Recommendations for Good Online Asian Grocer

Any recommendations on a good Asian grocer who has an online presence with delivery? I'm in Wentworthville (a Sydney suburb).

  • haven't used them but their Facebook seems received good feedback

Did a recent order from them. Prices were decent but postage was a bit of a killer for me. They are Sydney based so pickup may be the go for you.

Edit : they don't do pickup but flat rate postage $12 for up to 20kg to Sydney suburbs.

    The best !

  • Depends on what sort of Asian groceries you are after. I find that Woolworths/Coles have almost all the Asian groceries that I would ever use and their prices and delivery networks can't easily be matched by smaller independent Asian groceries.

    Online Asian Grocer

Almost sounds like an oxymoron. Grocer implies fresh, veg, etc. Asian implies cheap. Online food implies buying in bulk, delivery costs.

I buy a lot of veg from my local. 3-4 large bunches of buk choy, choy sum, tong choy, even gai lan in a bag are typically $2.50-$3.00 depending on season. $10 worth lasts the family 4-5 days worth of Asian veg (we also eat other veg). I might also buy tomatoes, Aussie shiitake mushrooms and purple sweet potato, and some fruit specials. If I don't, I'd hardly buy enough to even cover the shipping costs of these online grocers.

      Asian implies cheap.

I thought Asian just implies Asian foods?

I think ihbh meant costs less, rather than low quality.

    • it's difficult not to interpret ihbh's comments as racist and ignorant.

Even grocery stores need to be judged through a white prism?

I said I regularly buy a lot of Asian veg from my local Asian grocer. How is this racist or ignorant? I am pointing out that they are bloody incredible value compared to Coles/Woolworths and even Harris Farm which has regular Asian veg specials, and another Asian grocer, all of which are convenient to me .

This incredible value would be negated if I bought it online to be delivered, which my local can't do/won't do, to keep the costs down.

Asian grocers paradoxically keep costs down by not doing online delivery (the ones that do are not a "real" Asian grocer I'm used to).

I think the confusion in your comment was that you implied (obviously mistakenly) that Asian grocers don't sell fresh food - via your oxymoron remark. You do make a good point about buying in bulk to make online worthwhile - however Colesworths appear to get pickers to sell their nearly expired produce - far better to examine the produce and buy it yourself.

Your more recent use of the 'paradoxically' word also doesn't mean what you think it does (how is it self contradictory, it refutes your point?) - no online delivery does keep costs down, but I imagine the OP would be willing to pay for delivery.

    • i guess ihbh likes big words but doesn't really understand how those words change the tone and meaning of his sentences.

Asian grocers should work on banding up together to sell produce at the right price and improve their shop decor. No point trying to undercut one another and position themselves as the underdog in the world of grocery. (i'm not asking them to be as flashy as Woolworths). Their current business model and shop décor devalue their own worth and pricing power in the marketplace.

      • Well I just find it fascinating that ihbh starts off with a term that refers to something contradictory (oxymoron), then ploughs on to self contradict their self (paradoxically). Hmmm…

No disrespect to ihbh, I did understand the point that they were trying to make (I mean for all I know they've only been speaking English for a year or so - if so, well done!), but I agree, understand big words before you deploy them.

Sorry off-topic - I was just trying to help ihbh by explaining why his comment was misinterpreted.

Online … Asian Grocer - think about it.

I added paradoxical to help fools understand.

Didn't I say: I buy a lot of veg from my local. 3-4 large bunches of buk choy, choy sum, tong choy, even gai lan - isn't this fresh food? Do you buy fresh food from Asian grocers?

I added paradoxical to help that other dude understand the point.
