[Solved] Find me a basic GPU for Casual Gaming

I picked up a Galax 1650 from a Ozb post in September that has now needed to be sent back for repair/replacement as it stopped working.

It seems that the GPU market is getting hammered at the moment and prices are high, but has anyone seen any older or lower end cards at good price lately?

I'd possibly be willing to go second hand, bit ideally new with warranty.

Suggestions on a quality card at good price welcomed too.

    Name checks out

  • Have you tried looking for another 1650?

  • There are normally 2 ways to go about this: Define what your budget is, and people can recommend good cards in that price range, or what your usage case is (ie I only play pong on DosBoxat 800x600 or I am looking to to be playing AAA releases at 4K) and people can look into what card you'll need to get decent FPS for usage.

Previously you had a 1650 which is a good start - do you have a link to the old post so we can see which model of 1650 it was? Was that card doing everything you needed it for or would you be looking for a slight upgrade (its only been 5 months but maybe your usage plan has changed)

I assume as a base case you would want to replace the card with similar performance for as low a price as possible?

    • Yeah, the use case is CS:GO once, maybe twice a week. I also use the computer for work a lot which needs to handle tools such as FIGMA (vector prototyping) and rarely, Adobe suite. The built-in Intel chip is handling this today which is good to know.

So, a minimal amount of gaming really, but there are times although rare, where I will buy/download a newer game to play. But time isn't on my side, so I tend to lean toward CS:GO or free games that come with my Amazon Prime sub.

The reason I landed on the one I did was that my previous GPU died around the time of the bargain. That and price point got me over the line as I didn't want to invest in a new-gen card because the cost vs bottlenecks etc.

My overall build is pretty outdated but works for me just fine with the only issues being the GPU.

      Intel Core i5-6500 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Processor
Gigabyte GA-B150M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
      Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-2133 CL14 Memory
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
SanDisk SSD PLUS 120 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Deepcool TESSERACT BF ATX Mid Tower Case
Antec NeoECO 520 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

Anyhow, don't stress as I'll see what comes back with warranty and take it from there.

      Cheers…

  • How long will it take to get your current card repaired/replaced? If you can wait that might be best considering the inflated prices of even low end GPUs these days

    • Yeah, fair point, I think I'll see what the turnaround time is on the card before making any decisions.

  • UPDATE: GPU was faulty and replaced! Consider this case closed!
