Selling School Uniforms, Is It Legal?

I am thinking to start a business where I sell school uniforms.

Is this actually legal, or school uniforms can only be sold by the school itself?

If the uniforms have logos I believe you'll need permission from the school.

    • It should have, otherwise it limits my sales significantly.

I don't believe schools sell just the logos, do they?

Pretty sure it's similar to government entities where they'll go out to tender where the chosen party gets access to print the school logo and sell the uniform. Anyone else using it may be subject to copyright.

Unfortunately these can run for multiple years so breaking into a school's uniform supply may be a little difficult after the existing one has cemented its way in. Although once you're in its a licence to print money.

For comparison sake our private uniform supplier (government) makes overpriced garbage. I would say it's Kmart quality, but that would be a compliment for the sheer averageness of the uniforms. We have a uniform allowance and paying $65 for a 50% polyester dress shirt with an embroided logo is ridiculous. Thankfully i don't have to pay though. If you can prove that your uniforms are better quality and/or cheaper then you'll be on a good wicket.

    • If the uniforms have logos I believe you'll need permission from the school.

      Only if they have copyright…

      • Technically correct, but I can't see any of the expensive private schools releasing their logos into the public domain.

There are quite a few stores that sell generic school uniforms.

My mum used to get mine from a store and then get the logo patch from the school - never could tell the difference between one provided by the school or generic from shop.

FYI - your business idea not new, so be aware of your competition.

    • who is patching the logo?

So that means the rights to sell the logo is owned by the school?

      • Companies like a-Plus school wear are contracted by the schools to do their embroidery and printing for them.

So unless you have an agreement with a school you probably shouldn't be using their logos to sell your merchandise.

did a better job than my mum.
you could always tell as the colours and materials weren't 100% the same

So you know absolutely nothing about school uniforms and now you want to sell them?

Depends who you sell them to.

If it's someone with a deep voice named Priscilla who wants a uniform in extra large I wouldn't sew a logo on the uniform.

  • Some schools who dont have any logos on some of their uniforms, or other who have like a pupil free day or like somedays without uniform (e.g. for fundrasing) you can try those.
But i think you need the school's permission to be using their logo on anything you are gonna make (especiallly those ones that are gonna be used for commercial purposes e.g. business))

I suggest why not make any other normal clothes?? why school clothes??

You can sell school uniforms that do not have any logos on them as does Target, Kmart and Best&Less, BUT once they have a logo on them then the logo is copyrighted and you will need to get permission from each of the schools individually to get permission and potentially a licensing cost in order to put the logo on the uniform.

I can't work out if the OP means putting the school's logo on generic school uniforms, or buying everything off FB marketplace that people are selling for the school and then setting up an underground secondhand uniform shop.

I kinda hope it is the latter.

Also be aware, some schools don't sell any uniforms on site however they do have partnerships where other shops sell the uniform. I know my school was in partnership with a local business who sell school uniforms as well being sold at Lowes.

What's your plan, buy them on Alibaba and sell them to schools?

You can't print their logos and the quality of those clothes from alibaba will be so bad that your customers will ask for a refund and never buy from you again

  • this is one of the worst ideas i’ve heard

  • Why does a school uniform need their emblem on it?

Can't you just wear generic school colours?
