It's OzB favorite bargain phone though?

  • +3

Great phone. Hasn't skipped a beat

  • Still kicking myself I missed the $200 deal for the phone at JB a little while ago.

    • +2

I think you're referring to this post I made. Just to let you know that was a pricing error that got fixed within 30 mins and only few honoured if that makes you feel better :)

  • +5

simply the best in under $300 phones

    • +6

      Better than all the rest

    • +9

is it really better than, for example, the Redmi Note 9 Pro that was posted yesterday? Genuinely asking as i have only owned Xiaomis recently and found them brilliant, i am in the market for a phone about this price so keen to hear feedback about it, thanks in advance : ).

      • +4

The Oppo A52 is a budget champ only when comparing locally sourced phones. When you compare it with the Redmi Note 9S or Pro from the grey market Oppo fades into the distance.
Recently got a 6/128 RN9S from BG for the same price as the Oppo shown here.

        • +1

Was the ~$227 AUD 6/128 Redmi Note 9S deal posted on OzBargain?

          • +3

@peterpeterpumpkin: No. It was one of their flash deals I stumbled on late one night back in late December. By the time I bought mine then the Mrs decided she wanted one too it was late. I went to post the deal next morning but it was over.
On Kimovil the pricing history graph for the 6/128 variant shows it did hit $169us /$225au plus delivery at that time.
Crazy good phone for the money.
When looking around the BG site always have a look in their specials listings as often there are short term hot deals in there that don't appear in the main listing.
May help to add a particular phone to your wish list on their site as well.

            • +2

@Cheeper: Worth checking GearBest as well, i've found some pretty great deals on there.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: I have always wondered if Gear Best and Bang Good were the same company?
They have the same presentation style and the initials… GB/BG ?
                I just had a look on the GB site for a RN9S 6/128 ($265 + GST $30 + Delivery $16.) Total $311.
BG have no stock at the moment but their price is usually $270 and that price includes GST .."if"… you access their site via the au.banggood.com link or by using their app. Shipping is also a lot cheaper but for some reason BG only offer the basic shipping option but it is cheap at around $4. So with this one example BG wins by about $30.
GB used to be more competitive… or has BG become cheaper?
I bought my first Xiaomi (4X) from GB.

Whatever happened to Samsung A20? Wasnt that the best budget phone?

      • Exynos vs Snapdragon? And older than this too.

      • The Samsung A range has some of the best mid tier phones ($300-$500 bracket) but most of their budget offerings fall flat.

      • older phone so its discontinued.

  • +13

Bought 2 from JB when it was $199. Sons are very happy with them.

    • +5

You must have some respectful and understanding kids.

Most kids over 12 would chuck a hissy fit if you bought them this over an iPhone.

      • +40

Yes, they are very good kids. They are very sensible. I am lucky. Thanks!

        • +18

You're selling yourself short. You have done well bringing them up…

          • +3

            @x d:

            You're selling yourself short.

And still handling it better than Melvin Captial… 🚀🚀🚀🌙

        • +1

any tips for me raising kids?

      • +3

Not sure why you're being downvoted so hard

      • +5

This is sadly the truth. I wouldn't say it's the majority though.
I don't know if that's just the way kids are getting raised or if Apple just brainwashes from an early age.

        • +2

Peer pressure, having the price tag hanging from the phone, etc. Just how most are these days.

          • +1

@Cheeper: Yeah that's true, but how has Apple gained this reputation? Is it just the fact it's expensive and therefore must be better?
I guess with things like animoji/memoji it's targeting young kids that will get a kick out of that.

          • @Cheeper: It's always been like this and always will be.

Back when i was in school in the 90's it was having Billabong/Ripcurl etc clothes.

            Now it's iPhones.

        • It's the group chat imo - all my daughter's friends have iphones so are in a group chat together. She is on android so they text her but not the same as being part of it. Now that she's older she's started messaging on instagram but that exclusive group chat is one random reason iphones are cool for kids.

          • @Helenn: Consider me out of the loop, but I didn't realise kids actually texted each other? Most times it seems to be a social media (from 13, which tbh getting a new iPhone for someone below that is probably not wise).

Although, I guess that's why the iPod Touch was such a big hit. Could iMessage, same size as a phone and didn't cost the Earth.

      • +2

If they do they can have the oppo once they apologise and get a job to buy their own iphone. My dad would have seriously let me have it for behaving in that kind of way after being given a gift.

        • +1

The word entitled has superceded the word earn these days.

      • +1

        I'm 13 and happy with a mi 9t, pls don't stereotype 😭

  • +3

    No-brainer at this price point.

  • Want to get this for a kid, and he plays a lot of Fortnite (yes I know, cliche) and CoD Mobile, is this good enough for that?

    • +2

I used to play genshin impact on one of these and it was very laggy.

Not sure how the other two games go but they're all just as 3D intensive I believe.

EDIT: Just found this. Looks like cod mobile does run pretty well on it, fortnite should be the same, maybe genshin is just not optimised too well.

    • How much are you wanting to spend? You'd get a better experience on a higher end phone.
These are good specs and the games should be relatively playable. Value wise, you can't go wrong. You'll need to upgrade quicker as well though.

    • +2

My son said CoD runs fine.
He doesn't play Fortnite so can't comment on that.

  • +3

My old phone was a 2016 Oppo F1s, with 32gb which was enough, but the battery was almost dead.
My new wishlist was… NFC, long battery life, 4K video, microSD slot, and a phone that will receive the Android 11 update.
This one ticked all the boxes!

    • +6

Talk about a good run from 250 dollar phone .
That put Oppo on the map.
Had one rip little fella sadly met his end inside a maccas coke

    • +1

I too have the F1S. It's no longer my primary phone but I still use it for games. Battery life is much better when it doesn't have a sim card in it.

  • Anyone have this unlocked and working with vowifi/wifi calling on Telstra/Boost?

True. I dont know if for $2 it is worth supporting a multi-billionaire - soon to be trillionaire - who has not only built his wealth upon slavery-like exploitation of employees, but has instituted a race to the bottom in extorting various States to allow him tax-free (or near tax-free) status or he will build his warehouses elsewhere, meaning they would miss out on his (shit-kicking jobs). That and the fact his wealth has accelerated insanely during the pandemic, during which he continued to exploit workers the usual way as well as placing them in danger and not taking any of their concerns seriously, as well as sacking any employee who voiced any concerns. That's not to mention it was one monolithic company, more powerful than most countries now, that has crushed the existence of any other business in the field. So, yeah, if all that is worth your $2, knock yourself out.

        • +1

Well, that is some nice whataboutery. The comparison here is Amazon or Officeworks or JB-Hi Fi. That's it.

Not to mention, Amazon is certainly in a category of its own, despite the undisputed vices of the abovementioned.

          • -3

@Iggemo: Well you mentioned slavery like conditions so I just posted companies who are the real deal in the slavery World.
I wasn't aware of what you mentioned about Officeworks

            • @Bargainbattles: I appreciate a lot of companies are scum of the earth. But here we are talking about - as per my comment - is buying from Amazon worth saving $2 compared to buying from OW or JB. I didn't notice OW or JB on your list, fwiw : ).

        • That's some impressive homework.

      • +4

By posting that Amazon is $2 cheaper, you are now able to price beat at Officeworks and get it for an additional 5% off bringing it down to $213.75. Don't jump to conclusions.

        https://www.officeworks.com.au/information/policies/price-be…

  • Doesn’t work with MDM

  • Would this been an upgrade from an iPhone 8?

    • +4

      Comparing apples with oranges.
But since you asked, I'll bite.

Changed from an iPhone 7, due to being sick of the ecosystem and restrictions (such as no expandable storage and no headphone jack).
Only main thing I miss is the camera's speed - takes longer to load on the A52, but not enough to be a deal breaker.

So yes, it's a worthy upgrade from a 7 (at least).

    • +1

I've got both. Don't expect the same smoothness. More capable but slower in execution than ip8.

    • No

  • +1
    • this doesnt have 6gb RAM like the one in that comparison either

  • +7

    https://www.catch.com.au/search?query=oppo+a52&search_src=to…

UNiDAYS 10% off + Discounted Gift Cards 15% off (currently at Coles) will bring the price to roughly $175-$180

    • +1

Bingo….. $175 for A52 via Catch is the way to go.

      • +2

Actually Catch listing for A52 is a marketplace listing via mobiciti, so unidays 10% discount won't work. Previously it has been possible to buy direct from Catch.
Would still I assume be able to use gift card discount of 15% via Coles. So $191, which is still good.

  • +1

Purchased this a few months ago after the rave reviews. To be honest quite disappointed. The specs seem good however something with the OS tends to make this phone pretty laggy.

Decent for the price I guess..

    • I bought one after seeing the feedback on Ozbargain as well. Does the job but just slow with everything

    • I thought the camera was awful. Couldn't find a GCam that worked.

  • +1
  • Ive bought about 8 of these for the Biz and kids last 6 months.
Always get TGG to price match Officeworks.
I assume they will get this at $204.30

However I have been using one of these as my daily for a bit. and Coming from a Note8 and Note 9. It is a real POS. May issues that conflicts as my daily driver.

For kids and office phones, No Prob…

    • What kind of "may issues that conflict"?

      • +1

when typing you are FOREVER pushing the Home button and making the messageing screen disappera (FB messenger or SMS. Even though I know i am going to do it and very conscous of it. I will still hit it every 5th word.
There is a setting that lets you HIDE the bottom buttons during daily driver EXCEPT during messenger apps. Go figure

Also google maps (and FB i think) does a floating screen. It places itself randomly on the 1/2 shown on button. You cant reposition it. if you try to move it, it disappears until you get the app back up that you were trying to use (That the maps was covering) and back in the same (profanity) place.
It is endless and random of 80% doing this.

Im also a App hog (FB, Messenger, Maps, Rood Worrior and few others runnuing but no games), so when you open a few it dies down on speed and hangs.
Google assistant is also way less relable than Samsung

Their android setup is also quite annoying. But coming from Samsung I can accept that.

For kids and tiktok. The camera is premium for them. My staff gets good pics of food when something interesting comes up.

        $500 phone for $200
BUT for the things that affect me. its not worth 2 cents.

BUT as Samsung Trade up STOLE MY Note 9 and S10 (sent me Non working trade up code)
and no one on phone support can help (Transfer afetr transfer after transfer (Serously 10 times in a circle on 3 different occasions)
        No one on email responds
Their 3rd party processors are yes man to get you off the phonee and then nothing,

Then I got A54 while sorting the other shite out (That has been since October 2020)

F You Samsung you theiving F's

        Hope that info helps

        • Oh,…..you have many issues, with Oppo and Samsung alike.

Do you have Oppo A52,A53 or A54 like you mention above?

This post is for the A52. My needs are probably more simple than yours, but keep in mind

that all phones have something that someone does not get use to or like.

          • +1

@ozhunter68: I have multi A52. Ive been buying them since they were at the $300 mark. Good bang for the buck For the normal. at $200. They cant be beaten. As Ive been on flagships, I am aware was beneath my daily needs, But needed something while dealing with Samsung BS.
Use it for my Staff to take phone pics, Food drivers and kids phones. No issue for basics..

  • My 9-year old is hassling me for phone to do tiktok videos. Does this phone fit the bill?

  • Looking at new phones as an upgrade from my long in the tooth oneplus 3t.
Anyone used both? I'm not really into playing a grand for a phone but this does seem quite cheap and I'm not sure if it is worth it.

    • +3

I upgraded to this from IPhone 7. no complaints. works just great. just don't forget to enable high performance mode. only turn it off to conserve power when longer standby times required

  • +6

$200 odd for 64GB, SD665, local warranty (also local service centre, I went into walk in one in Melbourne CBD, they gave me a replacement phone on the spot because the flash wouldn't work). I am not sure whether people can find anything better but obviously people with better (more expensive phones) would disagree.

  • +4

    my experience:
    - price beat at Officeworks (Mobilecity is $225 with free delivery) but gave $5 donation
    - my previous phone was IPhone 7
    - phone is built well, comes with free protection case and screen protector too
    - screen is very good and clear
    - Android 11 update came almost immediately
    - turned on high performance mode, works great
    - nice and snappy

  • +2

Hi everyone i just got one of these and i remember seeing people talk about downloading gcam to make the camera better. What is gcam exactly…is it a google camera app? and is it available from the play store?

    • I don't have this phone. But you can't download it from the Play store. There are many versions of APKs out there that may have different bugs and side effects, which would also depend on what features your phone's hardware physically supports. Maybe post a separate question in the forum and someone that's messed around with the phone could suggest a version.

      https://www.getdroidtips.com/download-google-camera-for-oppo…

      • Thanks for the reply but yeh I think I'll probably leave mine the way it is. Thanks for the explanation though 👍👍

  • Would this support wireless charging?

    • No. Only way is one of those special cases,….if you can find one.

  • Good Guys now selling for $219, my Dad just bought one this morning.

  • Okay. I just got mine and have been using it for a day. Why does it auto-close apps like Pokemon Go (not exactly intensive) when i just swap to my music player for 10 seconds? Can it really not cope with running two light apps like that at the same time? It kills both my music player and Poke-Go when i swap between the two?

At first i thought it was a setting, and in app settings i enabled them both to have unrestricted background access but it is still shutting them down from the lightest of task swapping, wtf?

  • I Also just got one from OfficeWorks, any suggestions on a case for this A52. So far the device is good for what I need. My last mobile is a Samsung s6….

  • anyone else having issues with the proximity sensor being way too sensitive when on calls?

  • What's the difference between Oppo A5 and A52?
