What Router Option for nbn FTTP with Superloop

Hey guys I have just moved into a new house with has fttp. I signed up to superloop last night and got a text to say it’s activated this AM (so fast!).

Is there any suggestions on a router to buy? We live in a 3 bedroom house, which will have multiple smart gadgets attached and occasional gaming and some streaming. I have never purchased one before (usually just get the supplied one in an apartment) so I’m happy to spend a few $$ to get any features to future proof it. I believe because it’s fttp I only need a router anyway

I was thinking whether to just buy the google nest option or perhaps the Netgear D6220 AC1200 which is on sale at umart.
Thanks!

  • Purchase a router only. What speed did you signup for?

  • Just the 50/20 speed.

    • Nest wifi is suitable and has Wi-Fi 5. If you want Wi-Fi 6 there are other options. How much did you want to spend?

I would go TP-Link Deco M5 or M9. I have installed a lot of these recently, never any issues.

Keep in mind however that there will be only 1 spare data port, so you may need a switch if you need to plug things in.

You will get great wifi coverage too..

    • Thanks. Do you have any suggestions for wifi 6 devices? I’ve seen the Asus zen wifi and netgear orbis are an option too

Yup NBN Co will provide the modem component so you only require the router with FTTP.

Depends what speed tier are you gonna go on and the layout of your house (location of NBN box etc)? As not much point getting high end gear that supports higher speed tiers If your just going basic to mid. I'd suggest at least 50 Down/20 Up or the 100 Up/20 down tiers. I got away with a decent connection with a single router for a bit when I was in a smaller 3 BR Unit as the NBN box was pretty central to all the living areas and BR for coverage.

Depending on your budget, wifi 6 (802.11AX) mesh systems could be an option to future proof your setup which again depends on what NBN Speed Tier you are going to with Superloop. Though they are pricier than say wifi 5 mesh systems like the Nest, though Nest is easy to setup, price is pretty good and performs decently. A few friends on higher speed NBN tiers are using Netgear Orbi (AX4200, RBK752) and Asus Zenwifi AX Mesh setups.

I currently use 2 Asus RT-AC88U's (got both a while ago slightly used for a decent price) with AiMesh together to cover my current place, 3 bedroom single storey 29 squares. Unfortunately our NBN box is in the garage which isn't ideal but o well.

    • Thanks mate. I would love a wifi 6 system. There was one at jbhifi today that was the D link Covrax ac1800.

The nbn box is in the garage and all places are within 15-20 meters of this.
