[Android, iOS] Free Extended Parking (At Selected Shopping Ctrs) with Westfield Plus Mobile App

148

Westfield is offering free extended parking for those who wish to sign up to Westfield Plus. You do have you download the app and enter your rego details, as well as enable location services. My guess is they are tracking your location while you shop Westfield "to improve their products and service offerings".

Enjoy.

  • I think is 4 hours.

  • -1

All Westfield's that have a cinema should be 3 hours, not 2 hours.

    • I think last time I had to go to a Westfield it was 3hrs free parking, or 4hrs with a movie ticket receipt.

    • +4

No. Parramatta has a cinema and free parking is 2 Hrs.

      • That's what i noticed the other day also and i found it weird, plus Parramatta Westfield isn't small. Takes you probably 45 minutes to find parking, order food and eat for example, if you need to get some shopping done also that isn't enough.

        • It used to be three hours but changed it to two once they introduced the Westfield Plus parking thing.

Bondi Junction also has a cinema and is only two hours without the app

          • +1

@kerfuffle: Bondi J gives you 3 hours if you validate your parking with the movie ticket even without the app.

  • So. You are the product? Does Facebook have shares in Scentre?

  • It varies by the shopping centre. In Canberra is only 1 extra hour free for a total of 3 hours. The ones I checked in Melbourne and Sydney give you 2 extra hours for a total of 4 hours for free.

    • +1

Majority of Westfields have no extended parking! Rather free parking hours have been reduced!

  • +3

This has been available for months now, it's hardly a bargain…

  • Its an extra 1 hour for normal free parking hours, e.g bondi junction normally 2 hours free plus 1 hour free from this app, other Westfiled (e.g eastgarden normally 3 hours plus 1 hour from the app) and so forth

    • As per linked page Eastfardens does not offer 'extended free parking'

    • I remember the good old days when eastgardens was free parking 🥲

  • +1

Parramatta Westfield is extra 2 hours (2+2=4 total). I just downloaded the app, put the number plates in then deleted the app :)

Also, 2 number plates max per account. So if you want to add your friends in if you are carpooling for example, you will delete others first.

    • Are you sure parramatta is 2 without app?

      • +1
      • +3

Parramatta used to be 3 hours free for everyone, but when Westfield Plus was introduced late last year, they reduced it to 2 hours free for non-members and 4 hours free for members

        • Just found that Chatswood did the same without app 2 hours.

          • @superforever: Chatswood was always two hours though until probably at least two years ago pre-app; it's why I always parked at Chase instead

  • +1

If I could ever get this app to work I would happily try and sign up again… good thing I dont need to mallrat for longer than an hour doing groceries

  • More a benefit for the merchants.

Shoppers staying longer is to benefit merchants, to keep them happy to stay as Westfield tenants in uncertain times

    • What is wrong with benefiting the merchant.. especially when times are tough for both consumer and vendors. Keeping the economy moving may not be such a bad idea… sorry if what I’ve said is a tad too complicated for ya, as not everyone understands basic economic.

      • -2

Nothing! That's what I was saying - it's a benefit for the merchants & Westfield. Seems clear to me.

Never said there was anything wrong with that!! You interpretated my comment as a criticism, which it wasn't!

But it's always best to understand who the Deal is meant to benefit.
It's not the customers in this case, but is presented as if it is!

As Deals on a bargain site would be assumed to be for the benefit of customers - was just pointing out who are the real beneficiaries.
(Creating sales through Deals usually benefits merchants, and can also benefit us)

My neg wasn't about any benefit to merchants, but my comment an hour later (check the time shown in Votes) - the removal of free parking time & giving it back by using Westfield's app. Pretty tricky spin!

So no real bargain / benefit for customers in this Deal!

It's just a PSA update on parking at Westfield. Probably should be in Forums.

sorry if what I’ve said is a tad too complicated for ya, as not everyone understands basic economic.

No need to be nasty & condescending. You were the one who jumped to a wrong conclusion & didn't understand!
With a few degrees, I have been an advisor to business. I do understand

You win. I clearly lack the ability to comprehend as you’ve pointed out. Whilst I may not have the gift of intellectual greatness, I can however lift heavy things.. who knows, might come in useful someday?

        • -1

I've never seen someone so defensive, to the point where they had to tell others about their degrees no one cares about or asked about…
          Calm down.

          • -2

@Ughhh: Another "virtuous" attack by the usual suspect… Ughhh
No wonder I hide your comments as Mods recommended.

The unnecessary & condescending accusation in response to my pretty basic comment was that I am an idiot who knows nothing about what I was commenting on!

Rather the person replying misinterpreted my comment & made a personal attack on my education & knowledge. That is the basis of my Business - with business people!

No one saw anything wrong with their condescending comment, except me. Just my response.

I know here no one cares. But I do. That's all that matters to me.

  • Few (11 out of 37) Westfield have Extended Parking! None near me.

This "extended" parking used to be free before this App!

Now we are trading use of their app with location, to regain our previous parking time taken away by Westfield!

Never found a use for this App.
    Will now uninstall in protest👎

  • I'll wait until they extend the offer to more centres first before downloading and joining. Hopefully they roll it out to more centres when they want more uptake because the current offer doesn't apply to any of the centres I actually go to.

  • Most unreliable app

    • Yeah; I was at Parramatta today, but it said my car wasn't at Parramatta? Happened last time as well. Not sure if it's just Parramatta that has the issue ..

      • +1

Yes, I've had that happen once to me and on exiting, the gate actually asked for me to make a payment even though I had not parked more than 4 hours.

Luckily I managed to get out without paying after I buzzed staff through the gate and explained I was a member and had previously recorded my rego details with my account.

I've also noticed that sometimes it takes quite a while for the app to show that you've parked. One time it took a good 30-45 minutes before my parking status actually reflected in the app.

  • I really miss the old trolley trick!

  • +5

You used to get four hours at Chermside until six months ago, when they rolled this out. Now you only get the four hours with the app. Not sure if a bargain.

    • +3

Expect that will happen at more Westfield.

Take away an existing "benefit", to get it back by installing their App, enabling location, etc.

That's the opposite of a bargain!

  • +10

They've reduced the free hours from 3 or 4 down to 2 to bully you into installing this app.

Downvote because of the tactics used to try and force people into executing Westfield's code on their personal mobile device… merely to get what you used to have without the tracking.

  • +2

The app is a PoS.. Doesn't even detect your car being parked in the shopping centre and even their own staff are sick of telling people it's broken.

  • +2

They're trying to bring in paid parking here with no investment and nothing but congestion.
They can stick their app in their pipe and smoke it….

  • +1

What's the bet they sell your location info 24/7?

  • +1

Since when is a change to parking at Westfield a Deal? A Forum post maybe.

Installing an app, providing your details & location, to get back what was previously free is not a Bargain & not a "Freebie" as listed.

Uninstalled the Westfield app I load months ago.

  • +2

Having forgotten where I parked my car, I found the local Westfield has cameras on each parking bay, linked to consoles at Valet - with number plate recognition. Was handy then.

Give them the number plate details (or even partial rego) & they can pull up a photo of the car & location in the car park. Was very quick to locate my car.

So linking your car number plate + GPS location on their App, with that parking system & all your personal information you provided over time (including app registration, newsletter subscription, competitions, etc) - Westfield can build up a useful (for them) data base of who you are, what times you shop at Westfield & how long for, etc.

    Expect highly targeted advertising!

And the app possibly could give location information within their centres, to identify what stores you visit. (Phone signal data has previously been used to analyse shopping patterns in centres, but without identifying users.)

The rego may be used to confirm your details further with State transport bodies.

That's valuable commercial information, that's not currently available at that depth of detail to shopping centre operators!

I'm not comfortable with that. Who will they sell / share that with? What will it be used for? A lot of possible unknowns.

And given we are being effectively coerced into use of the app to get back the free parking Westfield removed from us - it's a worrying development.

The Westfield app is very much designed to benefit Westfield, to increase their profits!

Uninstalled! Might take the bus instead of driving😉

  • Nothing at Burwood or Miranda…
    Come on, that’s a joke

    • Burwood doesn't even have ticketless parking, which is the bigger joke.

    • It's a change in parking conditions at some Westfields, where the length of free parking had been reduced.

  • +1

Not a Deal. At best a PSA.

Just another change in parking conditions at some Westfields - 11 listed in Description.

There used to be free parking at (my local) Westfields.

Then they said people were parking too long, so to make it fair - we're charging for parking - with a free period. We got used to that.

Recently the free parking time was reduced at some Westfields… (comments above)

But you can get the old free parking time back if you do what Westfield wants - register your details & rego on their app & turn location on!

What an offer! Westfield took some of the parking benefit we already had, & is now offering it back to us - with conditions!
    That's all this post is!

Retailers love collecting data on us! But is it worth it??

Consider shopping elsewhere. It's about the only thing shopping centres may cause Westfield to do something about this.

If successful, expect it to be rolled out at other Westfields.

    • This app is super annoying. I actually spend less time in Westfield and make do at other centres where I do my larger shopping. Good for some esp for the cinema but not for me.

I agree that parking benefit is a load of crap esp since the Westfield.

If your nearby Westfield isn't using it yet, count yourself lucky for now .

  • +1

Thanks for the PSA that Westfield has apparently reduced free parking to 2 hours from 3…

They're not getting my rego linked to any other identity, and certainly not my location and other phone data.

If the cinema doesn't still have the 4 hour parking attached, I guess I'll be going elsewhere.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if that perk is no longer available as I've been reading the free parking after 7 was removed unless you have the app.

I haven't been to a Westfield cinema location in ages and due to the parking hour constraints, I tend to go elsewhere anyways.

  • This is listed as a Freebie??

It's more like "Retail Extortion!"* 😵
… You love that free parking benefit don't you
… You wouldn't want anything to happen to it…
So do what we say, & your parking time doesn't get harmed!

*Of course businesses can lawfully change benefits & T&C at any time.
