Saving The World, One Discount Code at a Time: Charitable Donations for Discount Codes

Dear Ozbargain Community

I have seen a proliferation of people offering to buy access to discount codes recently - especially when it comes to staff pricing on certain goods.

Obviously, these will be private transfers of money at the purchaser's risk, and there is a risk of fake accounts taking advantage of this situation.

I feel this could be turned around simply by exchanging donations to registered Australian charities for these codes (which generally cost staff members nothing). The code user helps a charity, and the code supplier has nothing to lose by facilitating the charitable transaction.

I propose that people link this post into any future 'Wanted: Codes' posts, and comment below with links to donation pages of various Australian registered charities. Perhaps we could convert this to a Wiki if enough people comment.

To set things off, one of my preferred charities is Bush Heritage Australia, link below:

Thanks for your time!

P.s. I can offer unidays codes, and would appreciate any of the 50% off s21 codes!

Don't see how this improves the situation, you just don't have visibility to see whether the buyer has paid. In fact it will encourage more people to not pay.

Perhaps posting a screenshot of the donation could assist, and having a bit of faith in humanity!

Yeah but then we're in the exact same position as we would be if were chasing payment ourselves, we have to trust a screenshot.

If we had faith in humanity there wouldn't be a need to do this in the first place.

I'm gonna let my inner cynic out - this sound like the sort of poorly thought out altruistic idea that dudes make up at parties to impress girls. Maybe that's not the case but that's the vibe I get when I read a lot of these 'change the world' ideas.

      • Each individual will have a certain amount of money that once they've donate that amount will feel like they've done their bit and cease donating, let's call this the charity wallet.

So the way I see this on a sort of behavioural/ethical level is that rather than risking money from your wallet of personal funds you're sacrificing money from your charity wallet instead as it won't really affect you if you don't get paid - you're still walking around with the warm glow as if you donated to charity yourself.

I simply wouldn't trust strangers on the internet to do anything, especially when it comes to money!

If I wanted to make a donation, I'd do it myself.

  • This is horribly inefficient.

If I want to chase a bargain my energies are focused on that.

When I want to donate I will do a nice amount once or twice a year where I can easily remember where to find the evidence for tax.
