Digital picture frames & e-reader

hi all,

I am looking for a decent quality 8-10" digital picture frame for the in-laws. Budget is around $100. There seem to be a few brands around but I am not sure which ones are decent. So any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. has anyone had any experience with the Kogan ones?

I am also looking for an e-reader with wifi for the wife. Any decent post xmas deals around?

Thanks

Digital photo frames make terrible gifts no matter how good or expensive they are. No offense meant if they actually wanted or needed it, but if you're looking for something good or practical to gift I would suggest something along the lines of a BluRay player, media player or game console.

Or if you want something that doubles as a digital picture frame, try an Android tablet or an LCD TV.

I have gifted a Kogan LCD photo frame once, the build quality isn't too shabby but I certainly won't be buying them again. They lose their novelty after a while.

  • +1, digital photo frames are highly likely to end up in landfill.

It's likely they don't want one and wont use it, only ever turning it on when you are at their place and with the photos they first loaded them up with.

  • thanks for the advice re the frame. The article is quite an interesting read on what is wanted and unwanted for Christmas.

My in-laws live overseas and I want to send them some photos of our baby boy. So I thought it's best to get a digital photo frame with some built-in memory so I can load the photos on for convenience. As muzzamo has pointed out, I think they perhaps will never load any more photos but I will fully load the frame with our photos anyway ;). So any suggestions?

I will check the kindle out. Can it read pdf files and the likes? does it have usb ports so that we can easily load it with e-books?

    Thanks

    • So any suggestions?

I would just get a tablet, load it up with photos and give it to them. After all, the photos will be stored on the SD card, and the tablet can also take pictures and store new ones.

Can it read pdf files and the likes?

It can read PDF files natively, but because of the small 6" screen you need to scroll left and right quite a bit. Text reflow only works on converted PDF files (not all PDF files will convert nicely)

So it's not the best device for PDF's — you might want to try a 7" tablet pc instead if PDF reading is high up your priority list.

Alternatively you can get the larger Kindle DX direct from Amazon.

      • Thanks for all the information mate. You convinced me on the tablet. So any suggestions on the tablet? any decent deals going around at the moment?

        Cheers
