23-Jan-2021 6:00pM AEDT Update at Microsoft

UPDATED on 1/22/2021 at 8:52 PM PT]

We messed up today and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.

We’re turning this moment into an opportunity to bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience. For free-to-play games, you will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months.

If you are an Xbox Live Gold member already, you stay at your current price for renewal. New and existing members can continue to enjoy Xbox Live Gold for the same prices they pay today. In the US, $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for retail 12-months.

Thank you.

Bloody hell. This shouldn't affect me since I have Game Pass Ultimate but for anyone who just wants Gold, this is a massive price increase.

  • Damn in 2 something years when my gamepass with ultimate runs out, I guess I'll have to pay retail. By then the new Elder Scrolls game will be out and a bunch of others I'll want to keep playing. Might win the lotto by then anyway..

So $14 for a month of Gold, but isn't a month of Ultimate only $15 right now? Just how much is Ultimate going to cost per month by 2023.

I have a feeling once Microsoft has everyone subscribed to GP Ultimate that they will extort us all. Might have to rotate between GP and the music/video streaming services each month to save money. It is all getting too expensive already.

yeah i think this is a ploy to get more onto Games Pass… its only $1-$2 more … etc

  • Jeeeez

  • Cash is on πŸ”₯. More price increases will come from other services providers in 2021.

  • They're purposely pushing XBL to the point of obsolete, so that game pass/GPU is adopted. They're spending the goodwill they've attained over the last 6-7 years. We're back to 2013 MS.

  • Woah, RDX podcast where saying might go free… ah well I hope they pump up quality of games and would be a win for those already on gamepass ultimate πŸ‘

    • Thank goodness free-to-play games no longer require a Gold subscription.

Can finally play Fortnite without worrying too much!

People who were looking at Game Pass Ultimate but haven't done so yet, should really get on this:

I've just spent ~$150 for 38 months of Game Pass Ultimate using Brazilian VPN (3 12 months codes + current deal).

I tried warning y'all that MS could pull the plug on the way to do that offer at any time.

  • The other thread mentions that Microsoft have backpedalled on the price rise already.

    • I've had lunches that lasted longer than this price hike.

    • Yeah I see that :)

  • Marketing gimmick
