Home Theatre: TV Vs. Projector: Which Big Screen?

Looking to setup home theatre in our 3.5x4.5m media room.

Went to one of the store in Sydney who quoted roughly $12k for
- Optoma UHD50X 4K UHD 240Hz Home Cinema Gaming Projector
- Marantz NR1711 7.2ch 8K Ultra HD AV receiver
- 120“ screen
- Paradigm (2 main speakers, 2 side speakers, a centre speaker, 2 Atmos speakers and a subwoofer)
- All require cables, bracket etc

Not sure if this is good deal or do we really need this expensive stuff for a decent home theatre.
So on other side, we are also thinking what if we just buy some kinda 4k resolution or something big 85 to 100“ TV. Which one? How much to expect?

Interested to hear some comments and feedback from you guys on these both approach.
Appreciate and thanks in advance.

I recently got a system installed for ~$8k, which consisted of
    - Epson TW9400 Projector
    - Yamaha speaker set
    - 120" screen
    - Yamaha RX-V6A receiver

I looked at going for a big TV, but after factoring in the other components (speaker setup, etc), it ended up being quite similar and the screen size still would've been smaller than the projector.

    RX-V6A has horrible reviews.

You need really dark environment to enjoy projector. one main reason OLED TV is considered the best is because it's ability to turn off individual pixel resulting in perfect black.

Also consider viewing distance vs screen size. 75" is good for watching mix of some free to air TV, some 1080p & mostly 4K media from 3m viewing distance. Just like in cinema, you don't want to sit too close to the screen.

If your focus is watching movies, you could get the following for under 6K:

    75" Samsung Q80T OLED
Pioneer FS52 5.1 pack by Andrew Jones
Pioneer Atmos speaker pair by Andrew Jones
    Sony STR DN1080
    Nvidia Shield TV pro

    • Unless money is no object, just get midrange stuff, dont spend such a huge amount of money.

Get something half the price, you wont be able to tell the difference unless you are watching them back to back, diminishing returns and all that.

Id takes Pig's advice that seems pretty solid.

Bought Epson projector for $1200 and Aldi sound system for $300.(haven't seen it at Aldi for a few years). Painted the wall in low sheen colour. Installed IKEA roller blackout blinds ($200) Connected everything myself (extra $100 for cables). Works fine for me, it's been at least 10 years with this setup.

You can setup a home theater for a quarter of the price if you're happy to settle on 1080p. If most of the 4k content you're watching is streamed it's crappy low bitrate quality anyway, not worth the huge jump in price (I would take high bitrate 1080p over low bitrate 4k). Also consider there's a ~30% markup on all electronics currently so you're going to be paying a premium for setting up a home theater during covid. I'd go the cheaper option, at least for now.

My setup is - HTPC > Epson EH-TW5600 > White Wall.

If I think of things on a pure enjoyment level I think this gets me 95% of the way there and so a 4k cinema does not justify the extra $8k+. If I wasn't in a rental I'd spend the $500 on a well rated flat pack screen.

1080p still looks good on a big screen and if the movie is worth sitting through you won't notice the resolution once you're watching it.

My understanding is that projectors have a continuous fan noise which is the only reason I need to stay away. I don't like or tolerate this kind of noise.

Therefore, TV and Soundbar is the best option for me. Recently bought Sony 75" and Samsung Soundbar, and couldn't be happier. My integrated TV room (not individual media room) is very dark with blinds down (blackout), and I sit 3m from TV. Even if I had a media room, I don't think I would change my audio and video set-up.

    • projectors have a continuous fan noise

They do, however a) it's not a bad as you may think and b) you tune it out

In my set up, the projector is fixed at the ceiling just above my sofa where we sit, I can't notice it even at quiet scenes.

      • My only experience with a projector in a media room was two years ago, at a friend's place. I found the noise extremely distracting/annoying, but I don't have much tolerance for noises in general. I have no idea what kind of projector he had at that stage, and if he ever tried to tune it, but I'd guess he doesn't know much about it. Maybe there are better (silent) projectors;

First check out the online calculators for the ideal size TV. Then go and look at LG CX OLED self illuminating TV's. If you are really lucky you may pickup an 85 inch 8K for miles less than the ticket price of $50,000, as I have seen it down to $18,000 and that was when they were just out. That was in Harvey Norman and do not forget, each Harvey is independent and they compete with each other. They were Way cheaper than JB..
Then put together your sound system.
    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks guys.
If we proceed with some TV instead of projector/screen, what kinda speaker/woofers we will need to add to get the room theater type of sound?
