Poll: Returning Unexpectedly Smelly Shampoo / Conditioner

My wife purchased some shampoo from Coles yesterday that is incredibly stinky. A couple of members of the family have used it in the last 24 hours and it has overtaken the house. The smell lingers in the hair for hours and in the car. It's eyewateringly strong compared to previous shampoos and conditioners we've bought.

The question: do you think a store should accept an item like this for return?

(the product was Herbal Essences Golden Moringa Oil)

I thought standard procedure when thinking about trying a new shampoo or conditioner is to open the bottle in store and smell it, before purchasing.

standard procedure is open, smell then sing the decore ad song

As I shampoo my hair, I really love new Decore. And I, I love the feeling, Nothing can beat it, oh no. Yes I, oh, I really love it, Oh-oh. So does the family, c'mon, New Decore, Say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Agreed. It's not the retailer's fault - your beef is with the manufacturer.
It's already open so while the retailer may take it back, it will go straight into the bin and it will be a loss for them.

Coles can wipe their tears with $100 dollar bills.

        • +2

Yeah yeah big evil corporation etc.
          It's more the principle.

@cuteseal: Just seems like a pointless thing to worry, or feel guilty about.

      • +1

Nah, the retailer will return it to the wholesaler/distributor for a refund.

The wholesaler will refund them the money and probably tell them to just throw it away.

        • +1

That's wholly dependent on whether the employee you return it to can be bothered or whether they just bin it and chalk it up as a loss.

          • @cuteseal: Most businesses will have a process to deal with returns, so its rarely up to the employee.

For larger retailers it will just be entered into the system as a return, and binned straightaway under a certain value. On the backend, a credit note will be generated for the supplier automatically.

You would actually drive to the store, and ask for a refund, over a $5 bottle of shampoo that you deem "too smelly", that you could have smelt in store before buying?

    • -1

It's hard to know from smelling in the store that the smell would linger. At best you could decide if it was a smell you liked or not.

    • Oh, and actually it was $12 each for the shampoo/conditioner, so $24.

        Hand back your badge.

You payed full price for those items!

        • +3

No wonder it smells extra horrible at full price.

      • Paying full price for shampoo

It's half price at the moment, I didn't know people actually paid full price for these silly shampoos.

  • Just return it before your next weekly shop. Quicker than posting a poll on Ozbargain :)

It'd be classed as a change of mind return IMO so they're under no obligation to accept it however Colesworth almost certainly would as goodwill.

    • Yeah my feeling too. Coles would refund you.

    • Coles have a “try it love it or your money back” guarantee so given this they are obliged to refund or replace the product.

      • +1

Coles have a “try it love it or your money back” guarantee

Is that only on Coles branded products, with that stamp on the packaging, or ALL products not Coles branded ie. Herbal essence?

        • The FAQ talks about Coles product not Coles branded product but I think you’re right they probably mean “branded” product. It’s a little unclear though.

Throw it away (or use it to wash your dogs if you have any) and buy a new shampoo. Not worth asking for a refund over.

    • Not worth asking for a refund for $24, which he'll almost certainly get, at a shop he's likely going to go back to anyway? Hand in your ozbargain badge.

Yet another one that values their own time at $0 I see.

        • +1

Nope, you're wrong there. Personally I'd definitely be going back to Coles at some point to buy groceries so spending a minute or 2 getting a refund isn't going out of my way and it's a pretty reasonable hourly rate if you're going to look at it that way. I'd expect op is likely to be similar.

Are you entitled to a refund by law? At a guess no. But Coles/Woolies will almost certainly refund since $5 amounts to SFA.

    Fade to black

Coles employee: “Hi, how can I help you today?”

“Want refund on shampoo, it’s too smelly, makes house & car stink bad…”

Coles employee: Sighs (Hmmm, I wonder if that course takes mid year entrants?) “No problem, I see you’ve opened & used the product; but we’ll provide you with a refund as a goodwill gesture”

  • lol what a strange use of Moringa. I only eat fruit/leaves.
