Router Upgrade or Buy Antennas?

Sooo my lovely kiddos decided to attack the router (DSL-AC68U and the router is about 5 years old and had been working fine)

It's now missing two of its three 5ghz antenna.

I live in 2 storey rental. I had the occasional reception issue on the ceiling of the second storey - lifx lights dropping out. Otherwise all ok.

What should I do?

Buy new antennas to replace the old from Amazon or Ebay or whatever

Upgrade the router to something fancy, if so, what?

Buy cheap second hand random router and use its antennas?

  • Did the LIFX lights dropout when the Asus had all it's antennas?

    • Yes but lifx only does 2.4 and the external antennas are for 5ghz. The 2.4 antennas are internal

Purchase a mesh router kit. It might fix your LIFX dropouts and no external antennas to break :-)

We might move home next year. That's when I'm ok to upgrade to wifi6 and mesh.

But for now, I guess Amazon antennas or the like are the go

        • Mr/Mrs neg must enjoy dropouts.

Keep the modem router, get some antenna's online like these: https://www.amazon.com.au/TECHTOO-Antenna-Connector-Wireless…

And if you're having reception issues in parts of your house, look at extending your wifi using Asus' AiMesh by adding compatible nodes.

  • Buy more antennas. My wife quietly broke them on ours and wifi coverage went to shit.

  • Just about any new quality router would be better than a 5yo unit. But you get what you pay for, consider the value write-off for the old guy and get the best that you can afford.

Does your ISP have any discounted "locked" units?

See, that's what I thought - yet .. this router is still for sale so . it's not crap yet.

My ISP gives no routers. Plus, i'd never get a locked anything.
