Alternative to ING for Fee Free ATM International Cash Withdrawal?

ING in The Before Times used to give you not only 0% transaction fees on purchases, but also 0% fees on cash withdrawals from international ATMS from your savings.

While that was good - the thing that really separated it from the other competitors like 28 degrees etc, was the fact they actively REFUNDED any ATM fees. This meant it was actually feasible to only take out a sensible amount of cash from an ATM without being hit with a minimum $10 - $20 surcharge.

But I no longer bank with ING, their savings rate is horrid, and they need all these weird conditions to be met before it works - so what is a good alternative card that accomplishes the same thing for fee free cash withdrawal?

Obviously there's probably no international travel any time soon, but I feel like I wanna get one ready to start the dream a little for when it finally does open up again.

Have you considered UP? (Up.com.au). If you are keen to open - please make sure you use referral to help fellow ozbargainer. This month only you get $15 for opening an account with UP. What are you waiting for?

  • Up banking says they don’t charge fee if you withdraw from international BIG BANKS

  • UBank does not charge fees for international withdrawals, however does not reimburse other banks' fees like ING does.

Also see this Mozo article which primarily discusses UBank, but lists other banks that also have no international ATM fees. The article is 2 years old now, so is not completely up to date, but it's a good place to start!

You can use ING everyday without their savings products and get these benefits. The conditions are simply:
    - deposit 1k per month (as of now you can even remove it immediately)
    - use the card, via nfc, tapping or online at least 5 times a month. Ensure transactions are cleared by end of month.

For the transactions, I've linked my subscriptions to ING. So no need to actually take it out anywhere unless I plan to travel.

    citibank plus

    • why no one discuss this option citibank plus, weird

      Citibank Plus Everyday Account
      https://www1.citibank.com.au/banking/bank-accounts/citibank-…

Citibank Australia does not charge Citibank Plus everyday account holders a fee when they withdraw funds from an international ATM or use their Citibank Debit Card to make in-store purchases overseas. Customers may be charged by the third party provider, which Citibank Australia does not control.

so, ING still better? or actually the exact same ?

free atm withdrawal only works at citibank branded atms. otherwise the atms will charge you a fee for using their service.

whereas, ING is refunding the atm fees.

        • ok so ING is still the best and the only one for overseas travel

    Nobody else refunds the fee.

Just keep the account open and empty, and only bother with the conditions the month before you travel.

There is no account keeping fee, so there is no obligation to do anything in months you don't want to use it.

This. There's no real downside for months that you aren't traveling and don't bother meeting the conditions on the ING account.

I find loading up the account prior to my trips and buying a few coffees in the month prior to departing not especially troublesome.

As above. Nothing comes close to this account for Aussies travellers. I would not be in a rush to close it. Just keep it active and do your "weird conditions" the month before you travel. Pray it stays around sure beats paying $10 for each withdrawal somewhere like Chile.

  • Out of interest, you say "I no longer bank with ING, their savings rate is horrid". Who do you use now?

    • The margin between a great rate and nothing, is pretty thin.

Cryptocurrency savings pool. Have to convert savings to USD (and back, when I'm done), but sits in a ~6% p.a interest account.

  • I can't believe this. Ing why don't you try to become as simple as possible…..

    • Because greed and profits.
