  • What's the kit number? Will check it out

      The set number is 60178.

  • Your link ain't working, and it can't be found online

  • Wow. 78 pieces.

I mean.. the number of pieces isn't important in a kit for the little ones. But this set even looks like a super massive ripoff. Rrp should have been $20.

A true collector probably wouldn’t argue but I’m in agreeance with you.

Maybe it’s just me but it seems like LEGO is making a swing back towards more & more specialised (and expensive) sets with lots of unique bricks again. This is despite their big song & dance a few years ago about them “losing the original vision” and “getting back to basics”. I guess the big letdown for me was over Christmas when I saw a completed Millennium Falcon set in a toy shop. It looked really cool and was probably fun to build, but it struck me that it still looked like a LEGO set that was overpriced at $1200 RRP. Obviously my expectations were skewed but I honestly didn’t see the value in it any more, even at the bargain prices seen here.

(Well, that post turned out to be way more than I’d intended, but there it is…)

As the world's largest toy company, they obviously try to appeal to as many customers as possible.

As such, Lego sell many basic (Creator) sets with nothing but lots of colourful bricks and other basic pieces.

What exactly was your complaint about the Millennium Falcon? If it's the $1200 price tag, then yeah, it's too rich for my blood too.

However, if you're going to complain that it still looks like a Lego set, then you probably also shouldn't complain about sets with lots of unique bricks.

Yeah, it came across as a complaint whereas I really wanted it to be more of an observation that LEGO seem to be straying from The Original Vision again. Yes, there are basic sets still available, and if you're really into building new things from scratch then you'll be buying plain bricks by the Kg and not complete sets like these. I just find when I walk into a retailer or bring up a web site online, though, I'm struck by how the special sets seem to get all the promotion and you need to look way in the back to find the basic ones. LEGO is meant to all about using your imagination, but with the specials someone has already done the imagining for you in advance…and charging you a commensurate price for the privilege.

As for the high prices there's no sense railing against them because it's now a 'premium brand' and true fans are quite prepared to pay for it. (I mean, I use Apple gear so I can't really complain about that, can I? Pots & kettles calling eachother 'black' and all that…) Maybe I'm turning into a Cranky Old Fart who can be safely ignored, but I'm not seeing the same perceived value in LEGO any more. Other people still do, and they're quite entitled to do so. As always, YMMV.

    • Considering that the actual retail price for this set is $15.99, I don’t understand how you could say that this is a ripoff and then say that the price should have been $4 more

Yeah, I think the OP's comment that he saw this set on eBay priced at $35 has skewed this conversation.
This is a retired product, and so anyone selling the few new, unopened sets that remain are marking the product up by whatever they like.
But I seem to remember this being normally priced about $10-$12 in Big W / Kmart a couple of years ago.
Brickhawk says BigW sold them off at $5, clearance price.

I suspect the store you saw them at had found half a box behind a shelf in the warehouse, and as Target had long thought the product was out of stock, there isn't a clearance price in the system.

This is a bargain only in the sense that you likely won't find this set anywhere at its original price or less.

        • I had checked the sold listings on eBay. People are paying $35 for it.

          • @Bennybricks: Fair enough. I see you also acknowledged the original RRP was $16.

      • Yeah i thought it was $35. $16 is good.

  • Just did a quick check, seems sold out everywhere…

    • Good to know. No offence but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are actually sold out. I have found the ‘find in store’ function for Target, Big W, and Kmart to be very unreliable.
