Is It OK to Put Your Poo Bag into a Household Bin on The Street

So we often walk our dog at night time.

If he does a poo, we'd pick it up using a bag, tight it, and throw the bag into the bin at the park or our own (red) bin.

One night every week, we will see the bins out on the kerb side on our walk.

So the wife and I were debating if it's OK to put the Poo Bag into someone else's bin.

All the bins will be emptied by the council trucks the following morning.

Where does the OBZ community stand on this?

I've seen this posted several times on community FB pages. Put it in a neighbours bin if you're >1km from home, just make sure you tie the bag up. I'd rather someone put it in my bin rather than leaving it on the path/grass or having to hold onto it for 15 minutes.

Those who say no, please think about your community. A little smell when you open the lid (providing they don't throw the bag hard and untied, it's unlikely to break) is not that bad.. Better having dog walkers comfortable and not leaving dog poo everywhere. More walkers in the community, the better (general health, security, hospitality).

Edit: I should say, my dog won't do the deed in public but I'm not concerned if a neighbour put it in my bin. Above is my opinion about my bins, not me dumping in others.

    • +3

my dog is the EXACT opposite LOL. refuses to do a poo at home and will only do it on a walk. saying that, her walk is past a public bin on purpose so I just dispose it there - never in a neighbours bin. Its bad enough when I carry it home (shes done the deed past the council bin), Im paranoid it will split open in my bin, let alone a neighbours!

      • Try disposable nappy bags. They are very hard to break and are scented so if you tie it air tight (and you can with most) it is not inconvenience to carry home or to a public bin.

    • +1

Put it in a neighbours bin if you're >1km from home

1 km away are not neighbours.

    • +2

What about the other 6 nights of the week when the bins aren’t streetside? Have to carry it home then.

    • For me it's fine if you tie the bag AND the bin is on the curb to be emptied. Don't put your dog poop in a bin on the curb that has been emptied already cause it will sit in there for a week. I occasionally look in the dog poop bins along the park footpaths when chucking in a collected poop and it amazes how many bags aren't tied. It's no wonder those bins stink to high heaven in the height of summer. Spare a thought for the poor bastard from the council who's job it is to empty those bins having to deal with the stench.

  • +4

ask the city council. the bins belong to them.

  • +14

    No way.
It’s like putting your kids poo nappy into someone else’s bin. So rude.
This is why I don’t put my bins out until the last minute anymore. So sick of people filling up my bins with their crap and it spilling out on the road as a result.

    • +11

2 summers ago we had this debate, parked on side of the road on a warm day about to head to a family gathering and low and behold1yo had just done a crazy one.
Not a chance it’s staying in the car on a 30deg day, not a chance we are rocking up to the house holding this stink grenade, and, given the heat decided it was too much to put it in someone’s bin on the street.
      So what did we do?!?
“Babe, I know, double bag it and put it on top of the driver front tyre so we will see it when we come back but the car won’t stink” seemed like such a good idea.
That’s right, but instead of remembering or seeing it we sure as ‘sh!t’ drove off and squashed it outside on the street. Remembered a good 4 hours later what we’d done, by which time it was midnight.
Drove back the next morning expecting to pick up the pancake with intent to recover and dispose of the unit however it was gone, and there was no remnants I could see on the tyre. Always felt bad about it, as suspect it had to get picked up by someone (or a bird/animal?) or gradually bits came off if it was stuck to our car/tyre while we drove on the freeway back home..

Tldr: lack of sleep leads to bad choices

      • +2

I recall a roadtrip between Syd/Mel in the middle of the night, when I was a teenager and my little niece had done one…. Nappy was placed in sealed plastic bag but not airtight unfortunately.

Every 15-30 mins there was an "accidental" kicking of the bag which would let off the horrendous odour. Suffice to say after the third kick and telling off people stretching their legs, the maccas/servo bin had a nasty package.

        • +2

I was a teenager dude and traveling with cousins family. Wasn't me who did it but thanks for the neg.

      • +1

Couldn’t you put it in a public bin on the way to your friends house? I’ve done this a hundred times before.

        • Ah realize this is reply to above, completely agree!!

      • Not a chance it’s staying in the car on a 30deg day, not a chance we are rocking up to the house holding this stink grenade,

Seriously what kind of friend do you have? THat they would get offended if you had to dispose of baby nappies in their bin?

  • +9

Next question is "Should you attempt to pick up liquid dog shit off the pavement?"

    • +1

Hamish and Andy Podcast right there hahaha

    • Or how about picking up the poop when your dog does it in the ocean and there are families about?

  • +2

    no

you would be correctly thought of as being too precious to use your own bin
smell of poo lingers in the bin also

  • +26

For sure you can. It's tied in a bag and you're putting it in a garbage bin on the street. I can't believe people are actually getting angry about the idea of someone using their bin when it's out ready to be collected.

    • +1

      Should be an opt-in system.

    • -2

      bunch of snowflakes

      • +7

Isn't it more snowflake to be incapable of holding the dog poo till you get home? Much trauma.

        • +1

Fair enough. I prefer not to own a dog anyway so perhaps I should zip it ;)

          • +1

I don't have to take the shrimp for walkies so thats pretty cool, and they don't bark much either so the neighbours are happy 😅

                  • +1

                    @bataleon: OH NICE so bootiful
                    they are tiny!
do you eat them when they get big🌚🌚

                    • +2

@capslock janitor: Thank you 🙂 hahah, a bit of garlic butter and we're good to go!! We'll probably need to get some Maccas afterwards though.

                  • @bataleon: Damn, that's really really nicely done. I'm actually thinking of getting some CRS and adding them to my school of Mountain clouds. I love the moss thing you have with the wood.

                    • +2

@tebbybabes: Thanks mate. I started the moss via the blender method. It all started from a 50c sized ball of Fissidens and Riccarida. Kinda crazy to think about it, but it worked. It's been low-tech the whole time, running my AI Prime at only 10% for 4 hours a day. Patience is key.

I've thought about getting some CRS. They'd make a nice change from the RCS I've got. I feel that I've had enough experience to dial in their water parameters - I've been using re-mineralised RO water since I started the hobby. I've got an Alien Betta in there too. He does a good job of keeping the population in check.

    • yeah i live in an area with lots of dogs, i was a bit annoyed at first but sorta got over it as I would like to do the same if i had the dog. literally doesn't cost anybody anything and it incentivises people to actually do the right thing and pickup the poop in the first place. we're all living on this planet together, chill.

  • +3

If you get the bin owner's permission.

  • +2

What if it's Nancy Pelosi's driveway?

    • That would be from Donald and/or supporters, not a dog. Given Donald's diet, it would be a lot worse than any canine.

    • Why do you focus on a US politician, we have plenty of underperforming ones here.
Tell us, would you say the same for Mitch McConnell?

  • +11

I'd rather dog walkers put a tied bag of their dog's offerings in my garbage bin, than leave said offering on the grassy verge, in front of my house, any day.

    • +9

What about the third option of them putting it in their own bin?

  • +4

We had someone open our gate and put it in our bin then keep walking. I was on the balcony above but was so shocked I didn't say anything.

We have two giant poo machines and I would never dream of putting it in someone else's bin…

    • +3

Open your gate as in, came onto your property just to put it in? I would have been spewing >:(

  • +2

Brown paper bag, light it up, ring the bell and runnnnnnnnn

    lol

    • +1

Make sure the owner stamps on it too!

  • +6

When I was out walking my dogs this thought cross my mind and I figured hmm its in a bag the bin is getting collected tomorrow its not a big deal, but then I thought how would I feel if someone opened up my bin on the street and chucked their dogshit in?

I decided yeh nah best to carry it until I got home to wack it in my own bin…

  • +4

    Not your bin. Not okay.

    • +1

      how good is cricket?

  • +6

I have a warehouse in a nasty part of town, if I leave my bin out too long junkies throw used syringes in it. Dog poo in a sealed bag would almost be a pleasant surprise.

  • -6

Do all the "Never OK's" have their wheelie bin sitting next to them in the lounge room?! FFS.

  • +1

It's never OK to be caught doing this.

  • +1

This happened to me last week, the day after bins were collected. That is not ok as it’s not my dog and I wasn’t going to leave it there for a week to stink up my bin. Had to drop it in a council bin.
Had they done it when my bin was out I’d be ok with that cause it wouldn’t spend 7 days festering.

  • +1

I don’t understand the problem? Thankfully the majority of my neighbours are reasonable people and don’t mind if someone needs to dispose of a dog bag or too.
It is also not unusual to get a group message the night before bin collection asking who has room for some more rubbish.

    • +4

You have group chats with your neighbours?

      • +1

        Yes

    • +1

We place our bins right next to the waist height fence. We fill up the bins which ever that's empty. Works quite well when we had kids with nappies. Good neighbors are best.

  • +1

There are government and council guidelines on poopsie. It is hazardous bio waste and should never be disposed of in a regular waste bin. You should be washing or wiping as much of it as you can into a toilet and flushing that brown beauty down

  • +5

If the bin is made for public use then it should be accessible permanently. The trash collection is also a part of council fee. Some people pay more for a bigger bin. So it is unacceptable to dump anything into a neighbors bin without permission.

    • unacceptable

when I'm drinking a soda can along the way I chuck it in their recycling

      • +2

That's not dumping that's recycling hence perfectly acceptable in my double standard opinion.

      • In NSW, SA (others?) you get $ at collection depots, don’t waste that chance, this is OzB after all. :)

  • +1

I would rather them dispose it in my bin then just leave it on the ground.

    • +2

Wouldn't you rather they leave it on the ground than catapulting it onto your roof?

      • +1

Man I hate litterers, esp ones who chuck it out their car window like wtf

      • what?

    • That would be okay. However, if I was a dog owner I would still take it with me, and throw it in my bin when I get home. Just for double measures.

    • Wouldnt you rather them catapult it to your roof than wait till you come outside and fling it to your face?

  • +8

They will literally never notice lol. So many uptight people in this thread. Just do it.

    • +2

This argument came up on reddit and I've honestly never understood it. Going onto their property to use their bin or reaching over a fence or anything - big no-no. But if it's on the street to be collected I don't see the issue at all. I highly doubt anybody would notice so long as you tie it properly.

  • -3

Remember bins are owned by Council - only on loan to a resident.
If bin outside property then it is considered available to the public
hence all the bin stuffers after dark.

Poo in a bag is OK if on street.

NEVER into an emptied bin or a green bin.

We are about to receive a new bin which will take all poo and food eg milk and bread

    • +8

If bin outside property then it is considered available to the public

That is absolutely false. I had neighbours placing their refuse in my bin (while it was out on the street the night before collection), and a complaint to council was taken seriously and resulted in said neighbours receiving a knock on the door from council within 24 hours. I've never had a swifter response from council.

hence all the bin stuffers after dark.

"after dark" because they don't want to risk being caught doing something dodgy in the daylight.

      • so your neighbour wasn't connected to your council then….

  • +23

No idea what this lady had against us, but she would always put her dog poo in our bin, every Thursday when it was out and she eventually begun to walk up our driveway to put it in. One time she waited for the rubbish truck to empty it, then put the poo in.

Things went downhill when she just picked poo up in a tissue and tossed it in the bin. We also came home after 4 weeks away to find the bin stinking and full of crap, she didn't even put it out on Thursdays for us.

I asked her to stop, she said no. I asked if she would mind if I put our dogs poo in her bin, she said she wouldn't mind and carried on putting poo in our bin. I called her bluff and followed her home one day with two large buckets of poo which I saved up over a three week period and dumped it in her bin.

Suffice to say, no more lady putting poo in our bin.

    • +3

Are you sure that wasn't your poo, stinkydog?

    • +1

I think you might be my kindred spirit.

    • +3

That has to be a mental illness surely. I cannot think of any legitimate reason she would put her dog poo in your bin unless she was wronged by somebody and she thought that somebody was you.

    • +3

Well done. It's that mentality of doing things without consequence. (Same goes to internet bullies/trolls). She knew you didn't know her address but after your retribution, knew not to… What's worse though is that she probably dumps it someone else's bins now.

    • +1

Well done mate, hate people like this!!

  • +3

It's like doing a quick pee in the bushes, it's ok as long as no one sees you.

  • OP , i would rather you put your poo-bag into my bin then have myself step or fall on a random poo.

Hell if you really want to i'd even let you do a poo in my pin if you were that desperate , better then on my doorstep.

Everyone knows rubbish bin's stink , and anyone unless you can smell it from more then 20 meters away you should not be wasting precious water to "clean it"

    Harden up people.

    • +3

You've never cleaned your bin, ever?

      • +1

Look at his username… He probably doesn't believe in showers either.

      • +3

I've never cleaned the council bin, only my kitchen bin :)

        • Wouldn't it smell bad from time to time and you bring that smell to your home if you don't wash it? I wouldn't want to walk out to the backyard and smell my bins, knowing they would smell forever because they will never be washed.

          • +3

@Guybrush57: It's left outside in the yard in a deserted corner and the lid is shut so I don't smell anything unless when I open it to throw things. Washing it is too messy with water from the hose into the bin splashing back onto my body, or when I tip the water out from the bin I get it onto myself.

      • +3

In 25 years I have "never" cleaned or hosed out my bin. We do however use bags in the house which get tossed into it so never raw food straight in. Bin still looks good and never smells!

  • -3

Just throw in the bush i do, compost.

  • +13

If people can't clean up after their dog and take the poo home then they shouldn't be a pet owner.

  • +6

If you have a dog you should be prepared for it to poo and then to pick it up in a bag and carry it with you back home to dispose of. It's your responsibility, not anybody else's and comes part and parcel with ownership of a canine. Nor should you use someone else's bins to dispose it into.
I have extra bins and I actually pay the council for that right. I, if asked by somebody, would actually allow it but not from random people (same goes for dumping rubbish).
My opinion ofcourse and you're welcome to disagree.

  • +1

we do it all the time. It's still several levels better than those that don't clean up or throw the bag into a public spot

  • Of course is ok. It is just another bin.

  • +1

Unless they ask for permission, doesn't matter if it just orange seed let alone dog poo. The bin is not yours.

  • +3

I happily leave my bin down the bottom of my driveway so that people out walking their dogs can drop it in there.I'd like to encourage the ones that actually go to the effort of picking up after their dogs by masking it easier to do so.

  • +8

Honestly surprised at the responses here. Bins are for refuse. And they tend to stink, even if you use bags and tie them up. People threatening violence (throwing the bag at someone) are off their tree. I get that it's not a nice feeling to have someone else use your property without permission but if you get that stressed over what's in your bin when it's being collected the next morning, I reckon you're going to be wasting a lot of money on blood pressure medication.

  • +7

I'm ok with people using my bin as long as it's not overflowing out. Rather surprised at the responses. The bin is stinky anyway and stays outdoors and the lid remains shut - I don't smell anything unless I open it to dump things. My own kitchen scraps would ferment in it and make it smell anyway, I don't mind bagged dog poos being added. Won't make much difference.

  • I vote no. What if i come out and put something on top of that shit bag later on. Then when it's emptied the shit bag is compromised and smears all down the inside of my bin. That's nasty and it's your animal, so carry it home and put it in your own bin.

  • Am I the only one after reading the title think of Borat

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSpWpPJbRy4

  • -2

To all the Cynophilist out there, just a random question: if you could let your dog sleep/play on your bed, can do potty train, why couldn't you train your dog to shit in a spot in your house/yard? Take care of those chores before leaving for a walk? Why do you have to take the dog out and let it shits on the street?

I don't see any parent would take the kids out for a walk then let them do it on the street, why would dogs get some special treatment?

    • +1

You are obviously not a dog owner. Dogs like to take a crap when out and about. In fact might have a few for the enjoyment factor.

  • +2

Feel free to put in my bin any time you want.

  • +1

If it's the night before the bins are getting collected and the bag is tightly sealed, there's no issue. But don't go down somebody's driveway to put it in their bin any other day of the week.
