What Learning Managment System (LMS) Do You Use at Your School? What Do You Love/Hate?

Hey everyone, this is my *second post. Thanks for making it this far!

I'm a software developer and I want to help teachers and students by creating a Learning Management System that has a focus on simplicity and superior user experience. I'm about 1/3 of the way through creating a potential MVP.

I've been told by several students and teachers that most platforms out there cause them headaches in many ways. It would help me immensely if you are a student or teacher and willing to share your experiences and opinions with me.

Thank you very much in advance!

I'm about 1/3 of the way through creating a potential MVP.

After years of using my LMS (Canvas) and SMS, I feel like I could design something better. But there's a reason why we pay a vendor 100k a year to license this software - it's spent years in development and is constantly evolving.

That being said, an LMS for primary/high school shouldn't be too tricky. I'm in higher ed, so there's a lot more to it than 7 classes that runs from Feb-Dec with the same teacher etc.

Are you being employed as a dev to create this LMS, or do you work at a school as a tech and are doing this on the side of your desk?

    • Hey SnowDragon, thanks for your response :)

I'm definitely not aiming to take on the big established guys, I just want to create some kind of simple alternative that is really enjoyable to use.

So possibly primary school level is a good target to aim for. Thank you!

I'm doing this as a side project. I have a part time job at a school and also do a bunch of freelance dev work for multiple clients.

Hey everyone, this is my first post.

Hey you must have been sleeping on the job.

    What about this one

    • Ahhh I completely forgot about that one! BTW that mattress is great for about 6 months and then starts to turn into a sinking pit :(

  • I use Learndash for my wordpress website.

    • Hey mate, do you mind if I ask you a couple of questions.

Question banks - does that mean that we can have multiple questions for one criteria, and therefore students may not get the same questions (ie. two students that may be sitting next to each other can't just copy each others answers)?

Do you know if there's an option to upload assessments/projects? (EDIT: I see there is. Would you happen to know if there are file limits? We also have students film themselves, so are looking for an option that also allows to upload video files).

How does student login work? Does LearnDash handle all the student login stuff directly?

Do you have it integrated with anything else?

Hope you don't mind. Cheers :)

I don't use question bank feature so I don't really know how it works.

There is option to upload assessment and you can set up your own size limit.

For student login, I use ultimate member plugin. It's a free plugin and works well for my purpose. Learndash can handle login but if you need a more detailed registration form (other than email and password), you need a seperate plugin.

I use a bunch of other plugin in my site such as gravity form, uncanny, etc but it depends on your needs.

        • Cheers mate :)

  • FYI, market competition is very strong with this in Australia - target the cheaper end of the market on fees and you will have a chance (circa ~$50k per annum)

Hey cheers :) That's kind of my goal! Don't want to be eaten alive haha.

I'm not looking at making a heap of money. I just want to focus on building something helpful for smaller schools.

  • what is it?

  • Seesaw has become popular in primary school in Vic. Moodle is another extensively used one. Google Classroom is free for Vic Schools and also has a pretty big following.
