    Once they get up to temp they are quite quick to read

  There is plenty of cheap ones on aliexpress

  Interesting there is ones now with a plug in external probe , perfect for the oven or bbq without having to open the door/lid

      I've got a cheap one of these, and it's very useful. Some thoughts:
      * get a two-probe unit - you can track different parts of your cook
      * get spare probes - when the braided cable accidentally rests against something hot like a wire rack in the oven, they will die
