I was thinking about building a VM Host at home, this would do nicely, except for the fact that I could spend this much on a dual CPU xeon 2678v3 setup with CPUs,RAM & Mobo for this price, and 24 cores/48 threads total to boot. Though that would be a bit slower.

  • Is this better than a 5900x besides the corr advantage?

    • You need a Threadripper Motherboard for this

      no it's worse

The only thing thats better is the core count. The clock speed and instructions per clock are better on the Ryzen 5000 chips.
If you're not doing extremely multithreaded tasks (like rendering or data processing), there's really no need for threadripper other than to flex

        2950X: PCIe 3, 60 lanes

Bifuricated PCIe NVME Drives absolutely makes thaty a killer for VM's I currently have a 5950X and have maxed my PCIe lanes!

        • Totally agree, I went from a 2920x to the 5950x, While core count and IPC went up, I've had to compromise so many things due to the lack of PCI-E lanes, I can feel the bottle neck now in the desktop platform. I Had to get a new raid card as didn't have enough lanes to Bifurcate 4x PCIe NVME Drives. In fact the 5950x build cost way more than the Threadripper did as got the Threadripper CPU and mobo on sale.
If I come across another good Threadripper deal again I will be going back to Threadripper.

  • There were some brand new 3950x on ebay at around $850-950 weeks ago. Centrecom was having 5900x in stock at $859. Apart from that b450/550/x570 motherboard are cheaper (asus prime p x570 was $207 on Amazon
