little fuel economy.

Going forward i would recommend a baffled oil catch can system , 1 for the PCV and 1 for the Crankcase.

    • Isn't it the same thing

      • i just had a look at the Subaru upper engine cleaner and it appears they perform the same task. I have not personally used it however but if you do please let me know how you go.

That seafoam you linked to won't do bugger all for buildup on the intake valve in a direct injection engine. You need an intake air cleaner, not a tank additive for DI.

      • ahhh , thanks for that. i forgot it comes in 2 main versions i thought i had the right one.

HERE is the one i meant to originally link.

But yeah its probably cheaper to buy the subaru upper engine cleaner

There is a bloke on Ebay selling them for $10 a can

a must for any subaru owner … specialist subi garages include it as part of their services…. $20 well spent

    • Thank you

Be prepared for smoke if you do have carbon buildup. A lot of smoke. So much smoke that if you have easily scared and panicky neighbours they will likely call the fire brigade.

Threebond make a similar product that used to cost about 50% of the Subaru stuff and seemed about as good, not that I had anything to really base that on other than smoke.

As @mapax said - expect lots of dark grey smoke ! and do not DIY inside your garage that's for sure.

    • Yes that's how you know it is working

I used it, works well for cars that are daily driven and not driven hard (Italian tune up).

    There are two,
    1. upper engine cleaner, which you spray into the throttle body/inlet manifold, taking off intercooler.
    2. Fuel additive injector cleaner.

I once I changed to BP ultimate from shell, I noticed much less smoke coming out of the exhaust after using upper engine cleaner.

Highly recommended for a turbo Suby.

    • So can you confirm that I do indeed need to drive my 06 lumbering heap of Outback like a small italian sportscar in order for it to get a tune up?

Haven't used the upper engine clean at service before but I will next time round I think.

Can only really comment on turbo EJ motors, (port injected). Good 20min run helps them run so much better by buring carbon deposits.

06, electronic throttle assembly on Imprezas, not sure if outback got those in 06. If cable tighten throttle cables, will have slack at this age.

Forgot to say, do the upper engine clean before an oil change and not after.

        • Great advice mate thanks.

  • Get the Liqui-Moly one. It smokes wayyyy harder than the Subi one says my Subi tech. He was impressed when I asked him to use that instead of SA459.

(fun fact: the genuine Subaru one is actually made by Bar's Leaks - http://www.barsleaks.com.au/product/subaru-upper-engine-clea…)

    • Learned something today.

Also subaru injector cleaner same used by Ford apparently.

      • Used by all kinds
