HSBC Doesn't Give 2% at Many Stores

I got my self a HSBC card. There seem to be a number of stores that don't give 2% cash back. For example I didn't get 2% back from my Coles shops, Priceline pharmacy or my doctors. I did get cash back from Bunnings, Chemist Warehouse and Woolworths though.

I was wondering what other OzBargainers experience with the card was.

It's not the stores. It's just that some months you probably forget to deposit the $2k

    • Nup. deposited the $2k.

      • I don't have the HSBC card, but did you just get the card? Could it be a first month issue?

From all the other context I'd check with the bank and find out what the issue is. Is it a specific card that has the cashback? Is it possible you got signed up to a similarly named, but different card without the cashback?

Edit: from the wording I assume you're getting the cashback from some purchases? If you're definitely tap and paying under $100 easiest thing is just to call them and ask what the issue is.

  • I sweep 2k on the first of every month. I tap wherever I can and if possible break a purchase larger than 100 into multiple. works every tap for me…

So you got cashback from Coles? It seems to depend on the merchant.

I've never had an issues getting the 2% cashback from Coles, or any merchants where I use tap & pay.

No problems. Are you tap and pay'ing all purchases?

After Covid changes to allow tap and pay for amounts over $100, I did notice that I only received 2% for those transactions that were less than $100 (even if used tap and pay for the larger purchases).

There are list of excluded transactions (eg. public transport topups), however I've found I still receive 2% back using tap and pay at self serve Myki machines in Melbourne.

Check point 5 at bottom of this page https://www.about.hsbc.com.au/news-and-media/hsbc-rewards-cu… :
"Excluded are purchases made for business, commercial or government purposes (including bus, train and ferry), cash withdrawals, foreign and non-fiat currency transfers (such as Bitcoin), travellers' cheques, money orders or money transfers, car parking and vending machine transactions, point of sale cash withdrawals, debt repayments, refunds, payment reversals, gambling and transactions between HSBC accounts."

Most likely people forget about <$100 spend limit.

      • Maybe but I am keeping my transactions below $100.

Sometimes it doesn't post on the account until a few days later.

Coles, Kmart, Uniqlo, Target and the occasional smaller food joint I haven’t been able to get working for my cashback since I joined three months ago. Thought I’d tried with Apple Pay too but just use small purchases at those stores to get my 5 transactions up with Westpac now.

    • Coles, Kmart, Uniqlo, Target

      They've all worked for me.

Find the answer: Due to trxn rerouting.

The only way to make sure the trxn go through VISA is by using digital wallet(GPay, Apple Pay).

    • OP didn't state they were specifically having problems with digital wallet version of the card…

      • No I was tap and go'ing with my physical card. Using the digital wallet version of my card might help. Will see.

        • It definitely works as it uses a VISA virtual card number, the only processing channel. Merchants reroute to EFTPOS(physical cards have both) to save card fee.

          • @Neoika: Yep. Used google pay, and got cashback from Coles this time. Thanks for your help everyone :)

            • @gmatht: If you don't have your phone handy or it's flat etc., you can select which scheme the transaction is processed through by inserting your card. Select CR only as this is VISA; CHQ and SAV use EFTPOS. Tap and go used to always use the CR option (VISA/Mastercard) but this has changed in recent years so the merchant can redirect debit cards to use EFTPOS.

This issue doesn't apply to credit cards. I have my transaction account as CHQ on my credit card and tap and go will always charge to the line of credit.

              • @ascorbic: "Inserting your card" voids 2% cashback for sure.

                • @Neoika: I see. I don't bank with HSBC so don't know the eligibility criteria.

  • Noticed my most recent Opal top-up (Parramatta last month) didn't get the 2% cashback unlike previous times.

Also the most recent transaction is TFNSW RAIL OPAL, whereas the previous ones were TRANSPORTFORNSW OPAL.

  • Capped at max $50 per month ($2500pm) apparently; if you went over that eligible spend.
