Where is the battle front to quality as a Frontline worker?

  • +1

I have noticed at a couple of Bakers Delights sites (e.g. Greenwood Plaza, Metcentre), that they tip their excess stock into the dumpster at the end of the day instead of flogging it off at a discount.

I suppose doing this is an improvement, but they really should not get away with wrapping themselves up in virtue signalling over the whole thing.

    • +1

They Should do at least half price when it is nearly closing time

      • +1

Then people wait until the end of the day and buy everything at half price. Their strategy (as unethical as it might be) seems to work for them, which is why they're probably one of the biggest 'bakeries' in Australia.

        • why don't the workers take them home, I thought they used to.

          • @domo653q: A lot of the time companies forbid employees from doing this as it leads to people making extra of things just so there will be some left over to take home. Also if you get sick from eating something you took home they are possibly liable for it.

        • A lot of places work out an arrangement where someone buys all the end of day stock in bulk. I knew someone who used to buy garbage bags full from Bakers Delight and take it to their property and feed it to their cattle (who knew cattle like bread). She used to take some of the good stuff in to the office to share with colleagues. There’s also places that give it to food banks etc. My local salvos store has free bread donated by woolies that they give to anyone who wants it.

          • @morse: I think whoever takes the excess from our local bakers delight has livestock. They just throw it all in a bin that obviously isn't for human consumption.

Curious as to how you know this. Did you go to each of the store, wait at the back of their store for the evening and observe it ?

      • You literally only have to be walking by at the right time. It's quite open and shameless.

        • Why would they try to hide disposing of their property? It’s theirs, they can do what they like with it.

In times past, it probably would of been giving to charity. But now I’m sure there’s some insurance BS if someone gets food poisoning or chokes on the free bread.

@PainToad: Nah, there's 'Food rescue' organisations like Oz Harvest that works with companies doing this exact thing.

            • @Oldmate88: Yep, I work with Vinnies to distribute OzHarvest hauls. We get so many bakery products from supermarkets but never seen any Bakers Delight.

          • +1

@PainToad: You should read about European laws about food wastage. This county is third world af in saving the environment

            • @life is suffering:

You should read about European laws about food wastage.

I try to avoid reading anything about the EU.

This county is third world af in saving the environment

              ¯_(ツ)_/¯ meh

I'd more concerned about the food being wasted that could be feeding the hungry.

          • @PainToad: They can do what they like with their property, and I can do what I like with my cash. Just don't expect me to congratulate them over a few cynical freebies.

          • @PainToad: Many stores will give it to charity if requested by the charity.

    • Last week I walked past a Baker's Delight at closing, and they had 5 trolley full of breads in garbage bag.

      • What a wate

      • Why not donated to the homeless people?

      • +1

I'm guessing you missed the bit where the guy comes and loads those garbage bags into his van as opposed to hurling them into the garbage.

    • They should use OzHarvest!

    • From what I read on blogs, Bakers Delight must have a certain amount of stock available at closing time, so that whenever a customer goes in, they never have to worry that the store has run out of an item, be it at 7am or 7pm… Otherwise customers avoid shopping in the afternoon as they know the bakery won't have stock…

My local BD donates the entire of their remaining stock to various farmers so it doesn't go to waste. However, I guess local stores serve their community interests depending on demand, so I would imagine food recycling donations are made to kitchens, etc…

  • I think it's a crime that they sell hot cross bun in Jan !

    • I love hot cross buns, wish they sold them all year round.

The ones in the supermarkets are a bit average but since they start selling them right after boxing day, it is my go to until my favourite ones at my local cafe are released.

    • Totally agree, should put circles or something else. Leave the cross until Easter time.

  • +4

What an absolute crock, who’s really going to front up for a 50c bun

Do something meaningful Bakers Delight and make a donation to a hospital or charity

    • +2

Wait. It’s one bun. Lol I assumed it was a 6 pack. Not worth their effort.

  • European countries have laws in place for wastage. This is one institution wonder what happens in others. Total waste

  • How many people will turn up in lab coats and stethoscopes hanging around their necks? For a free hot cross bun? Hmmm. Nope - I didn't think so either.

  • +2

They should deliver it to frontline workers, not make them goto the store… they are frontline for a reason.

    Marketing/Gimmick than a "good" deed.

    • +1

One bun? Should deliver a box of 12 buns per frontline worker. The petrol and time cost more than $1.70.

  • Full T&Cs are available in bakery. I have to drive all the way there to read this and see if eligible. Have they not heard of the internet?
