Getting Paid on eBay Is Changing

The following are changing on ebay. This won't be encouraging me to use ebay anymore but it's an interesting change nonetheless.

I know everbody with an ebay account is probably receiving this information but interested to hear others views on the changes.

It’s now easier to get paid on eBay
Selling fees and expenses will be deducted before you get paid, and the remainder of your eBay earnings will go directly to your bank account, not your PayPal account.

That is good and how it should always have been. Getting stung with an invoice month later was never pleasant.

Also the divorce from PayPal was always going to cause a disconnect from the platform eventually. As long as it doesn't sit in an 'eBay Account Balance' but goes straight back to bank, that's fine. I never have money sitting in Paypal. Convenient but don't trust them with a dollar.

    • AGREE
so when we get an offer for example sell for $0 then once the item get sold, we know straight away if the offer works on that item or not

    • +1

I agree. One thing I wonder is whether eBay rolled out their own buyer and seller's insurance to replace PayPal's. Whenever I buy and sell through eBay I feel much safer because of this insurance. I actually had to claim once when I sold to a scammer who somehow tricked me into sending an item and then retracting their payment.

  • +1

One less layer to worry about.

Is this change current or in the future?

    • +2

Current. Changes applied to my account today.

  • +1

    nothing really new.
been known to sellers for a good part of the last 12months.

no different to selling on amazon, catch etc now as they have always managed payments.

    All running smooth so far.

  • I wont sell on ebay again, i sold a ps5 game for 60 bucks and took 3 weeks to get the funds.

    • That's a security feature for new sellers. It stops scammers from creating new accounts and running once they get the money.
If you upload tracking to eBay the funds are released the day after it is delivered. After a few transactions it comes instantly

      • +1

the ebay account is over 15 years old with a 100% feedback of over 500 score. I sell something about once a month or two, this is the first time it happened.

        • That is weird. Did you change PayPal account or something?

          • +1

@FireRunner: nup, the only thing that changed was my bank account inside paypal, the same long standing paypal account though! maybe that caused the review.

            • +1

@Topdog: vpn can also trigger this

              • @PensionerXXL: Thanks for heads up, a VPN is definitely something I have not used. (When on ebay) But who knows, I may have had it on, something to keep an eye on

  • This is bad - if someone scams you into getting a refund that they shouldn't be owed (swapping your item for their broken item etc), you don't have the choice to remove your PayPal details from ebay and riding out the debt until it is gone, then no longer selling on ebay (at least with that account).

  • Could not see the message.. where did you receive it?

    • It was an email. Gmail forced it into my promotions folder. Subject line was…

Getting paid on eBay has changed

  • +8

I see everyone missed that as part of the 'changes' ebay has ramped up the selling fees.

Yes no more 3rd party selling fees, but oh look, we increased ours! Lovely

I've been a small seller on ebay for decades, but this is just about it. I think I'll shift focus to facebook and gumtree. Ebay is just becoming too costly to sell on.

    • This does not surprise me at all

      • +4

        Its crap….

        https://sellercentre.ebay.com.au/c2c_payments-onboarding

then click fees, takes you to

        https://www.ebay.com.au/help/selling/fees-credits-invoices/s…

Its now 30c + 13.4% of the amount paid by the buyer up to $4,000 (including postage and handling), calculated per item.

So that includes postage (as it has been for a while), but if you sell say 10 items in one transaction @ $1 each. ebay will slug 30c per item + fees!

So You get $10 in 'sales', ebay takes $3 (30c x 10) + $1.34 (13.4% of the sale amount). So they walk away with $4.34! You get ~$5.66

        • Is this new seller fee higher or lower than the combined 'old ebay'+Paypal fees (which I roughly remember as being 10% and 3-4% respectively)?

          • +2

            @ddhar:

Is this new seller fee higher or lower than the combined 'old ebay'+Paypal fees

The new fee is about the same as the old 'ebay + paypal' fee. But the point is, ebay keeps claiming this as part of the move

No more PayPal payment processing fees.

Which is true, but they forget to say they jacked up their % fee as part of the move. Oh and now slipped in a per item fee of 30c on each item sold.

Also if someone buys something and does a pickup, pays cash, under the old fee model, I never paid paypal fees, just ebay fees (around 11%), but under the new fee model, I still pay 13.4% 'fees' even though ebay didn't handle any money. So I get ripped off even more.

As I said, long term small ebay seller, who will be selling elsewhere come March. I've become tired of ebays 'ways' and screwing the seller over.

Yet they wonder why the small seller is leaving to other platforms? Can't see any reason why!

            • @JimmyF: Duly noted.

I've long resigned to the fact eBay is never cheap to sell at. It's just the convenience of having a large buyer base.

              • +1

@ddhar: That large buyer base and convenience comes at a forever increasing cost to the seller.

Seller will be increasing prices to cover these changes.

With that 30c overhead and 13.4% fee, all those 'cheap' few dollar items just become unprofitable to sell.

              • @ddhar:

convenience of having a large buyer base

Unfortunately that base is often more expensive to deal with than Gumtree users when it comes to selling second hand gear that's too good to bin or recycle.

In my experience with eBay, way too many "buyers" screw you around, change their mind, do not pay at all, or are not willing to pay for advertised postage, etc. In these instances these complications cost you money and in some cases you end up in the negative for second hand gear that was "sold" at a very low price and the transaction fell through.

At least with Gumtree the process is simpler when it comes to completing a transaction. You make the buyer come to a location convenient to you, you hand over the item and walk away with cash. No shipping, no postage, no fees, no returns, no fuss.

        • +2

If you had to pay $10 ship them, your fees would be $8.68. You would get $10 plus $10 for postage so after paying Auspost you are left with $1.32. $1.32 after selling ten $1 items. Nuts.

          • +1

@Quantumcat: Yes its all about ebay screwing you over! But hey as ebay keep claiming. No more PayPal payment processing fees!!!

    • +1

I am surprised they did not state that they have increased fees due to customer feedback - that is usually how non desired features are presented.

"you spoke, and we listened, and as a result we are increasing our fees……."

      • yes, that's their style.

  • +1

I sell digital radios (Motorola APX and XTL/XTS) set up to scan the government radio networks and be UHF CB's and I'm through with ebay - I won't sell another thing on there. If enough people boycott them they might change - but I doubt it. Thankfully my reputation and word of mouth works well for me.

    • why? what happened?

  • Put your phone number in the ad so people can contact you directly.

    • +1

Don't they already have bots looking for phone numbers and then deleting them?

      • Not sure, never seems to happen on mine.

    • Put a photo of your business card in one of the shots. Robots are stupid.

      • Yeah but if caught, there is a chance your account will be canceled. Be careful, eBay would be aware of this

        • why would ur account be cancelled for putting a shot of ur business card in the pictures?

          • @Zachary: if its done before a sale it could be deemed as giving out information to do business outside of eBays T's and C's.

Go ahead and ask them if thats ok to do??

            • @TilacVIP: If you have a physical store outside of ebay, why wouldn't you advertise the fact that you can deal with them there and not on ebay? What about their information in the description?! Does that not count??

              • @Zachary: Read what iratepirate wrote:
"Put a photo of your business card in one of the shots. Robots are stupid"

                • most likely meaning, a way to avoid detection of passing on info that's against eBays terms. No reason to put up a "photo" of a business card otherwise.
                • @TilacVIP: Huh…interesting ebay doesn't like or want you to do business outside of their domain…………………. That's like putting up your items for sale at a swapmeet and then letting the buyer know that you also have an official business outside of this and this is just a side gig, only for the swapmeet organizers to turn around and say "Oi, we don't take too kindly to business transactions outside of our swapmeet."

      • ever heard of ocr?

  • I didn’t even realise PayPal and eBay split
Shows how much I live under a rock lol
Anyone know why did they split?

    • So they could sell Paypal services to other businesses etc?

  • The fees were getting ridiculous

  • anyone remember when the trading post use to have a monopoly of this sort of market? once the competition started the online selling platforms the trading post was pretty much dead.

    • +1

I used to love Thursdays and rush up to the newsagents to spend a whole day searching the paper.

    • The Trading Post has a very good site. And it is free to use.

The only problem is that people don't seem to use the site, and as a result, items do not sell.

Under the right management, they could provide a truly competitive alternative to Ebay.

For example, add a flat fee of $1.10 to each sale (like what Ebay used to offer), and bring people to the site with the promise they will not be gouged for sold items.

      • Being run by Telstra now

    • yes…but even Trading Post staff were bitches to deal with.

their record-keeping on who had paid for which sold item was ballsed-up, and I more than once had to pay twice because I had not retained the half-arsed rubber-stamped payment receipt.

Then there was the cute little habit they developed of re-writing your ad to what they thought it should be without notice or consultation…..in areas of goods of course of which they had not the slightest knowledge or understanding.
I DID hear an aside that some kind of nutbag born-again church denomination owned MTP…not sure if this was true, but would have explained some of their behavior, and the pushback you would get into with some staff on the phone. There was one woman in particular in there with a pommie-accent I remember…grrrr.

  • New? Cost

If you send a package to a buyer, at an Australian location, BUT, the buyer's originally registered to somewhere overseas, you still pay the 1.1% overseas charge.

    • So, eBay might charge you an additional "overseas" fee on any transaction.

    • @User508906,.. Is that 1.1% overseas fee on top of the normal 13.4% fee?, great if it was only 1.1% fee then better off selling your stuff overseas

    • Amount taken out of your payment includes the GST

  • +1

Just sold an item for about $620 including shipping and got slugged $95 in fees. Fk off ebay with your managed payments bullst.

    This is not an improvment.

    • Nope…it is a flat-out scam fees-grab…..same as jamming Paypal down our throats was years back..

  • So lets break this down

    Old fees:
    10.9% Ebay Fee
2.7% Paypal Fee (Only if PP was used as payment method)

    New Fees
13.4% Of final value (including any shipping fees you charge)
    +30c per transaction,

Essentially eBay have rolled PayPal fee into their new fees but its now unavoidable and its tantamount to highway robbery imho

I am done with eBay, many other options out there that a free or cheap.

    • Other new fees being they will add another 10% on top of your fees if you are in Australia if you are private.
possibly 1.1% extra charge if the buyer set up their account outside of Australia or saying they weren't from Australia.

      So New Fees can be
15.84% EBay Fee + 30c per transaction (or per item?)

  • PayPal was more convenient in that the funds were available instantaneously to spend.

This was a real problem for me over the long weekend when my bank account went into the red whilst I was away in Melbourne, but yet eBay was holding $2,500 of my money. I believe I only got Fridays Money on Tuesday, and Saturdays Money on Wednesday etc. Given that I had a tsunami of pending debits (about $7K worth), my account went into the red and my card declined when I was trying to book into a motel after 16 hours on the road. I had to borrow money for a motel, for food, for petrol to get home, and for buying more products. You could say ''Manage your money better" but I wouldn't have to if I had access to my money instantly!

Managed Payments is better in that it takes the fees out right away and leaves you with the net figure, hence you are never in debt to eBay. I like that about it.

Overall I am happy with it and in regards to the above comments, I read all the time that eBay fees are too high, or that buyers muck you around, or scam you. Whenever I read these things about scams and such I always think "What am I doing right that it seems nobody else is doing?". Scams never come into it for me (I've had a very few small petty ones in thousands of transactions). And getting mucked around, I can't remember the last time it happened. It just doesn't happen. Seriously.

And the fees are simply the old eBay + PayPal fees rolled into one. The gap between featured and anchor store fees has narrowed abit more, and the gap between basic and featured fees has widened abit more. These two things have basically worked in favour of making the featured store the more universally attractive option for a larger base of sellers.

    • While I agree in principle with your comment
The issue is PayPal fees were avoidable. I often had best offers which I would only accept if buyer paid bank dep or cash on pick up. Now the PayPal fee is rolled in and unavoidable.

The time taken to payout is another issue
PayPal can be overnight or even in seconds if you pay 1% while I am not a fan of PayPal and their ability to hold
Your money to ransom they are a much more effecient service.

One positive I will say, I sold something on eBay last Saturday. The customer collected and as they chose to collect they were given a QR code. When they arrived I scanned the code into my app and it marked the item as delivered. It’s certainly more security for the seller and avoids “I never picked it up so I want my money back” arguments etc.

      • Cause there was a scam were buyers reported item wasn't delivered even though they picked up item, why before this new QR code pickup system I made the buyer message me that his picked up item through eBay messaging as proof of pickup

  • I am a very casual seller on Ebay and I have just discovered that my ability to list items has been suspended until I set up managed payments. Given that they want my driver's licence number, I won't continue selling on Ebay. I don't trust them enough to include that level of information about myself on their platform.

    • nope…very fraught. Since they have also always come across as bumbling (profanity) anyway that tend to cock up everything they touch, and when/if something goes wrong, won't it be fun straightening it all out with those folks in Manila?…which…handily…would be one of the top picks globally to be the source of any monkey-business with identity-theft.

  • I'm not very happy about these changes.
Does anybody know if the Gumtree "list 2 free items on ebay" offer is going to stick around?
I'm a long time, small seller on ebay and if they take away this offer I will stop using the service.
    The fees are becoming ridiculous.

    • Yeah, but they told me they're not suppose to be running when I tried to claim my fee free listings after they sold and ebay charging me….

      • Terrible. I would dispute the charge.

        • I did and they said that it would be the last time. And then paypal shut me down and then I stopped selling on ebay…

  • Merged from eBay changes to the way they pay you

    Hi all
I sold something yesterday and eBay require me to update my details - provide bank details and my driver's licence in order to confirm my identity apparently. They only thing that wasn't too clear was how they now pay you - am I right that the money no longer goes via PayPal, and instead it goes to my nominated bank account (nab)? Any idea how long this takes and if it's safe to ship even though the money isn't only account?

Edit - just saw in my 'payments' screen it is shown as processing "the buyer has paid and eBay is processing it". Should I wait until I can payout before sending?

Side note - they buyer has no feedback and has only just signed up to eBay recently. Their address is legit and is in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Do I need to do anything to secure my money and make sure they don't send a "never received" note to eBay? It's a boxed item and was pretty expensive (about $1k). I regular mail with tracking and signature ok? Thanks

    • Sweet child… not a GPU I hope (see https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/636790)

    • Yeah this thing sux. They didn't pay me straight away and held the payment back as I changed some details after verification as I didn't want me real details in ebay. Once verified, never change any personal details.

    • So should I wait it out until I can get the money? Seems like they have paid, it's just eBay slowing it down.
Also, I was going to use auspost so shouldn't have the sendle issues. Apparently signature on delivery is no longer a thing…what will help me if the buyer was to claim they didn't receive it down the line?

      • +1

Once the order in your awaiting shipment you can ship, no need tow sit for the ebay payout to in your bank account.
Low value item you just use tracking. For high value item you will need to require signature. You may also consider insuring your parcel.

The low feedback buyer and expensive item is very concerning. You may cancel the order sd buyer requirement in your description until you see a buyer that met your requirement or just sell it on Gumtree or Facebook for cash only.

      • Sadly, there's nothing at all you can do if the buyers claims not to have received the item (or actually does not receive it). eBay will refund the buyer, and you won't have the item.

      • I always do signature on delivery. Their insurance doesn't cover the buyer scamming you, it's just if it goes missing on the way, I never pay for it. If the tracking number is provided and its marked delivered you should be in the clear. That's why its good to take lots of pictures, pack it well, and be able to call them out on their bs. I don't let buyers with zero feedback buy my items as per my settings, nor 'international buyers'

    • +3

When you provided the bank details, you were forced to provide the bank login and password to verify you. In the terms and conditions they are able to claw back (direct debit) the money from you in case the buyer dispute. Just not worth the risk selling on eBay for high price item anymore.

Buyer with no rating is high risk too.

Australia Post signature is pretty useless too in Covid time.

So you are basically putting your neck on the chopping board, not sure when the knife will be put down. Good Luck.

      • +2

        Provide bank login?!?!?! Wtf?!!?!?

        • Not exactly providing bank login as giving text of them, but rather when you click the bank details there is a pop up window to login directly to the bank then the bank will feed the bank details - similar on how you 'login google' to some sites. this way I guess it reduce mistakes.

        • yep….had to log in to my online bank site, with ebay hosting that pop-up…what could possibly go (profanity) wrong, right?

      • +1

you were forced to provide the bank login and password to verify you

What? I think you've been scammed, I didn't have to do that.

        • Please read my post above.

          • @jpl: Good info, stuff doing that.

        • I did…have done it twice now.

and online assistant referred to it, so I think it is usual under the new dodgy and irksome BS arrangements…

    • eBay will send a message to let you know when it's safe to post.

Check all your recent eBay messages / emails.

    • They pay you in 2 days. I haven't had any dramas except where once a buyer deliberately broke a graphics card fan to get a refund, ebay refused to pay for the fix despite the fact it was obviously scammy activity. Luckily buyer sent card back and it just had to fix the fan, and I resold it for a higher amount. Just lucky the buyer didn't send back a rock

    • +1

If you are worried, pay the insurance as well (at least you are covered if the buyer claimed the box was smashed during the process).

    • The way eBay has deliberately decided to favour buyers (despite their "seller protections") leads me to take the following steps:

      1) Do not sell to buyers with <10 feedback, or recent negative feedback
      2) Always record the process of packing the item, in full (i.e no edits), finishing with a tamper-proof sticker being put on the package with a unique identifier (some stickers have a space for a signature, some have individual numbers, some tear in certain ways when peeled etc).
      3) Send with insurance and signature on delivery.

Step 1 hopefully eliminate most scammers. Step 2 covers you for Item not as described (filming the item as you're packing it) as well as attempts to refund "without opening" as their switch out is obvious. And step 3 tries to cover for "item not received".

It's absurd that sellers need to go to these lengths to just receive their money, meanwhile, eBay still take their exorbitant cut from the proceeds.

      • +3

Step 2, they don't watch videos. They didn't watch mine when I got scammed and just refunded the buyer anyway.

        • that's the way they handle it-that's the way they roll.
But so it was with Paypal charge-backs.

you…you just get to try and reason with someone English as a 2nd language in a Manila boiler-room, fresh from an AMWAY or Scientology-style seminar training session.

      • Step 2 is done, but a seller can send a rock instead in a separate parcel with same identifications. Not fool proof

      • +1

The way eBay has deliberately decided to favour buyers

Since when haven't they? Did I miss the memo?

Im down 500 selling to USA during covid last yr (I sold over 500 items to many parts of world without issue… only in the USA), had full contact with buyer telling him things were delayed by up to 3mths and if he wanted to cancel before hand I was happy to. - Even the ads had a large banner explaining delays and a link to Aus Post's page saying there were delays etc
Sent buyer on the day of posting a copy of the shipping doc, sent him the tracking…

Buyer after few week said didnt show up, put in a dispute - So I sent ebay the proof of shipping, tracking etc - emails I'd sent buyer..

Buyer got the $500 back and got the item … intercourse Ebay.

        • they have been stupidly enabling buyer-fraud for years, as has Paypal itself that they are now divorced from.

Icing on the cake is that your buyer probably negged you as well..

        • @pharkurnell,.. Thanks for sharing that,.. certainly I'll think twice with selling anything overseas through eBay, wonder if one can set postage delivery times in the description/settings of eBay listing to 3 months or more to solve what has happened to you to cover any delays with shipping so also the buyer is warned to expect long delivery delays

    • +4

      Cancel the ebay transaction

Drive to the buyers house and collect the dough

      Saves australia post costs

      • yeah, not always a practical possibility…and ebay have also moved to obstruct more and more your communications with buyers.

      • eBay is always watching and get caught one still ends up paying the selling fees even if one cancels the eBay transaction

  • Usual smirking Simon Smith greed-grab excuse for more fees…justification:"money-laundering" — my arse. Same style of mumbo-jumbo process we went through when forced inclusion of Paypal as a payment option was forced on us years back, using the 'safety' excuse .Of course, back then, ebay was double/triple dipping us via Paypal. Now, they are double/triple dipping us via outrageously inserting themselves between us and our bank accounts.
the changeover has been a nightmare, also, up to about my 4th session with Filipino assistant windows..and one actual phone-call ex Philippines, trying to get paid for an item which would have been instant funds AND lower fees if using Paypal…OR if I had simply been allowed to arrange a bank transfer myself with the buyer.
Overnight, I got a message saying that the payment had now been made. Whoopee.
But no, instead…there is an unexplained/undefined —ebay debit— for $0.30c.
Probably the amount will come through next couple of days is my feeling, plus or minus my 30c…but it has put me in a position where I have posted item at $31 P&H cost without actually being in possession of the funds, even though I can see that buyer has paid willingly.
    My item was $41…the P&H was +$47.50.
Of course, I've been charged fees on P&H as well. Their usual obtuse BS rationale for that of course is that they like to encourage sellers offering 'free postage".There is no such thing as free postage , so why should I be an accomplice to that infantile pretense as well.
$88.50 total amount…$12+ total fees. Far too high.
they talk about safety and integrity, but they knowingly sponsor thousands of Chinese sellers who use fraudulent/misleading item titles/price-ladder devices, , making a nightmare of filtering search results price low-high on any item you are looking for.
they are thieves and con-artists and they can shove it, I'll be wrapping up my ebay selling when current batch of items expires. The items can go on Gumtree, even if they will all be fixed-priced. At least my fees will be confined to Paypal commissions and I will tear fewer clumps of hair out worrying about either ebay cock-ups or nutcases leaving neg feedback.

    • Feel your pain 👍and 13.4% is way to much 👎bloody rip-off 👎
