How's Mooroolbark, VIC as a Place for First Home Buyer?

So the wife and I just bought our first home (owner occupier) on Daymar Drive in Mooroolbark VIC. Just wondering if there are any people around from Mooroolbark who could comment on what the suburb is like, in terms of liveability, crime, any future commercial developments (retail precincts, etc.), capital growth, the like.

I know I should've probably asked the question before buying, but what the heck, I'll still like to know.

Thanks all.

I would have thought you would have asked this prior to purchase.

Did you buy this property out of FOMO??

Agree with user above. This is what you research before you buy!

Then again thats probably why I don't have a house yet šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Congrats on the new house. Drove by there a few times. Looks like nice area. Easy drive to Yarra Ranges. I guess if you have kids, how good the schools are is quite important too. That's what i usually check first anyway.

      I'd probably avoid if there's drive-bys

  • We recently were looking in the same area (we live in Mitcham now)
we ended up buying in Kilsyth as spoke with a few people who had lived in Mooroolbark and the feedback was not good where as Kilsyth had a much better feedback

We did some research, spoke to some insurers (our car insurance was going to sky rocket if we bought)
the stats were about the same but we found the area lacked the amenities we wanted and as i said the feedback from friends was what put us off.

Mooroolbark is a high development area, lots of older places being replaced with high density development so you can expect a lot of construction around for a while (Kilsyth is the same but its coming to its inevitable end)

We also looked into Homly Ratings (these can be a bit biased however)

Congrats on buying your first home and welcome to the neighborhood :) (as we are technically neighbors now)

Mooroolbark is famous for its roundabout.

Relax. Giving your address out on OzBargain is much more dangerous.

I grew up there from the late 60s to the early 80s. All the houses were new and still being built when we moved there. Mostly working class English immigrants. I didn't realise till I left (@ 15) that everyone had low self esteem, poor self image etc. Lots of underage drinking, smoking, anti social stuff to amuse ourselves. We broke into coles through the roof when it was new :( and loaded up bags of unhealthy stuff from the shelves.

Life at school wasn't fun for anyone I knew.

  • Mooroolbark is a good area to get a foot in the door, probably like the Croydon of 10 years ago, should come good in time.
Currently looking for investment property in Croydon/Mooroolbark/Kilsyth/Boronia area for similar reasons, good value for money, minimal risk.
