Parallel Imports on AA Batteries

When you buy Duracell or Energizer type alkalines on special at supermarkets, they seem to have " Made in ….. ",in tiny letters.
How do you know if they're any good?

You expect massive multinational companies to have rigorous quality control systems in place regardless where the factory is located.

    • Have you tried Nescafe from one of the dodgy-bros shops?

      • Is it not the same?

Food is different because people in different Countries have different tastes so they cater to that even when it is the same food item.

I'm sure many of us here have tasted those 9-volt batteries before! 😂

        • Exactly this. Try a Tim Tam made somewhere in Southeast Asia like the Phillipines. Completely different taste. Different ingredients and sources of sweeteners and fats.

      • Blend 43 which is Australian or Original which can be from Thailand or Mexico?

You mean there are other AA batteries other than glitter Panasonic Eneloops?

  • Put them in a battery tester and see if they are good.

I don't think the Colesworth would source parallel imports from third parties specially when there is direct representation and/or authorised distributors for these multinational battery companies locally as this would guarantee generous discounting for bulk purchases. Duracell and Energizer would import the same battery from one of their many overseas factories and this would also vary from batch to batch depending on supply availability, price, etc., etc., and this is the reason for you to find batteries made in all sorts of places and this doesn't necessarily mean they are parallel imports.

But batteries you buy from Catch, eBay and other small online outlets are a different story altogether.

  • How do you know if they're any good?

Well they are alkaline batteries, so they are very much not good no matter who makes them.

Not all alkaline batteries are created equal. For example Choice conducted tests on numerous brands of AA batteries a few years ago and the life-span of different brands varied a lot.
Between the best and worst, the time to reach 1V at low drain was 49hr vs 43hr. The remaining capacity was 1718 mAH vs 1565 mAH

  • Most brands of batteries have at least a manufacture date on them along with an expected shelf life. Others have a best by date.

  • Ozb and their love of AA/AAA batteries.
