What Are These Garden Critters?

What are these critters? They are white with 3 black stripes along the length of the body. They like compost. Are they millipedes?

All the millipede images on the search engines seem to be big black ones (which I occasionally come across at the bottom of leaf piles), but these are much smaller, ~2-3cm.

  • I guess lawn grubs?

More than 6 legs, and black and white? It’s gotta be a whitetail spider…

Seriously though, it looks like some kind of millipede. It’s worth mentioning I didn’t exactly get good marks for my insect identification class.

    • The default is always “white tail”

      Damn, beat me to it…

  • My guess is millipede…

If they are tiny and were under something, like a pot or leaf litter, they may not have gotten their colour yet.

    • I'm guessing that is about as big as they get. I never find any large ones of any colour nearby.

  • Possibly a zebra millipede.
See if they glow under a UV light!

      Or maybe this one

      • Yes, they could even be the same species because I think that Hawaiian one glows too.
Its hard to tell though when so many are called either zebra or striped.

the first sequence of a human centipede

    • I've just had an idea for a movie…

  • Just ask nicely. It will give its name to you 😷
