myPlates Discount -Feb 2021

Dear All,

My birthday is coming up and I got a hint from my family members that they would want me to choose anything to do with the car and pay for it. I always wanted a customised number plate and I just checked it's available. But saw the 20% discount offer is no longer there.
The annual fees seems really high $469/year is that how much it costs to maintain this number plate ? Isn't there a year round discount for these ? Sorry had no clue how expensive it is !

    When I checked your combo it's $109/yr ??

  • And yes, there is an annual fee depending on the type of plate, you can lock it in by prepaying for multiple years if you want. The discount is usually for the initial issue price of the plate (not the ongoing 'maintenance' cost)

I would strongly suggest to reconsider. Unless you have a show-car going to events and being photographed for magazines or the like, it's just an absolute complete waste of money and continuous drain year after year. I'm sure you can think of something better to get.

    • I kind of agree, and think custom plates on a daily driver seem kind of tacky, but a lot of people want to feel unique or display their vanity or something. Each to their own.

      • I've seen a guy drive around in a basic car with "DRTAX" as his number plate. Which ever way you consider the number plate, it just seems cringy.

    Yep.

I suspect your family probably had in mind something with a one off cost, not a lifetime tail of expense.

In all seriousness, 500-odd bucks a year for a number plate is just ridiculous when (by the implication of your post), you're a young person (bloke?) who I would imagine doesn't have a massive income and has all life's expenses ahead of them. Keeping a car on the road can be hideously expensive at the best of times, let alone dropping $500 a year on something that many people consider a total w@nk.

^ Please listen to this. Maybe upgrade your stereo unit instead or get some decent A/T tyres for off-roading (if applicable) or get it deep clean detailed if older vehicle etc. Something that's at least worthwhile.

      • I think OP has a recent merc sedan, A/T are of no use.

If you are going to waste money then waste it on something you will get something out of, not fancy letters on a number plate.
Those things are a rip off.

  • Happy Birthday for whenever,,,

    That W205 is a sweet ride. :+)

Hate to burst someone's bubble but as a former personalised plate owner for 4 years (not any more) I gotta tell you something.

    1. Unless you feel extremely lucky or meaningful with the desired plate design/content, just let it go.
    2. Unless you would like to be a very special street kid or highly recognisable when driving (trust me it is not always a good idea, that's why so many luxury cars are even using the very basic plate), just let it go
    3. Unless you are wealthy but I assume you are not, at least at your current stage, otherwise I would not have a chance to speak to you in here, just let it go
    4. Unless after reading the above words and you still feel really into it, go for it!

    Happy Birthday anyway

  • Just get your current plates done to a style (slimline and colour change) and it will only cost the plate fee and no extra per year if you just keep the current letter/number combo.

Dont waste your money on personal plates unless you can write them off on tax as advertising. It's a total scam in NSW.

It’s a shame that every personalised combo now has an ongoing fee. Once upon a time you could choose your own in a standard letter/number combo and it was just a one off fee.

Once off fee? I’d consider it. Ongoing fee? No thanks.

    • well, just move interstate, quite a few still let you own the plate for lifetime with just one off, in VIC it's around $500 last time I check for the cheap one.

      • …But then I’d be living in Victoria and down $500

    • Yeah when a third party company is involved and like most things that's used to be owned/managed by the NSW government, the prices go up:

myPlates is the brand name for personalised number plates in NSW. In October 2010, Plate Marketing Pty Ltd were appointed by the RTA (now the RMS) to manage the sales and marketing functions of the personalised plates business. The RMS has not 'sold' the business; we work with them to manage these functions.
