  • Aust Open started already? I thought it's from 8th Feb.

    • This is not the Australian but a warmup tournament the " Summer Series"

      • It’s actually multiple tournaments all held centrally at Melbourne park.

    • +1

It's a warm up event. All this week are ATP & WTA events leading up to the open.

They're streaming all the sessions on Nine Streaming

    • This is the Melbourne Summer series tournaments - they are WTA 500 tournaments and an ATP 250, all held centrally

  • Looks like all tickets are sold out. When I searched 2 adults it said no tickets.

    • +1

      Plenty of tickets.

Maybe just click the "Best Available" and change it to Seating in the lower.

      • Yeah second time it worked.

    • +2

Every time someone looks for a tickets it seems to allocate them. If you redo your search eventually you'll find tickets as they drop out of people's searches.

      Just got shown:

      16
      ROW
      N
      SEAT
      259-260
Seating in the Lower, Seating is Exposed to Sunlight, MCA ZONE - GARDEN SQUARE ENTRANCE

  • -1

So looking at the schedule Ash Barty is due to play doubles on Court 7. Wouldn't this mean these Margret Court Arena tickets are no good if you want to see her?

    • +1

I’m pretty sure todays schedule and all courts listed for today’s schedule fall into the “Margaret court arena” zone - so you should be able to access those courts.

I could be wrong though, I can’t find a map or court #’s that fall into the Margaret court zone.

    • All the outside courts are in the MCA zone

  • Looks to be sold out now. I tried every combination of tickets (upper / lower / best available) and only 1 adult and it keeps saying "We couldn’t find the tickets you searched for"

  • -7

Australian Open organisers are trying to squeeze as much money out of the fans this year by dividing tickets into 3 zones.

Im surprised this is even free!

    • +3

      This isn’t the Australian Open.

Also tickets have generally been in 3 main classes previously anyways - Rod Laver, Hisense & Margaret court. So there is no squeezing of any money - just zoning people to ensure a covid safe plan

        • So I guess you believe there has been no pandemic causing new protocols to be in play ?

Really I can't believe some people in this world .

        • +1

No ground passes this year as dictated by the CHO of the Vic Government. Just glad there is an event on even if I had to shell out a bit to buy MCA tickets just to see western outdoor courts.

          • -2

@neil: Yeah fair but do you think that jump in price from $56 to $141 is reasonable?

Yeah I understand we are lucky to have it but some of those prices seems unjust.

  • OOS right down to 1 ticket .

    • How about ‘Margret The Greatest Tennis Player of all Time Court’?

64 grand slam titles! Unbelievable record and an absolute Australian Tennis legend.

      • If Charles Manson was once the greatest ranked player of all time, then we certainly should call it the Charles Manson Arena.

  • Covid free or free covid

  • +1

Just call it the Biggoty Granny Arena already.

^ I'm amazed the screeching banPCees haven't harrased enough people to get it renamed yet

i still can't fathom all the rediculous people handing back their OAs.
they were vein enough to accept them in the first place
    using public money
and are now revelling in the press attention of handing them back
which far outweighs the little attention they would of got for receiving them in the first place

    • -1

I would like to know how you'd react if someone attacked your identity under the guise of religious belief. May I ask about your background?

      • +8

        sure
        i'm a 'lesbian'
so she does attack my 'identity' all the time
that doesn't mean i think she shouldn't be able to say it

        • +4

Nobody cancelled or stopped her saying anything.

          • @Paul B: not for lack of trying
people have been campaigning to have her arena renamed for years
and now they are campaigning to have her AC removed
they've also campaigned against her charity work

            • +1

@bargain huntress: Eternal RWNJ victimhood claims immunity from consequences for speaking bullshit and being deplorable.
That has nothing to do with free speech.
              It is not her arena.

              • @Paul B: i agree she is a nut job, and an eternal victim

                but how does this:
                https://www.theage.com.au/national/western-australia/margare…

                help anyone?

                • @bargain huntress: Not really my point but I'll have a go.

Lotteries funding charities is bullshit PR to justify their social licence to rip people off. USA is heavy using lotteries to fund schools. They should just set tax rates as needed to fund essential services to the level that voters decide, but so much easier to sell a lottery than actually tax Bezos etc.

Trying to untangle the lottery - religion - charity bullshit the article ends with
"Lotterywest is working with the WA Emergency Relief Forum, which was also involved in the grant application, to ensure this decision will not affect the provision of emergency food relief to people in need."

Therefore I do not care whether this grant is is approved or not

                  • @Paul B: Yeah I saw that bit, I'm not sure how they can guarantee it though considering the size of her operation.

Yes the lottery is BS. So is charities to feed people having to exist.
Are you gonna start one though? One not funded by gambling pr? One not funded by religion? Or get the government to do their job instead? Or fix it so people don't need free food?
I don't know how to do any of those things, so I'm glad she does even if she is a troll.

If you are hungry enough you probably don't care much where your next meal comes from or who pays for it

        • -5

We have laws against hate speech. So clearly the government thinks she shouldn't be able to openly discriminate against sexual orientation or gender. Defending her is like saying that women shouldn't have the right to vote

          • +7

@belongsinforums: I wish we could live in an inclusive society where fellow Australians respect each other for their different backgrounds and beliefs - even if they don't agree with them? Margaret is an incredible sportsperson - winning 64 grand slams!!

Here's a quote replying to critics from someone who actually knows Margaret - rather than those who just jump on the media-headline bandwagon:

"Anyone who has worked with Margaret Court, or knows her as I do, will testify that she treats gay and transgender people with absolute respect and dignity." - Peter Abetz

          • +3

@belongsinforums: Trying to equate someone agreeing with the concept of free speech to taking away women’s votes is disingenuous and completely misrepresenting what they said

        • +3

So why can’t people hand back their OA’s then? Free speech and all right?

          • @TightTerry: certainly
they can accept them, hand them back, and seek press coverage for doing so.
and i can criticise them for it.
            isn't free speech wonderful.

i am however not now going to harrass, or attempt to cancel them

        • Why is it okay for her to publicly attack your lesbianism and your belief that its okay for you to be a lesbian, but not okay to criticise her supernaturally founded beliefs or her religion which compels her to denounce you for your open lesbianism? Makes her kind of a hypocrite, is she the only one who is allowed to say something is morally wrong and unacceptable behaviour. When it’s turned around on her identity and beliefs suddenly its all unacceptable and going too far.

          • @AustriaBargain: you make an important point. it is fine to make arguements against her arguements. i don't think its ok to personally attack her. and i don't think it's necessarily ok to campaign against her unrelated accomplishments.

      • +1

If your identity is essentially just your sexual orientation, then the name of a tennis court is the least of your worries.

        • Acting as if through human history straight people haven't made their identity all about being straight and attracting the opposite sex..

        • @king splendor
          agreed

        • It's not that. It's that a big part of people's identity is not being validated. If someone told me that Ozbargaining is not a lifestyle, I'd fight them

          • +1

            @belongsinforums:

If someone told me that Ozbargaining is not a lifestyle, I'd fight them

            lol
            I suppose it is

It's that a big part of people's identity is not being validated.

But how much validation is a person entitled to? I'd agree that all humans are entitled to a universal minimum healthy amount of validation - that is important for human mental health. But I don't think anyone is entitled to constant validation from everyone.

Sometimes people won't like you, that's life.

            • -1

@bargain huntress: We don't have to like each other, but we do have to get along. Our laws in Australia ban discrimination against certain traits. You don't have to like that either, but there are penalties for doing so.

              • @belongsinforums: i haven't ever seen anyone offer evidence she does descriminate
she would have ample opportunity via her charity

what she does do is say stupid things, followed by reveling in the attention it brings her

                saying mean things isn't descrimination

    • +2

You know Margret Court accepted an AC, right?

Is she vein? (I mean the answer is incredibly obvious given how much she seeks to stir up)

      • -1

        ^oh yeah she is

she has an AO and an MBE too i believe

i mean she was a professional athlete so not exactly ever a wallflower, but i'd say she's also become addicted to the negative attention now, thanks to being constantly harrassed for her weird views

    • +1

There are a number of underlying causes with this and I can't bother trying to write it all down. In a nutshell, consider:

-biblical conservative views coming up in mainstream modern media
-same sex marriage legal status in Australia
      -mainstream views towards homosexuality
-more accolades given to an aussie legend who happens to hold them conservative views

With that, you get the current shizbang. I don't know who is in the wrong and what freedom of speech means anymore. I'm sure people in the US would agree with me on this point (if nothing else).

  • +2

I'm here, place is empty. Keep trying, perhaps the site was overwhelmed.

    • -1

The name Margaret Court doesn't draw a crowd like it used to.

  • Tickets are still available. Just keep trying every few minutes if it says sold out. I think we got good seats in Section 10 out of the sun.

    • +4

Enjoy the tennis for all us OzBargainers who can't get to Melbourne!!

  • +4

Just got a selfie with Ash Barty. Thanks op for posting this!

    • +1

      Nice work! You’re welcome.

  • -3

ah nice the homophobic racist arena. I'll take 2.

    • Strange. I’ve never seen anybody running away from a homosexual in a state of irrational fear.

      • -1

You need to look up homophobia. It doesn't mean what you think it means

        • I know what it means.
          It’s a ridiculous term.

          • -1

@King Splendor: theres a word for most common things in life. i would say that anyone scared of 'catching gay' fits this description. yes, there are plenty of people who believe this.

  • -1

Odd that people getting OUTRAGED at her views on homosexuality are silent on a certain other religions view on it. I mean homosexuals have literally been thrown off the roof of tall buildings in some countries. And we have many recent arrivals from these countries who share that same view.

In fact in the recent vote on same sex marriage, the electorate in NSW that had the highest anti same sex marriage at 73.9% was Blaxland in Sydney that includes suburbs Auburn, Bankstown , Guildford, and purely coincidentally of course ALL are where a certain religion has a large concentration of followers.
