Why don't you both message the Plex team and ask if they would extend to yourselves? The worst they can say is no but surely if they are offering to some then why not offer to others.

Any money in their pocket is better than no money I would have thought.

      • I tried this and they told me to GFY. (Politely of course)

        • Same here. Let's just say I was not successful πŸ˜‚

      • why is plex such a closed "boys club" woudlnt they want to sell more of these?

They prefer the continual ongoing revenue stream from monthly subscriptions.

    • I have newsletters turned off but still received this deal. Sometimes ends up in junk though.

  • I notice they launched plex arcade recently which gives Atari emulation support and the ability to add emulators and roms. It is a paid service, so I won't be using it.

In case all you plex owners missed it, update your servers or restrict remote access..

  • so newsletters are turned on. no offer. what gives?

    • From what I can tell they only give this offer to people they think won't pay monthly etc now or in the future.

  • Anyone use Plex with Kodi to manage watched status etc. Currently use Emby free version which works well for my use. Don't need to transcode. Just wondering if there's a Plex plugin to keep in sync across different Kodi versions, like Emby has.

    • Yep, I do. Works well. My only problem is weaning my wife off using the native Plex app. My main issue with the native Plex app is I find the NVR flaky. Kodi lets me use nextpvr with Plex, which is great. As soon as my wife wants to record something, I'm going to inform her that Plex NVR is switched off and she must use Kodi. Wish me luck in the divorce. 😁

      • Oh boy do I feel your pain. The amount of times I've changed the setup around here.. at least for me she doesn't even know what an Emby is so would see no difference

  • I have newsletters turned on, and got a newsletter, but I didn't get the offer. Oh well, I would take taken it up but I don't need it.

Super dumb question what is Plex ?

    • +5

It's a media server where you "organize" your any media including movies, tv shows, songs, your own photos or videos - you name it. You set up this server, configure it and just turn on your smart TV or mobile app (which has plex app) to start streaming content in your device. Now you might say you can also stream via samba or upnp protocols from home NAS or something. But it doesn't give you a nice GUI experience (such as Netflix or Prime). Moreover, with Plex you can also create a user (eg your kids) - set a password and automatically limit the PG rated movies to 'em etc.

      Hope that explains it.

      • That explains super clearly thanks mate !

  • I have Plex, and have newsletter signup. No newsletter, no offer. A bummer, really would go for a deal like this. Targeted is so stupid.

I use jellyfin as a free alternative, and it's been working well

  • Least time I tested Plex there was zero Google home integration (ie voice control changing tracks using the phone player. The free version doesn't have much functionality. Kind of wouldn't mind it, Tidal is great but not sure I'll pay $24/m after the free period expires.

    • Although I don't use tidal I read discounted tidal subscription for plex pass users. Quoting from plex website -

A Plex Pass subscription is not required to use TIDAL. If you do already have a Plex Pass subscription, then you'll automatically get a discount on the TIDAL subscription for being a Plex Pass subscriber, when signing up through us.

      • Pretty sure it's only $1-2 off per month.

        • Yeah stuff all and have to do the booking through them. Rather jump on the 6 month free deals that come up every so often.

Have always put Plex in the too hard basket due to the setup cost of a Nas and few server hard drives, plus must stuff you can stream these days
