Balcony Drip Irrigation - Suggestions

Hello folks,

so I have 12-13 pots of flowering plants & herbs in my balcony, however I don't have access to a tap. I looked into setting up a drip irrigation for them.

I tried setting up a elevated reservoir and let gravity do it's thing, but there wasn't sufficient pressure. I couldn't increase the height further.

I was considering setting up a 5v motor on a timer but was a bit hesitant since reaching a power source was a little tricky and wasn't too keen on going the solar route.

From what I saw the water pressure was the problem. However if I can get a reservoir which can be pumped manually then I believe it might be sufficient. I came across this. Would this work if I attach my drip irrigation tube to this?

Or is there a better way of doing this? I am not looking to spend too much on this. I already have the tubes and drippers.

  • I think you need this Garedena Aqua Bloom

    • Sorry OP but the pressure sprayer you linked is not going to work how you think.

On your drippers, if you bought the brown/creme coloured stuff from Bunnings, it is usually made to only drip with a certain minimum pressure and designed to shut off if that is not met in order to prevent back flow.

You might be able to still use your gravity fed system by getting some poly or garden hose and poking holes in it with pins or similar, they’ll be small enough to drip slowly over the day. But it will still need topping up (which to me defeats the purpose of having automatic irrigation) Also make sure that your water tank you’ve made has a breather hole so that there is no vacuum created, which could also be stopping flow.

    • Pretty neat but unfortunately it is a bit over my budget. I am looking for DIY solutions rather than a well packaged one.

edit: This was in reply to the Sloar watering kit

  • You need a tank, you need a pump you need a timer. Job done!

    • looks like that is what am gonna end up with

  • Can you change the drip bits of your irrigation system with weeper hose bits. That might work.
