I've got it on PC, but am picking it up on Switch for the portability. Great game!

    +1, can't stop playing

    • +1

+1 as well, I never play these kinds of games (most similar game I've played was Diablo 3 after it launched) and I can't put Hades down.

  • I should have paid $130 not $13 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/575569). Finished through to the epilogue. One of the GOATS

  • Is this the lowest it has been for the switch?

Enjoy it a lot. Definitely too faulted to be goty like everyone is claiming.. That's just the hype bandwagon. But it's a great game (top 5 of the year) with heaps of enjoyment, "one more run" gameplay and many hours at a cheap price…It's a winner and I recommend it.

    Why not goty?
Story. Great writing, I love the incremental ending. But then you realise 99% off the text is utterly superficial. And whilst you're always in character it's a bit too generic I love you blah blah sometimes.

Voice acting great, excluding dusa and the long… sloooow.. drawl as Persephone speaks her boring lines.

The weapons are interesting and you'll be encouraged to use all types of them which is great. On the downside there's definitely "if you get it, you win, but if you don't it's an excruciatingly slow path to victory" daedelus upgrades for some weapons (I'm talking pact of punishment 14 where this is becoming more obvious)

Balancing seems great at first but long term you'll see it's faults.

It does throw new builds at you which is cool. On maybe my 90th run I got handed a cast build i never would have tried. Greater recall plus fully loaded = 5 casts and instant magic return. Poseidens flood shot and two braids of atlas later i was flinging around thousands of dps per second explosions in Styx.

It's a bit of a slog until you get death defiance upgrades but after that it gets easy pretty fast. Once you get those upgrades it's a bit of a cakewalk

And it's stayed a cakewalk (I'm getting 15 win streaks without trying) until you get to pact of punishment around 15. Deaths companion possibly too good as a "I'm about to die" solution.

Pro tip: do not release Orpheus' contract. His voice isn't too bad solo but in a duet with Eurydice it's indescribable how bad they sound together. And because they nearly always are together you'll nearly never hear Eurydice's beautiful solo song again. If only I could shove him back in his cage I would.

    • +1

      Sorry, who?

And it's stayed a cakewalk (I'm getting 15 win streaks without trying) until you get to pact of punishment around 15.

Complaining that it's too easy when you can personally choose every aspect of difficulty? Come play with the big kids at Heat 40+ then.

      • -4

You misread. I said its only just starting to get harder at 15.

You want to talk hard come do dead cells on 5bc with me. Yes I can make supremist comments too.

    • I appreciate your considered commentary here. But I think by heat 15 players have put in approximately 70+ hours or so (or I'm extremely slow which I'll gladly cop to; put in over 60+ and I believe 4 is my highest, but feel like I'm just getting started). My point is, once you've gotten over 60 hours out of your $30 game, I'd say that's money well spent, and players can decide whether they liked the finer details or not. For me I've only heard one duet with Eurydice and Orpheus and found it most enjoyable to listen to attentively, in a game not exactly all about the music. Music was arguably more of a focus in Transistor, and possibly a little better in that too, but Hades' soundtrack holds its own.

      • +1

Its worth it. I recommended it. No doubt it's value for money. Just not goty imho.

Hades soundtrack is great, excluding Orpheus duets.

  • Is the physical version of this game available at all on switch? Can't seem to find it anywhere…

  • +1

Any word on PlayStation / XBox versions yet?

    • +1

I am also waiting for this… I have a switch but would much rather play on PS4/PS5… I hope it releases sometime soon… Their other games (Bastion, Transistor and Pyre) were all on PlayStation (not sure about Xbox) so I am pretty sure it will happen eventually.

      • -1

Any reason you'd prefer the PlayStation over Switch?

        • +2

Playstation is my primary console. I only use the switch for exclusives. Reasons are graphics/performance are better and also I like collecting trophies which Nintendo doesn't have.

          • -2

@Shaun Prawn: I never understood the benefits of collecting trophies??

            • +2

@bemybubble: I like to fully complete just about every game I play, and the trophy list is part of that. In some cases it adds quite a bit of extra replay value for me which can be good when I'm really enjoying the game, but sometimes they can be really tedious and the completionist in me will persist even though I'm not really enjoying it.

  • I bought this two days ago full price :(

    • +7

      And still worth every penny

  • +2

One of the best games i've played in a very, very long time - 100% worth getting.

  • +2

I believe there's cross-save function on the Switch (I own Switch version only), so for those who own on other systems, can carry on whilst "carrying on" the Switch. Great ability to pause and "sleep" the console anytime, just to resume where you left off.

I'm not a roguelike enjoyer, but this was made perfectly for me, making me want to return again… and again… and again….

    • +2

You mean it can cross-save with my steam account?

Edit - wow yes you can!

  • +1

Is this game accessible or is it like other rogue-likes where you have to do the first level 50 times to actually stand a chance at level 2 through some grindy permanent character progression?

    • This game changes the definition of grind in such a way that 'grinding' is enjoyable and I would go even further to say that it is synonymous with playing/enjoying the game as intended.

    • Some of the permanent upgrades are a bit OP but it's certainly beatable from the first try. There's a casual mode but I'd say the 'average' gamer shouldn't need it.

      • Certainly beatable from first run… Like this guy? https://youtu.be/VKepf4jyn4o

By my count I took almost 30 runs to complete one. I'm no filthy casual, but I'm not a completionist either. Now that I've "completed" it, I'm on a 10 streak of wins so there's definitely an art to it. But of luck with what gods and boons show up, but yeah it's all learnable with some patience and practice.

    • +3

The general gist is that each time you die, you progress and get stronger (and the storyline continues) - so attempts don't feel like a chore, not "finishing" is still progression.

  • +1

I bought this on PC as I usually like these kinds of games like Diablo but after an hour or two, I just wasn't feeling it. I know tonnes of people love it, so do I just need to give it more of a chance for it's appeal to become more apparent? I know it is hard to describe but what stands out the most about this game?

    • +1

Games like Diablo (positive-reinforcement) rewards efficiency and punishes (negative-reinforcement) failure.

All paths in Hades have positive reinforcement / rewards.

      • Can you buy and sell equipment and is there a bit of a story line in terms of interaction with NPCs etc?

        • -1

Can you buy and sell equipment
Kinda, you'll use each of the 6 weapons for the whole run but there are (hundreds?) of in run upgrades

and is there a bit of a story line in terms of interaction with NPCs etc?
There is a lot of story in there. It's a bit frustrating that it's all 1-way dialogue (can't choose what to say back) but it's decently written

  • I've tried a few roguelikes and this was the first to really grab me, well worth the $$

  • +1

Good opportunity for weekend plans for those in Melbourne lockdown! Will finally pick up, thanks OP.

  • +1

    Hell of a deal.

    • -1

Definitely worth dying for, again and again.

  • Buy first ask questions later.

At worst you've given $30 (or part thereof) to an actually good developer who looks after their staff (actually encourage holiday leave and no crunch!!) and make outstanding games.

But the game is genuinely the most fun I've had in a game in years and very surprising with the level of detail and depth to every aspect.

  • +1

Great price, I got it at this price a while back in its first sale. To contrast the glowing praise though, it wasn’t a great game in my personal opinion, played about 4 hours and never touched it again.

    • That's barely scratching the surface. Did you even unlock the railgun?

      • +1

No but it was more that the gameplay just didn’t sync with me. I was playing it because everyone said I should not because I wanted to.

        • +1

That's never a good reason to do anything

  • Thanks OP, been waiting for this to go on sale!

  • I've only got $22 on the eshop so again I don't have enough to get it

    • Tried mynintendo gold coins?

  • man I freaking love this game. I can see its formula being copied by other developers.

  • For 3 days (until 16 Feb) it's also $28.76 on PC https://store.steampowered.com/app/1145360/Hades/
But if portability is important to you, under $2 more will probably be the go.
